What is -Art Style-? -Art Style- is a series of games developed by Skip Ltd. (with the one exception being -Art Style- Digidrive, which was developed by Q Games) and published by Nintendo for the Wiiware/DSiware download services. -Art Style- games combine "deep game play with atmospheric flair and simple, elegant controls that anyone can pick up and enjoy" (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=12992111&postcount=25619) . -Art Style- is also the successor to the BitGeneration series of games that was released at the tail-end of the GBA's lifespan in Japan; in fact, as of today, one-third of the -Art Style- games available are remakes of the BitGeneration titles. For more about the history of the -Art Style- series, check out the New Generations -- The History of -Art Style- section.

-Art Style™- CUBELLO (NA/EU) / -Art Style™- CUBELEO (JP) (Nintendo, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Art Style: CUBELLO mixes the strategy and feel of a traditional puzzle game with the precision and reflexes required in a shooter. As each stage begins, various colored cubes form into one large object called a Cubello, which floats and rotates as you play. Launch additional cubes from your magazine and try to connect four or more of the same color, removing them from the Cubello and eventually leaving only its core. Take on the challenge of either Stage or Endless mode and watch what happens when Bonus Time is activated. The straightforward controls and goal ensure that anyone can play, while offering enough depth that even advanced players will find themselves quickly addicted to the unique world of Art Style: CUBELLO (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=13200293&postcount=25921).

-Art Style™- ROTOHEX (NA/EU) / -Art Style™- DIALHEX (JP) (Nintendo, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Use colored triangular panels to create a vibrant mosaic of stained glass in Art Style: ROTOHEX. As triangles fall from the top of the screen, rotate them to group six panels of the same color and create a matching hexagon, or HEX. Once the HEX has been formed, it will disappear, allowing the existing panels to shift and more panels to fill the playing field. A clear-cut goal and two different styles of intuitive controls allow you to focus solely on the game play-which is vital, as the playing field will be full of panels before you know it. With multiple modes (unlock more as you progress further in SOLO mode), special item panels at your disposal, and the ability to play cooperatively or competitively with a friend, there will always be another HEX to create (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=13383284&postcount=26243).

Help a scuba diver reach the ocean's floor by matching three or more colored blocks horizontally or vertically. The more blocks you match, the faster the diver will descend. Fail to clear blocks and the diver's air supply will start to run out, causing darkness to creep in from above and cloud your vision. Add in the ability to pick up bits and place them anywhere on the touch screen, and you'll quickly find that strategy is critical to your success. By clearing the bits, you gradually reveal each stage's hidden game character - look for favorites from classic NES™ titles - and earn coins that can be spent to unlock DARK stages or to listen to the game's soundtrack in MUSIC mode. R&D mode teaches you new patterns and challenges you to complete various ranks, while FACTORY mode gives you the chance to earn money by making as many boxes as possible from an endless sheet of paper. Success in each mode brings its own reward: Clear ranks to earn a promotion, change your character's appearance, and use your earnings to acquire new items for your character's miniature garden. Your goal is simple: create combinations equaling 10 by sliding numbers around the playing field. Move them horizontally or vertically, but be careful not to create an unusable non-number in the process. Choose from one of three modes: eliminate a set amount of numbers as quickly as possible in ZEROSUM MODE; get rid of prearranged groups of numbers in as few moves as possible in PUZZLE MODE; or continue removing numbers until your game is over in INFINITE MODE. In addition, you can challenge an opponent to a two-player wireless battle in VS MODE and see whose number-crunching skills reign supreme. Push, pull or shove cubes to make your climb easier. Try to gain extra points by stepping on five cubes in a row on the same floor. In addition, you'll encounter special cubes that can either be helpful or harmful to your effort. This constantly moving puzzle game combines an easily understood playing field (an intersection) and a simple goal (create fuel), challenging you to properly guide a never-ending stream of cars. Stack similar cars five deep to create some fuel, then use that fuel to continue your progress in the game. Play in ENDLESS mode to see how long you can last, or compete against the computer or a human opponent in VS mode. -Art Style™- light trax (NA/EU) / -Art Style™- Lightstream (JP) (Nintendo, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Art Style: light trax takes racing to whole new (and very surreal) levels as you control a white beam of light moving perpetually forward while your viewpoint shifts between 2-D and 3-D perspectives. Start by choosing one of the two main modes of game play, each with its own distinct goal. In light tours mode, you vie with other light beams for the most points in a three-course racing tour. Watch out for obstacles, use items and strategically use your dash ability to finish first. In freeway mode, your objective is to set a high score by traveling the greatest distance within a set amount of time. Mastering the intricacies of each setting is crucial: you'll have to alternate between them in order to progress through the game and unlock all of its modes. With precise controls packed in and a driving techno soundtrack, Art Style: light trax offers an experience unlike any other. Are you ready to compete in a mind-bending race at the speed of light? -Art Style™- ROTOZOA (NA) / -Art Style™- PENTA TENTACLES (EU) (Nintendo, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Control a circular creature-like organism known as a rotozoan and nimbly make your way through level after level of primordial ooze. Comprised of only three distinct parts (colored sides, tentacles and life force), the focus of your rotozoan life is simple: grow your tentacles. After playing a few levels and learning the basics of your microscopic world, you begin to unlock additional modes of play and the ability to choose the number of tentacles on your rotozoan. Each mode has its own specific purpose: reach a particular length with your tentacles or grow them to the greatest length possible. In either mode, growing your tentacles means absorbing enemies known as goobugs by touching them. There's just one catch: Successfully absorbing a goobug depends on matching its color to your tentacle. Also, longer tentacles can more easily come in contact with incorrectly colored goobugs (causing damage to the tentacle and decreasing your life force), and the goobugs themselves multiply and begin adapting to your movement. Luckily, objects such as the restorative heart item and special attack-enabling cyclone item can be found floating in the ooze to help your rotozoan survive. With atmospheres ranging from peaceful to intensely challenging, Art Style: Rotozoa offers a wide variety of levels. Victory can only be achieved through quick, precise movement and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Are you ready to take on the goobugs? Developer Q&A: http://ms2.nintendo-europe.com/artstyle/enGB/index.html

Why aren't Q-Games' other DSiware titles, such as Trajectile, Startship Defense, and X-Scape, considered part of the -Art Style- series?
From jotstick.com`s interview with Kazuyuki Gofuku of Nintendo: "The Art Style games focus on a fusion of visual and sound. So, from a development perspective, Art Style games start with the visual and sound in mind. On the other hand, Q-Games really focus on the game system. So it wouldn't necessarily be appropriate to go out of the way to force a visual or a sound element onto the particular game system that they have in mind" (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/26/interview-q-games-and-nintendo-on-x-scape/).

Amazing work, OP, and on a topic that certainly deserves this sort of treatment. Art Style is pure <3 in gaming form. A whole lot of my favorite games this gen have that label.

I have some of the original Art Style games for the GBA (dotsream, Digidrive, Orbital and Dialhex). I loved the small, square boxes they came in. They really were stylish. :lol

Amazing series and great OP!

Boxlife, Cubello, and to a slightly lesser extent Aquia, PiCTOBiTS, Orbient, and Precipice are not only my favorite Art Style games but among my favorite games on the whole platform.

Can't wait for Rotozoa. I played dotstream back in the day and should really get Light Trax too.

love cubello, simple yet slick looking aesthetics combined with a strong puzzle idea; it's really a great little downloadable game, but that's the only one i have so far.

I own all available in Europe and I love them. Such a great series. Only BASE-10/Code sucks cause there is no lefty option :(

your lack of love for base10 is not unnoticed. repent now.
or i'll send picross3d to take over your life

art style is darn close to the quintessence of gaming for me these days. i've sunk at least a few hours into each of those, easily many times more into some. the value of the games in the series is really hard to beat.

The Art Style series is the best series available this generation. The titles are so ridiculously addictive and fun. They are also one of the few that my wife loves as much as I do. And that is one helluva OP, mockingbird.

Great thread! I only own PiCTOBiTS, but what an amazing game. It's full of NES nostalgia in both the visual and sound department.

YMCK (the chiptuners behind the music) have done an incredible job on remixing classic NES tunes. Excitebike, Mario, Zelda, Ice Climbers, Balloo Fight, Wrecking Crew to name some of them.

Click here to listen to one of the best NES music remixes I've ever heard.

I have three or four of their albums. Just amazing shit. While I was in Japan, my British roommate turned me onto them. I used to have every track they've publicly released on my iPod - but the damn thing broke down on me and I lost them. I should really see about filling out my collection of their tracks again.

Excellent thread. Rotohex is my favorite in the series; short of Tetris, no other puzzle game in history is built upon a more brilliantly-realized concept.

THIS. I coudln't believe it had no lefty option, even Ouendan, a game that barely needs it, has one.

Aside from that, and digi-drive and precipice, the low points for me in the series, the art style games are pure, unaltered gaming bliss. A box life could very possibly be my favorite game this generation.

Thanks for the compliments guys, but I messed up!! I forgot to make a second/third post should any new games be announced. I maxed out the charater count in my first post. I don't suppose a mod can help me?

great thread. I proudly own all of the Art Style games, including the bit generation's :p

the only game I don't quite enjoy is the Zengage. most other games are addictive, at least until you beat it

<3 OP.

However, I Strongly recommend also recommend merging the bit.Generation games into here, as a) the precursor, and b) basically the rebranded version.

Great job, Mockingbird! These are some of my favorite games this generation; I own them all! Really wish Nintendo did more to promote that these titles exist, they deserve a ton more traction than they get. Anyone ever get an inkling of sales figures?

Love those games !
They have an Indie game feel that is awesome to see in something with a big name like Nintendo behind it!

Loved the gba games and i'm loving the wiiware ones !
...just don't have a dsi to try the dsi ones ... =(

Also ... i love how, with the guys behind pixel junk in it, the one wich most resemble a playable version of flOw is by the other dudes xD

Oh man. I've never even heard of any of these, but they make me want a DSi badly.

I love that there are developers that like to make simple and entertaining games without being "hey this is a blatant Wii BetterGameThanThis ripoff." Flashy graphics and headshots are great and all, but these games just look like warm baths to lay in.

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I don't have a DSi but I'm gonna have to look into some of the Art Style games I missed. Bought Cubello on a whim one day near its release, and really enjoyed it. Plus I'm a big SKIP fan.

Great thread, OP. Excellent job!

About the only one I havent bought yet is Zengage; it just doesnt look that....inviting to me.

I would gift any of the wiiware games to someone, just to spread the love that is ArtStyle.

Cubello is definitely one of my favorite Wii games & makes great use of the remote - one of those games that really wouldn't have had the same kind of feeling with a standard joystick. Some of the later levels, where if you screw up in the first 2-5 seconds, the game will end were maybe a bit much (still haven't got to the really late levels). Besides the very clean, great visuals, I just love the sound design in this game.

Will get Light Trax soon.

Art Style is my one of my favourite series and concepts to come out this gen.
Currently playing Penta Tentacle (Rotazoa sounds better tho) and it's really cool. Orbient is seriously one of my favourite games this gen, simply incredible.

What really sets this games apart is the incredible music and sound... That coupled with the style and simple but great and tough gameplay has really made them shine to me. I'm tempted to buy a DSi/XL just for the DSiWare games.

Art Style is my one of my favourite series and concepts to come out this gen.
Currently playing Penta Tentacle (Rotozoa sounds better tho) and it's really cool. Orbient is seriously one of my favourite games this gen, simply incredible.

It's one of strange cases in which US users get a better name =P

<3 OP.

However, I Strongly recommend also recommend merging the bit.Generation games into here, as a) the precursor, and b) basically the rebranded version.

I would love to but I'm basically at the character max in the OP. Can a mod like give me post #2 or something? There's more info I'd like to add, not to mention I need room for future games.

I just completely cleared all 36 levels in Cubello two days ago! Currently I'm playing light trax right now. It is so awesome.

I hope they bring out a version of Soundvoyager, the best of the original Bit Generations games, IMO.

The games were all very simple (avoiding oncoming traffic on a highway; chasing a chicken-thing; searching for the bits and pieces of a song). What made them amazing was that as you played them, the screen would slowly fade out, you closed your eyes, and you played entirely by listening. I've never played anything like it.

I'd really love to see what they could do with it on the DSi, and its massively-improved sound over the GBA.

I own only Orbient.
Genius game but it was one of the greatest "fuck this shit" moment for me around the 30 level.

I just got light trax. OMG sooo good, feels like f-zero mixed with audiosurf. Best results screen music ever :D

Definitely one of the best in the series (but why no multiplayer!?), right up there with PicoPict, Cubello and Orbient!
