Awesome gaming soundtracks that NO ONE'S heard of.

Both the original tracks and the redone soundtrack are awesome.

Terranigma.
It's really quite amazing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8KMZQEoi28

I would kill for an orchestrated version.

I wouldn't call Terranigma obscure. It's one of those legendary games whispered among the 16-bit greats. Hell, I know I guy who loves this game, and even my Uncharted Waters Fanboyism cannot deny the pure awesomeness of Terranigma's soundtrack. Easily my top 3 soundtracks.

Not unheard of, but not mainstream. My favorite soundtrack on the PS2.

The soundtrack of the Touhou games is fucking awesome. Seriously. I'll just post some of my favorite tracks, but there's like a hundred between all the games (and the tasogare games have really awesome remixes too).

I agree with this.

One of my favourite Touhou tracks: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=hT2nfmx4d9w

Phantasy Star Online also has an awesome soundtrack.

to the OP,

JP2 --- great fucking call. mad props for bringing that bad bear up.
what a great, great game with amazing music.

I wouldn't call it a great great game, but it does have the foundation of a good game, but just maddeningly cheap difficulty. My friend said he could barely beat the game in the hardest mode WHILE CHEATING WITH GAME GENIE AND SAVESTATES.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts soundtrack

Oh wait, we're talking about gaming soundtrack that no one's HEARD of.

I though it was games no one has played.

I'd have to say Killer 7 and No More Heroes OSTs, everybody has heard of those two games, but only a handful of people have actually played through the games and heard all the awesome music in them.

I presume that this is meant to mean "obscure" games, or at least games that aren't big franchises, and so I point to the Mother series. I guess they sell pretty decently in Japan, but in America it is bust.

Mother 2 and 3 have amazing soundtracks, both extremely ahead of its time for the medium.

THE. BEST. SOUNDTRACK. IN. SEGA. GENESIS!
Jesper Kyd FTMFW! I can't stop emphasizing on the awesomeness of this soundtrack. Ranger X is the only GAFFER who has heard this (Pretty obvious considering his username is the best game in Sega Genesis. EX RANZA!!!!!)

batmanRobin.jpg

Fuck yes. I loved that game. Also, all of Jesper Kyd's work in the Hitman games is criminally underrated. A lot of really good orchestral stuff along with some really well done electronic music. The meat packing plant in Contracts and the Tosca aftermath in Blood Money come to mind.

Socket: Time Dominator and Battle Mania Daiginjou (both on Mega Drive by Vic Tokai) have amazing soundtracks. Can't find very good examples on youtube though.

Yes yes, to Amir0x you listen!

I don't know about any of you, but here are some soundtracks that aren't mentioned often that I like for various reasons.

Blast Corps.
I'm sure the game is new to none of us here, but no one talks about the soundtrack.
No matter what tangents the soundtrack (or the game) went on, it all seemed to work.

Ragnarok Battle Offline
You either beat this game long ago, or have no idea it exists. Soundtrack is ridiculous.

Nice one. I have the soundtrack also. Another good soundtrack thats sure to get some Jaguar lovin'....Defender 2000. Bought the game off Ebay a few months back, its a good one. For anyone watching...try to watch around the 2:33 mark, this is why so many Jaguar owners swear by some of the games in the system's library. Its not just Defender now,its really enhanced with new powerups and brings a new twist to its oldschool gameplay.
Jeff Minter created this game also, probably had a hand in the soundtrack too, sounds allot like Tempest 2K

Other favorite soundtracks of mine...

Powerlave

SoulStar

The soundtrack for Brain Lord for the SNES by Masanao Akahori, also notable for his work on Cybernator for the SNES (also a great soundtrack) is fantastic and has a really 16-bit vibe, especially the ending theme.

Listen to the following and tell me that most of these tracks don't completely kick ass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5y9cb8PPD4
This game also featured a town named, "Toronto" which I always found funny.

Its got a big-name character in it, but not many people have played it. Wario's Woods on NES has a kickass soundtrack.

FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES REPRESENTATION AHOY!
Crystal Chronicles's soundtrack was absolutely amazing. I adore this game, for both its refreshing soundtrack as well as all the great memories I've gotten from this game.

Oh my God please save me. My wife has put probably hundreds of hours into that game, beaten it many times over. That little tune haunts me. I'll be whistling it all night now. While crying.

Ghosts 'n' Goblins games always have great music. Not really an unheard of series, but in particular check out relatively unknown soundtrack in the Atari ST version, which was made up of mostly original compositions by Tim Follin as opposed to the original arcade soundtrack.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9WponmKi8A <--- amusingly the first video I found was quite blatantly taken from a pirated copy of the game... 5 minutes of one of the best compositions ever heard on home computer.

Nobody's mentioned Journey to Silius yet? I haven't even played the game, but it's got some of the best 8-bit tunes out there.

Stage 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjG2ZjPqzzE
Stage 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7BRgcBXAKE&fmt=
Stage 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KovP1Y-kBtg&fmt=

Sweet stuff.

Also, I know you said no big name games, but I have to mention Mega Man 6. Despite the series being known for its great music, people really only ever talking about 2, 3, and some of the X games. Nobody ever talks about MM6, but I think it has some really sweet tracks.

Tomahawk Man - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uoht_KRBTz4&fmt=
Flame Man - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdWeTin2mho&fmt=
Blizzard Man - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-TqJl1rfAg&fmt=
Yamato Man - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3c67kv0saI&fmt=

Really, all of it's awesome.

Soma Bringer.

That's all I can find. Soma Bringer is definitely the best work Mitsuda has done since Xenogears.

You can definitely tell it's classical Mitsuda. The first track sounds almost a little too similar to one from Chrono Cross though (I'm thinking it was.... Forest of Dancing Shadow, or was it Garden of Gods?).

That being said, I'd buy this game just for the music.

As for my own contribution, I'm going with Breath of Fire 3. Is that obscure enough?
