I have a baby boy due in two months and me and my better half have been going through a whole bunch of names. I've been very adamant about naming him Geralt as an homage to the Witcher series and CD Projekt Red but the gf is not convinced. She thinks that people will think it's a weird name and might alienate him from others growing up. Personally I think it's very close to a normal name and people will just think it's a variation of Gerald. So what do you guys think? Should I listen to her? Is she overreacting? Thanks!

Kale Breckin.

There is your compromise name.

Don't give your kid game gimmick names that won't be cool 10 years from now.

I think given our generation, Geralt should be fine. Would either of you happen to be Polish? It is a name in Polish folklore.

Why not just call him Gerald then? Close enough to Geralt without the association to the character.

I think Roach would be a good name if you want to do a Witcher themed name. Not many people will know it's from a game.

The last thing Geralt would want is having his name confused with Gerald.

The kid will be named Geralt and then he'll grow up and play Witcher 3 and be like "Dad, why do you like this game? It has shitty combat and controls and feels awful to play."

Don't name your kid after any game. Give him a normal top 100 newborn names one and you'll spare him a lot of pain from his peers once he gets a bit older.

She's absolutely right op. Don't give your kid a shitty name for your own entertainment, because he'll have to live with that name for a lifetime of other people looking down on him for it.

call him red

She is right, try Gerald, just think it's a variation of Geralt, semi homage

If you're in the U.S. then yeah that's a weird name. Can't speak for anywhere else though. Usually it's better to go along with the better half.

I think even Gerald would be a poor fate for a kid born this century, a similar name with added nerd baggage is doing him no favors.

At best you're really ending up naming your kid Jerry in the end.
