People were nuts to expect Larian to regress to pre-rendered/2D when they do real time top down 3D so damn well (and arguably just as good, if not better than many of the games that actually did go pre-rendered in recent times but somehow didn't look as good as the classics or OS). This looks great, hopefully the combat rules are better than the Infinity Engine games, closer to something like Temple of Elemental Evil, turn based is a good step to that (though I love real time with pause when done well, D&D just doesn't work for it and people would complain over necessary deep twists).

A true successor to Baldur's Gate II was never going to happen. No one can make that kind of game today. The Pillars of Eternity games showed that certainly Obsidian is not up to the task (maybe if they had a bigger budget).

This was always going to be a Larian game with the D&D license in the name of Baldur's Gate and for me at least, I'm perfectly fine with that since they've made the best CRPG in recent years with Divinity Original Sin 2. I just hope they're able to go a bit bigger in scale with this game.

Even the assets are the very same from D:OS2.
This looks more like a mod than a whole different game.

Nice strawman. NO ONE was expecting that. We were just expecting Divinity 3 to be called Divinity 3, not Baldur's Gate 3.

Oh, and this comes from someone who absolutely loves Divinity games.

I don't know what people expected.

Of course this is what it was going to be and look like. This is Larian's engine and this is what they excel at.

I think it looks great.
Have to somehow bash great games I guess, before the reveal people were spreading fud it was gonna be some third person arpg, now that it proves to be an old school CRPG just like the rest of their games it's still not good enough, lol.

Since this is basically Divinity 3 I wonder if it will have controller support.......my guess would be yes.
It's Baldur's Gate 3 and it would most certainly get controller support at some point regardless given all the CRPGs in recent times that bothered to support such schemes well and even get console ports did very well for themselves.

It looks better than Pillars and any other recent pre-rendered thing so, yay I guess. It makes zero sense to limit yourself to camera angle and pre-rendering resolution when real time 3D is so good these days and Larian are masters of it for CRPGs. The only reason to go pre-rendered is to not bother doing all that goodness in real time and having to have an engine and art department and budget fit for that. Same reason Cyan, Capcom, and everybody is doing real time 3D these days. You're basically complaining Larian succeeded and get to go all-in with high budget CRPGs. Crazy.

I loved the Divinity games, and I'll probably love this game as well.

But this is pretty much Divinity 3 with a Baldurs Gate skin. Everything looks and feels like Divinity 3

Edit: The game is way too fucking colorful lol.

Also the setting and ruleset have 0 to do with Divinity, it's pure D&D forgoten realms so it's dumb to call it Divinity 3 (which isn't even correct) just based on a good thing, ie the wonderful technical and artistic quality level of the game. I'm sure we'll get an actual Original Sin 3 or new Divinity too.

I know.....I was just trying to rile ppl up especially with the controller comment.

Personally, I am fine with how it looks as long as the story and gameplay are solid. I admit though I would "prefer" it to look more like Pillars of Eternity or Torment Tides of Numenera but I am not counting it out because of that.

I'm torn. I have a strong preference for turn based so I'm happy in this regard. The graphics and music are very good also.

But the UI, level design, atmosphere is Original Sin. It can be a great game, the first Original Sin is one of my favorite RPGs ever, but this is very different from Baldur's Gate.

PS.: They get bonus points from me for playing the game as it is, without any cheats or anything. Swen is such a cool dude.

your mind
The graphics are nice, but after very recently playing through BG & BGII back to back, I am not getting the Baldur’s Gate vibe from this. Something about the environments and especially the music.

I am sure, unless something goes terribly wrong, that I will buy it anyway. I’m just not getting that feeling.

People saying “well, what did you expect?!!” in this thread...

um...

...Baldur’s Gate III

🤷‍♂️

D:OS3 indeed.

Magic hand aside, I don't see a lot of elements that remind me D&D5.

I'm pretty happy to see that Larian used the Nautiloids ships from Spelljammer, thought.

Yup, this looks like DOS2 with D&D ruleset. Which is likely a great game no doubt, but it's not really what I'd really like from BGIII. What exactly makes this the third game in that series? The setting only? It feels like it's missing the DNA of BG games.

I kinda wish they'd push further away from DOS in terms of visuals, it just looks way too similar generic high fantasy. Personally for me BG is a bit more grim and less cartoony. Maybe that's partly a budget issue. The cinematic looked great though.

Turn based vs. RTwP is another matter I'm sort of torn on. I think a BG game should be RTwP, and optimally I'd prefer a system like DA:O had with maybe some enhancements and more freedom, but I really don't know how that could be done with modern D&D, I haven't played the newer rulesets. Turn based can still be great though, I thoroughly enjoy XCOM type gameplay and tactics. And as far as BGI & II combat encounters go they were pretty awful. Designing a good RTwP system is really kinda difficult thing to pull off. The later Dragon Age games went way too far in the direction of Mass Effect and mostly controlling your dude with a controller vs. full party tactics. TBH, I didn't really expect Wizards to allow deviating that much from their ruleset so turn based makes a lot of sense. Overall, what we saw makes sense and is exactly what you'd expect a Larian developed D&D game to be. It just doesn't feel or look like BG III in any shape or form beyond the lore.

Fine with me not being a direct sequel/successor/whatever to BG2 and they're doing their own thing which is divinity original sin 3. As much as I love crpgs when I was younger I wasn't a fan and as such did not play BG1 or 2 and never truly bothered to even after playing most modern ones and liking them.

3D and turn-based is disappointing, but not unexpected, will still be there day one. I know jack shit about 5th ed rules, last I played was 2nd ed in high school.

People complaining about turned based, please take your L and leave.

Praise be to Cthulu for turn based gameplay.
Hell yea. RtwP was always just a fad/mistake trying to cash in on the popularity of the RTS genre at the time.

I remember being PISSED back then that the Infinity era D&D games weren't turn based like the glorious AD&D Gold Box games were. I did still enjoy them, but they would have been much better/authentic if they were tb. (with adjusted encounters, of course)

Yea, stuff like the UI, asthetics, writing does look too 'Divinity-ish', but expecting it to hit all the right notes is just not being realistic. At least it's isometric & turn based and not some real time/3rd person awesome action travesty.

And like I said in another thread, if this disappoints...there's also Realms Beyond, Knights of the Chalice 2 and Solasta: Crown of the Magister on the horizon for cRPG/D&D fans.

I am convinced that people who prefer turn based over RtwP have anxiety issues.

I cannot wait for this man to wake up and watch the reveal. His responses are going to be glorious. He was so convinced, so absolutely sure.

Watching him break down is going to be amazing.
No buy from me at full price, no chance.
Baldur's Flop 3 confirmed.
This game should not be called Baldur's Gate at all.
People are fuming at this decision. And it will 100% effect sales.
