Can't find a better written English source for this, but it's fucking awful none the less.

BANGKOK — More than 80 foreigners were detained during a combined military and police raid in Bangkok’s red light district Thursday night.

The operation in Soi Nana 4 – which was not backed by a court warrant – was specifically targeting “black people,” according to the commander of the raid. Seventeen people ended up being charged with visa violations.

“We have received complaints from both residents and foreign tourists that there was prostitution and black people plotting criminal acts in the area,” Surachet Hakpan, head of the 191 emergency response unit, said by phone Friday. “They caused a nuisance to people in the area.”

A force of about 100 military and police officers raided the district at about 2am. More than 80 people were detained then given drug tests. One person tested positive for narcotics use, police said.

Seventeen people also lacked relevant travel documents or had overstayed their visa, Maj. Gen. Surachet said. They were subsequently charged with visa violations and sent to an immigration detention center, pending deportation.

When inquired about the suspects’ nationalities, Surachet described them as “Africans,” though he later added that most were Ugandan nationals.

“The operation was meant to build confidence and a sense of security for people and tourists in the area,” the major general said. “When tourists walk around the area, these people nag them, to buy goods, or to solicit prostitution.”

He added that officers did not obtain any court warrant for the raid, since it was led by soldiers who acted on a special order granted by the junta, which allows them to detain individuals and search properties without a warrant.

Just another shitty day under the Junta.
Arresting and humiliating women who've probably been trafficked and are forced to sell their bodies thousands of miles away from their homes....and with no warrant.

Off the visit list.

Man, and I always recommend Thailand to people who want to visit Asia, but fuck that. Not anymore. And I won't be giving them a single one of my tourist dollars again.

I have it on good authority (from people on the gaming side) that racism is different and/or nonexistent in Asian countries.

USA exporting the core values again

Yeah, we invented racism. Darker skin people all over the world were all fine until George Washington came along.

I hate that thread, because it's a success story.

But the thread is just bitching about the minority that don't accept him. Which is fine, but i think we'd get more mileage by actually celebrating the victory?
It's a minority that don't support him? Didn't most agents turn him down? Many people refuse to work with him?

Nope, a lot of racism/prejudice against darker skin in Asia stemmed from social status - darker skin meant you were probably working longer hours out in the sun and thus poorer, compared to the light skinned people who were richer and stayed indoors. People in Asia generally prefer to have lighter skin (they will refuse to go out and tan) because its a beauty standard.

I fully support the movement to ignore every stupid thing Slayven says. It'll be a titanic effort, but we shall persist.

But they haven't done anything against prostitutes from other countries, or even child prostitution? Heard there are a lot of forced prostitutes from former Soviet countries, who have their passports taken away.

The flaw with the ignore list is that it doesn't help rescue discussion from inane posts that get quoted repeatedly.

Countries and cultures all over the world have had prejudices against dark skin and preferences for light skin for ages. A myopic view of the problem will not lead to an actual solution for the problem.

Also, you sell the evil people do short by immediately blaming someone else.

Are people actually shocked by this? Any society that hasn't been through civil rights stage will have a basic level of racism.

People seem to ignore human history. There will always be a privileged class and a class that gets shit on. Whether it is skin color or ethnic differences, religion, culture, hell even language. Take India for example. There will always be Hindu privilege while minority muslims will be treated worse. In Rwanda what made the Hutu so different from the Tutsi? What is the difference between Shiites and Sunni Muslims?

Discrimination against dark skin occurred for millenia before the US even existed. Wealthy elites who didn't toil fields and were not dark or tanned were lighter. Fairy tales and stories of good vs evil, light vs dark. They have influenced human history. Just because Europe went through two world wars, ethnic genocides, and the US went through civil rights means what for the rest of the world. Until Thailand undergoes some rapid demographic change, why would they ever acknowledge this? To them black people are foreigners, think about when Idi Amin was in power in Uganda, he booted thousands of Indians out, landowners, shopkeepers who had been in Uganda or born there for decades etc. It is the tribal nature of humans. The ironic thing is, Thai people themselves get shit on in places like Singapore or Japan.

From what I understand, solicitation is illegal in Thailand. Obviously not like this, but if these are victims of human trafficking there should be something done.

But they haven't done anything against prostitutes from other countries, or even child prostitution? Heard there are a lot of forced prostitutes from former Soviet countries, who have their passports taken away.

It's insane because there are businesses that are very on the nose about facilitating prostitution and they don't do shit. It's the tourism industry there, it's a damn shame.

Especially since Thailand is pretty much a household name for this shit in the U.K. at least.
