ISIS in the crosshairs: Battle for Mosul begins

AFP put together this info-graphic laying out the current situation around Mosul. This is the best high-level overview I've seen so wanted to share:

Red Line is the Mosul Front.
ISIS going apeshit inside Mosul. They know.

On 30 March 2016, ISIL electrocuted at least 15 civilians in the central Bab al-Toub neighborhood of Mosul, for allegedly collaborating with the government and passing information to state officials.[32]

On 7 April, ISIL executed 18 civilians after accusing them of spying for the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and Iraqi army. Eight of them were publicly beheaded in central Mosul, while ten others were burned to death inside a cage in front of hundreds of people.[33]

On 12 April, a source in Nineveh Province stated that ISIL carried out an execution in front of a student's house, in the village of al-Haj Ali in Makhmur District, and in the presence of all the people in the village, for collaborating with the security forces.[34]

On 2 May, ISIS executed 17 citizens in Mosul for refusing to join the battles against the Iraqi security forces.[35]

On the evening of 8 May, ISIS members executed eight civilians by firing squad in al-Ghazlani camp in central Mosul on charges of collaborating with the opposing security forces, ISIS members filmed the execution of the civilians after being sentenced to death by the so-called Sharia Court in Nineveh Province and threw the bodies in a hole in western part of the city.[36]

On 11 May, ISIS buried alive 45 of their own fighters in Qayyarah for fleeing a battle near Bashir.[203][204]

On 19 May, in the city of Mosul, ISIS executed 25 suspected spies by lowering them into a tub of nitric acid. According to witnesses, the victims were tied together with rope before being lowered into a basin containing the corrosive acid.[37]

On 22 June, the group executed 4 of its own commanders for deserting their posts during a battle near Mosul.[26] On 27 July, the group executed 17 of its own commanders for escaping from the frontlines in the battle for the town of Qayyarah.[25]

On 29 July, the group executed 20 civilians alleging that they were cooperating with pro-government forces according to the head of the Nineveh media center.[38] On 20 August, ISIS killed 14 civilians in al-Faisaliah, central Mosul for allegedly collaborating with the pro-government forces.[39] On 23 August, the group executed 6 of its commanders by flamethrowers for trying to escape to Syria.[27] On August 31, 9 youths alleged to be part of an anti-ISIL resistance group were reported to have been executed with electric chainsaws in Mosul.[40]

On 3 September, the group executed 17 of its own members for fleeing from the battle of Qayyarah.[28] The group executed 8 civilians on 12 September by drowning them after charging them of collaborating with Iraqi forces and Peshmerga.[41] On 19 September, five workers of internet cafes were executed on the charge of collaborating with Iraqi security forces.[42] On 20 September, the group executed 6 civilians in Mosul by welding, accusing them of belonging to an anti-ISIL resistance faction.[43] On 22 September, 6 civilians were burned to death on the charges of spying.[44]

On 24 September, ISIL executed 3 of its fighters for fleeing during the battle of Shirqat.[30] 25 civilians who were accused of cooperting with Iraqi security forces were also executed in a similar way to animal slaughter.[45] On 26 September, another seven fighters who fled during the battle for Al-Shirqat were reported to have been executed by being trampled to death by a bulldozer.[29]

On 14 October, Reuters reported that the group executed 58 people suspected of taking part in a rebllion plot were executed by drowning in Mosul. The rebellion plot was uncovered more than a week earlier and was led by a local deputy of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.[205]
There is a resistance movement "M" inside Mosul. They are coordinated and are planning to strike from within Mosul against ISIS once the offensive launches.

Arabic letter for "M" seen above popping up everywhere in Mosul. ISIS is killing anyone suspected of talking about resistance or the impending offensive, and carrying scissors to cut tongues of civilians if they overhear them in markets/public places.

1 million civilians are inside Mosul, and they are of every ethnic fabric: Shia, Sunni, Kurd, etc.

Statement from Iraqi PM Haider Al Abbadi
"Our dearest people in Nineveh province, the victory bell has rung, and the operations to liberate Mosul have begun. I am announcing today the beginning of these heroic operations to liberate you from the brutality and terrorism of ISIS. God willing, we will meet soon on the ground of Mosul where we will all celebrate the liberation and your freedom."

How likely is it that ISIS is eradicated by the time Obama leaves office?

I don't know if eradicated will ever be possible, given the number of potential lone wolves anywhere. But I think there's a good chance Mosul falls before Obama leaves office.

Reading some of those accounts of civilian murders... abhorrent. I hope they are served the justice they deserve.

They made a sport out of torturing and executing people. Abhorrent.

I am against capital punishment but fuck, show no mercy.

Not since the nazis has the thin veil between human rationality and id been so completely fucking obliterated. There's no way every single fighter was born so sadistic... its a doctrine of a few and everyone was forced to buy into it or face the same fate, in the process they probably learned to enjoy it

Beheading, dissolving in acid, chainsaws, buried alive, it's like daesh represents some fetishization with reducing human existence to mush in all the most horrifying ways

Eradicated? Zero. But if Mosul falls, ISIS claim to be the new caliphate will take another big blow. They could become very disorganized in a short period of time.

Even if Mosul is retaken and seal team 6 pops two caps in al baghdadi tomorrow or next week, we'll still be hearing bad news about these guys until 2018

They probably condition fighters to see their enemies as subhuman (calling them heretics and such)

That's a pretty cool quote from the PM.

Hopefully they can keep civilian casualties as low as possible and maximize ISIS casualties as much as possible.

This won't end quickly, will result in hundreds if not thousands of dead civilians and ISIS will simply be allowed to leave at the end of the battle.

What will be interesting is who controls Mosul after the battle. Iraqi military? Shia militia? YPG? Turks? PKK?

What a mess.

If 1 million civilians are in Mosul right now, it looks like the battle will take months and months, even if any of the civilians leave, plus with ISIS booty trapping everything.

Probably won't be until middle of next year before Mosul fully falls or even partially.

It will be extremely bloody I expect many atrocities on both sides unintentional and intentional.

I wonder what percent of ISIS members joined because they were forced or because their family is being held hostage.

The OP says they executed 17 civilians for not joining the fight against the Iraqi military; keep that in mind.

I'm almost afraid to know, but how do you execute by welding 0_0 ?

On 20 September, the group executed 6 civilians in Mosul by welding, accusing them of belonging to an anti-ISIL resistance faction.

I sure as hell not going to Google it

This could easily turn into a humanitarian disaster with how ISIS has used civilians as shields before...

How likely is it that ISIS is eradicated by the time Obama leaves office?

0%. Even if you claim that you have defeated ISIS, insurgents will scatter and regroup into new cells.

The civilians casualties will be horrible. It's in ISIS's interest to make this ordeal as bloody as possible.

That is the most disgusting shit I've ever read since the Unit 731 accounts.

No mercy to the walking cancers directing ISIS in Mosul. Feed their corpses to the pigs.

I am worried that ISIS behaves in Mousl like the japanese did with Manila in WW II, when they were defeated and retiring from the city, they massacred the civil population, one of the worst war crimes in recent history.

How likely is it that ISIS is eradicated by the time Obama leaves office?

In Mosul only or the whole Middle East?

Mosul is possible by January.

A lot depends on how much of the US military in involved. If it's just Black Ops, Seals and Rangers, they probably can take out the leaders, but not completely break ISIS's infrastructure there.

You'll need a US occupation force for several years to oversee things. Obama has not been a fan of that.

If this battle had begun, it doesn't seem like one that'll be done in a few days.

Short of this M resistance pulling off a miracle from within, a lot of citizens will die.

ISIS is killing anyone suspected of talking about resistance or the impending offensive, and carrying scissors to cut tongues of civilians if they overhear them in markets/public places.

Literal sigh after reading that

ISIS has nowhere to go but down. They also lost their Doomsday city(Last stand against the West), Dabiq to the Turks and Syrians earlier today.

It's pretty likely Mosul will fall.

There is gonna be a lot of death. The casualties are going to be in the hundreds of thousands.

This is not going to be a glamorous ride to freedom.
