Battlefield 1: A quick look at the peak in launch day player numbers

Currently online players

PC: 89,093 (24h peak: 171,382)

XBOXONE: 93,722 (24h peak: 248,449)

PS4: 180,562 (24h peak: 272,844)

http://bf1stats.com/

That's a 692,675 peak in launch day concurrent number of players across platforms!

For comparison: The latest game from DICE, Star Wars Battlefront, peaked at 347,974 in concurrent players when looking at the last 24h peak a day from launch, so pretty much half of BF1.

Star Wars Battlefront went on to ship over 14 million copies, but it was a game with bad player retention.

What's even more impressive about the Battlefield 1 peak in the last 24 hours is that the launch day rush yesterday was muddied by the Early Enlisters that have been playing since Tuesday. There was also a "minor" DDoS attack yesterday that DICE had to contend with.

EA had a what now seems rather conservative 15 million sales expectation for Battlefield 1.

How much do you think Battlefield 1 will end up selling? Will it see better player retention than SWB? You guys are welcome to provide other examples of peak player numbers to end user sales comparisons.

Still won't buy this game due to the criminal lack of French and Russians, and the bullshit onesided campaign, but still happy that a WWI game is doing so well, however inaccurate it is. Knew WWI had the potential for success

uh oh, i smell a cod failure.

and i'm happy for that. they need to change that damn futuristic sh!t.

I don't really think we're in for a CoD failure, so much so as BF1 is (potentially imo) the closest thing to a Modern Warfare moment for the Battlefield franchise.

Aka the thing that amplifies the brand cache from "popular brand" to "more popular brand."

Those factions (the French at least) are saved for the DLC, but I understand your disappointment.

Me too and the campaign is 3h30 long lol, I'll make sure to buy it used, I won't support it.

Thats actually not impressive to me. I still remember Black Ops 2 have over a million concurrent players on 360 alone on launch day.

Does it have a shot at outselling COD?

Unless COD loses like 4-5 million sales from the typical 20ish million it gets per game, than no. Including BF1 outselling it's expectations with by a few millions.

Also are they expecting 15 million sold-in or sold-through? Because than that would not be difficult actually if its sold in, I think COD is typically 20ish million sold through and obviously more sold in.

This is going to outsell Infinite Warfare this year. I'M very confident in this opinion!

Honestly, I hope it does. It might convince Activision to go back to a historical (or modern) setting with classic boots on the ground gameplay. The jet-packs and wall running work well for Titanfall but COD is definitely better without it.

Fair enough, but I provided two facts that contributed to yesterday's numbers being lower than they could have been. Showing double numbers than a game that sold 14 million is impressive to me.

I had problems with multiplayer on PC, couldn't login until late in the evening (kept saying i was offline, and that i should go play campaign like a peasant)

The hate bandwagon still hasn't died since the initial trailer, which ended up being the most disliked video in youtube history. Even after a strong showing at E3 and some promising campaign footage, every piece of media released by Infinity Ward ends up getting a bunch of hate. When you factor in the tepid response to the MP beta and the positivity surrounding it's main competitor I can definitely see the game underperforming.

A lot of people couldn't get online yesterday on the PC version of the game as well. I feel like the day 1 numbers this time around aren't all that indicative because of the DDOS attack that happened yesterday. Wouldn't surprise me if the numbers are higher today and tomorrow then actual launch day

Or it's just a hate bandwagon on the internet . I typically don't take anything of that nature seriously because of a bandwagon effect. I don't think using that as a measure anything of evidence is a good idea because it's the internet. It certainly can loss sells, but even so the least sold COD was AW and even that probably already hit 20 million by now.
Also it is the most liked COD reveal trailer too I think.

Very good numbers considering the DDOS outage. I was getting DNS errors and yet using Google's DNS servers, which I'm willing to bet many others are.

I expect even bigger numbers tonight.

I'm glad its seeming to sell well and is getting high reviews. WW1 was a fantastic direction to take the series and it gives the game a visual style that is different to every other shooter on the market.

The campaign is a true winner especially after BF 3 and 4's rather lacklustre ones and multiplayer is ace. Loving all of it.

The hate goes beyond a small group of disgruntled gamers, I mean it has more dislikes than any youtube video ever. Plus the internet isn't some bubble that's impenetrable to the outside world, the poor sales of the xbox 1 very much showed this. I'm sure Infinite Warfare will still end up doing well, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it well below the last couple of entries.

Yeah, PS4 seems to have a very good chance to reach a higher peak today. It has crossed 200k this moment and it's far from prime time right now.

It is a bubble because as some cases of you pointing out internet outrage colliding with real world outrage, I can point out the case with one where the internet outrage didn't collide with real world outrage because you it IS the internet. I could argue that Xbox's case was a little different( if we want to base it solely on dislikes than the "Baby" song shouldn't have sold a lot either during time.)

However, I am not saying it won't sell bad, I am saying using that as evidence is faulty at best.

Surprised PC is the lowest.

Really? Since BF3 consoles always had the upper hand really.
PC players tend to stick longer if the game is good tho. Console players tend to move on quicker to a new game. But still the playerbase on consoles will be higher even after that.

Well deserved and I daresay, will go higher even. I know a few friends who are interested in buying it but haven't made the plunge yet.

Is this the most polished (relatively) BF game at launch? It could possibly well be, no?

EA and DICE making some serious $$$ with this. Both critics and gamers are agreeing it's really an awesome shooter.

This just sits wrong with me. So you'd rather the devs and company that made the game NOT get any money and instead someone else profits from it? Yeah, and people wonder why studios shut down. You have an issue with the game's content or narrative and don't want to play it? Fine. But to buy it used just to spite the devs? If you said you didn't have enough money to buy it new, that's acceptable. But this? Man, really glad I don't work with someone like you (or that you're not in the industry in any way).

Unless you mean you'll just play the SP and have no intention of playing MP and hence, why you think it's not worth $60? I mean, there's a lot of reasons not to buy a game, but I dunno, just out of spite? AND you're still buying it but making sure the devs don't get paid? Ugh.

Well Bieber still had a ton of likes from his fans who would buy his songs whatever, while COD is being openly rejected by it's core audience. :p

Still, you're probably right and looking at dislikes on a youtube video isn't the best way to gauge how well a game will perform. I do think my other points have some validity though.

Are you sure it's it is the core audience and not just trolls or haters with some disgruntled players? COD gets hated on by it's fans too, just like other popular franchises. Again, the video is also the most liked for a reveal trailer. It isn't uncommon that the current iteration isn't well liked, but it is a common thing that they sell well by the next title or the current one ergo despite the poor reception of Ghost, AW, and some cases BLOPS 3 they still end up selling 20ish million( AW poor sales should have affected BLOPS 3, but it didn't ) . Fans or buyers in my experience have been consistently unreliable when it comes to opinion.

Don't want to derail the thread, but nope. Not just haters. I play almost every CoD MP and I find IW not that good. And it's not because I suck, either. It's a rehash of BO3 MP but with added layers of crap like Weapon Variants.

I'm still playing it now (since I have to) and reached level 12.

Regarding Call of Duty sales, I don't think it hit 20m sold. I mean Activision has been very deceptive when it comes to sales figures and has stopped sharing them past BO2. It's usually X amount earned in a day/week, which doesn't necessarily equate to $60 divided by X amount.

Honestly, I think it's a bit of both. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Yeah, the beta has been very underwhelming.

Well deserved. The game is rock solid and the launch has been incredibly smooth, thus far. Seems that DICE (and maybe even EA?) learned their lesson with BF4.

Honestly, I'm more interested in seeing how Titanfall 2 sells. I feel like EA are so determined to throw everything they've got against COD that Titanfall 2 is going to get caught in the crossfire and not reach its sales potential.

Edit - also, we're unlikely to know if it outsells COD because Activision doesn't release sales numbers any more.
