Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Thursday acknowledged and apologized for any sexual harassment or mistreatment of women who worked on his 2016 presidential campaign.

Allegations that male members of his campaign had harassed and discriminated against female campaign workers have been circulating for weeks as the senator weighs a potential second presidential run.

“I thank them, from the bottom of my heart, for speaking out,” Sanders wrote in a statement. “What they experienced was absolutely unacceptable and certainly not what a progressive campaign, or any campaign, should be about.”

He continued, “The allegations speak to unacceptable behavior that must not be tolerated in any campaign or workplace. To the women in that campaign who were harassed or mistreated I apologize.”

Bernie Sanders

@BernieSanders
To the women on my 2016 campaign who were harassed or mistreated, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for speaking out. I apologize.

We can't just talk about ending sexism and discrimination. It must be a reality in our daily lives. That was clearly not the case in 2016.

More than two dozen women have come forward with allegations against campaign staffers. Politico reported Wednesday that a top adviser on the campaign had forcibly kissed a female subordinate after the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

The adviser, Robert Becker, has denied any wrongdoing. Friends of Bernie Sanders, the senator’s main campaign committee, said Becker would not be a part of any future campaigns in response to the allegation against him.

Sanders has not personally been the focus of any of the accusations. He has said he had been unaware of the alleged harassment and mistreatment of his aides during the campaign.

“I was little bit busy running around the country trying to make the case,” Sanders told CNN on Jan. 2.

In his statement Thursday, Sanders admitted his 2016 campaign’s “standards and safeguards were inadequate.” He outlined what steps his 2018 Senate re-election campaign had taken to prevent sexual harassment, including training on the issue for all employees.

The allegations have cast a shadow of Sanders’ potential 2020 run in a likely crowded field of Democratic contenders.
While I won't lose any sleep over Bernie taking the negative press, the timing sure is convenient. Looks like a page right of the Democratic playbook.

Hopefully he runs 3rd party so the socialists and Liberals can eat each other up.

The timing is convenient, yeah, but if there's 24+ women saying shit happened then odds are at least some are telling the truth. Good on him for owning up to it and making changes.

meanwhile, upon learning of similar accusaions, Clinton personally made sure that her "faith adviser" remained employed, and she regularly had meetings with longtime donor Harvey Weinstein during the campaign and weeks after the election.

If anyone on the left thinks an outsider/progressive is going to get the nomination this time around, look at what happened in 2016 and what's happening leading up to the primaries. They'll assassinate the character of anyone that does not toe the party line. Bernie is first because they don't want him to be a problem a second time.

Terrible logic. Remember how many accusers Gloria Allred trotted out to accuse Trump during the campaign? Number of accusers says nothing about actual guilt as history has shown us time and again.

This is another example of why Bernie is not leadership material. Caving and apologizing to accusers based solely on allegations is just spineless pandering. If they want to accuse someone of breaking the law, encourage them to collect evidence, go to the police, and let the legal system handle it.

Anime waifu panty shots are basically the same thing as paintings of the french baroque masters, if you think about it.

Yeah but no. We have expanded the meaning of sexual harassment these days to include flirting and compliments, especially in the minds of young liberal “woke” women. I don’t really believe it happened, and if it did I want to see the documented HR complaints.

And even if it did, it's talking about Bernie staffers at low level positions he never even heard about. Even the initial NYT article begrudgingly buried in the middle of the article that he never heard of it.

The timing is 100% on purpose. But for anyone with a brain, an apology and a pledge to do better should be enough.

But they'll ask about this at any debate he's in and bring it up forever. The same tired "Bernie-bro" narrative.

It is enough, and its something he just did.

Would've been bad if he hadn't confronted the issue like this.
Well it's enough for anyone with a brain.

But just watch. This will be the leading question in every single interview and appearance. Then they'll say his supporters are sexist. They just bring it up over and over to try and control his messaging.

Hopefully people are a little smarter this time since he is already a known candidate now, and people trust him for the most part.

Creepy Joe would get memed into oblivion. They need someone else to stand up but I have no idea who.
Their names are Kamala Harris, Tulsi Gabbard, and Beto O Rourke. All three should be announcing their runs within the next few weeks. Beto has the most meme potential and even then its not terribly high. So they are fairly safe.

Also memes are not necessarily a bad thing. Trump's meme potential was extremely high and it helped him more than it hurt.

Trump's meme potential helped him because he embraced it and rolled with the punches instead of getting offended and asking the internet to pls stop :messenger_crying:

Beta O'Rourke, the fake Mexican who lost to Ted Cruz? Really?

Harris and Gabbard I don't know enough about to comment on. Maybe you're right on them.

While you're right, right isn't what votes for him (double meaning).

His base is a bunch of apologizers. You wouldn't dare call a woman a liar. Believe all women. Why would they lie?

nah, I don't think so. His base already got this with the false sexism charges in 2016.

Some liberals will be more SJW or more naive about feminism and how fucked up it is. But a lot of Bernie voters are the opposite of what you claim, and a lot of them are women who are anti-feminist also. You basically had to be a little suspicious of feminism to go for Bernie over Hillary in 2016, and lots of people did.
