Best and Worst Collector's Editions of 2007

I held off CEs for the most part, except Halo 3...I was seduced by teh helmat. Looks like I was rewarded for the most part. Except Bioshock. I really wish I had bought that CE.

World in Conflict: Collector's Edition had a piece of the Berlin Wall. That's pretty cool.

And I think the Polish collector's edition of WiC wins (going by Wikipedia).

Why aren't we getting it here in Sweden? Massive's office lies in the same city where I live and the only thing we got was the normal LE (the one with the stone).

I think it's up to each country publisher to what add in the box. Polish distributor - CD Projekt (same as The Witcher's publisher and developer at the same time!) - simply rocks.

worst:

the fact that you actually had to open the box in-store to see whether your discs weren't scratched to hell says enough

Bioshock was nice, but the real winner is:
Huge box with magnetic flap.
Jigsaw Puzzle
16 Postcards
Poster
Face Mask
Art book
3 Disc soundtrack with own tracklisting book
Game

And there were TWO versions of it. I went for the silver one.

Worst was Spider-Man 3. Average game + boring videos + REALLY useless bonus character.
Runner-up for worst is Strangehold with crappy version of movie with out-of-sync audio.

Chalk up one for me on that, but black here. Def the best LE this year.

I'm a sucker for Collector's Editions/ so I picked up a few this year. Here's my ranking from best to worst:

Rock Band: Hey it says special edition on the box, doesn't it? If you've jammed with some friends or rocked out on the drums then you already know the deal.

Halo 3 Legendary: I paid 59.99 for mine as well (thanks amazon!). Is this worth the 129.99 original asking price? HELL NO, but for the same price as the regular game, it's the deal of the year. Pimp black cases for the game and bonus discs + different covers + the cat helmet.

Bioshock LE: This is how special editions should be done. The Big Daddy is awesome. The outside packaging is great. The game case art is different than the regular edition and even says limited edition on there.

Lost Planet: I love these metal cases and wish all special editions were like this. The only other games I know that have this or similar cases are RE4/FF13/Halo 2 (though Halo's discs are literally stacked on each other). I wish the discs didn't touch but I am such a sucker for these metal ones. The laser cel included is alright (wish it was better artwork) and the artbook has a cool foil cover.

Assassin's Creed: BOO. You know how I said i like metal cases? I abhor these oversized tin ones. I hated it with Gears and it looks like my mind won't be changed anytime soon. Unlike Gears though, at least Ubisoft had the decency to include a regular game case as well but it looks just like the regular one. The art on the tin is cool but that's about it. Lame Penny arcade leaflet and "artbook" if you can call it that are included as well. Also LOL at the Altair miniature.

COD4: Wow, thanks for the paper cover Activision.

Also, I missed the boat on Persona 3 and had to buy it used, so no bonuses for me =(.

Worst: Halo 3 because it actually scratched the discs. When you finally got one with good discs, they barely fit in the damn case due to the odd shaped plastic that held them in.

Best: I quite like the fold out box for **** Raider Anniversary on PS2.

:( I want to move to Poland now (was planning to study medicine there, but I am gonna study in Stockholm instead).

Best one I got:
Bioshock was the best one I got. THANKS - for being thoughtful and aware of what fans want by including the steelbook case in their Collector's edition, so buyers of that package didn't miss out on anything. The mini DVD case for the soundtrack and stuff was also appreciated. I hate Collector's editions that have a great outside box but the actual disk packaging is crappy. Well done 2K Games and Bioshock!

Worst one I got:
As a buyer of the Halo 3 Legendary edition I appreciated the helmet which was better than I thought it would be, but they didn't give us the metal case of the Limited edition (which is a blessing in hindsight because of the scratched disks, but still...). It's also dissappointing that they are still available almost everywhere which doesn't help its value. As a buyer of the most expensive edition of a game I expect at least EVERYTHING the other editions offer and I don't think I'm alone on that.

Best one I would have liked to have gotten:
Had the press kit for Uncharted been available to the public that would have been the winner (despite crappy disk packaging ;-) ) - but thanks to Sony PR it was only for those who ironically didn't appreciate the game as much as its fans.

Any pics?

The European (or at least the French one) LE of Assassin's Creed had the full sized Altair figure. And it's even quite nice looking.

Disappointing? Inevitable. None of Microsoft's collectors editions have ever been genuinely limited edition and they weren't going to start with Halo 3.

No, your biggest disappointment will come next June when stores are trying to clear their inventory and you can buy it brand new for $40.

Don't think Belgium had that one. I saw tons of big cases, but not a box like that.

We got that same here in Finland and I like it. The figure is very well made.

Yep, it's plastic but still very nice. I have one on the left of my screen here at work, with Halo 2's masterchief on the right.

So basically European editions > America ones.

Its bothersome but not surprising. The last big CE that Bioware did was Neverwinter nights. But actually it was just game merchandise in an especially big box.

Most console LE are really shite, Bioshock was a nice change.

I do love steelbook cases, I hate the big giant tins.

That Uncharted stuff is way nice. I suppose it fits the theme of the game (exploration, adventure) very nice.

my number 1 is the assassins creed limited edition,
with the big figurine, the comic book, the tin box, and a power drink exclusive, ow yeah and a t-shirt xD (belgium, g*me-m*ni*)

2d is halo 3 limited
3th is uncharted press kit :D (i have i have)

my number 1 limited edition I bought in 2007 is the fire emblem t776 special box.

DSC03778.jpg

included: the game, those pluches, a video, cards, a map,..

I don't have a pic... but I think Idolm@ster limited edition wins.

yea, i have that and all the figurines and bonus DVD was pretty awesome. it was super expensive though.

other best:
the MGS portable ops KonamiStyle premium edition with camo PSP was great too. the snake skin PSP case was nice

and DJ Max Portable 2 LEs were great too. i just wish i can find some space to store them cuz they all have big boxes.

Bioshock was also excellent.t he bonus discs, different artwork on the box and Big Daddy figure were sweet

worst:
the US version of Assassin's Creed was definitely bad for what you get. the PA comic and figure were pretty lame. and the big ass tin was a huge waste of space. it comes close to the Prey LE tin

CoD4 was also bad and cheaply made. the bonus DVD was nice but they didn't even use a 2 disc 360 amaray box to store it in. seriously?

Snagged this off the Persona 3 thread (yoinked from Tokubetsu, thanks for the sweet picture), so here you go...doesn't come with the guide, though.

I really hope KOEI will release this edition in Europe!

Damn, what's with those Polish special editions! Anyway, worst for me was Quake Wars it was pathetic, and best (that I actually bought) have to be The Witcher, World In Conflict and UT3.

The Witcher

World In Conflict

Quake Wars

Basically some postcards, and a DVD with some trailers and concept art.

How was Mass Effect? I kind of regret not buying that one just because I love the game so much.

I think the answer to this just depends on how much you enjoy the world of ME. I read the prequel novel before I got the game and I thought the included Codex manual was pretty cool with lots of neat little details. However, I'm assuming most of that info is also buried within the in-game codex as well. I've only popped in the bonus disc for a second and didn't watch any of the videos yet (wanted to finish the game first) but the gamer pics and themes are all pretty damn cool and a nice addition since I refuse to pay to download them on live. Also, the metal case is slick looking. For $10 more, I feel it was well worth it. Especially considering it looks to be more "limited" then most CE's, although that's not saying much.

My vote for best CE goes to Persona 3. Same price as a standard game and both the soundtrack and artbook are very nicely done.

I'm still waiting on my Halo 3 Cat Helmet Edition, but I only paid $60 for it so I don't think I'll be that dissapointed.

I have it too. I got it here in the Netherlands. Pretty cool we get some stuff others don't have.

I always figured it was how publishers apologized for making you wait an extra eight months.

That Uncharted press kit is really sweet.

Given the price (only $10 extra), Bioshock wins.

Biggest disappointment is Stranglehold PS3. The Hard Boiled transfer sucks and doesn't even improve on the latest DVD. And Shane B., I fucking told you these things would be plentiful.

is it because America is much larger that they dont go all out? or is it because they just dont like America as much.
Well, for all the date shafts europe been having, they deserve awesome CE editions.

The worst has to be Halo 3's two special SKUs. The scratched discs and the overpriced cat helmet bomba.

The best, thanks to Borys, is The Witcher. I really feel like playing it now.

I remember the old PC days when games like Ultima V would come with all this stuff in the REGULAR edition.

Love the Ultima games, since I grew up playing on the Commodore 64. The cloth maps that came with IV and V were pretty sweet!

With the Halo legendary I would have rather had a Master Chied statue (like the upcoming McFarlane ones) instead of the helmet!

Best has to be Burning Crusade. I pick it up on a regular basis just to appreciate its heft - but the contents are pretty damn nice as well. Even more amazing when you consider it's "just" an expansion.

The game on both DVD and CD set.
(Well made) Making Of DVD (with actual case!).
Sets of card from the TCG including exclusives.
Map of Outland mouse mat.
Fabulous hardback art book.
In-game pet.

All packaged in that stunning box.

Edit: As shown above! :)

Ah, I was just about to bitch about false advertising, as it looked like it was pretty big on GAME's website. Good to know that we did actually get a full size one.

Glad I didn't go for it in the end.

Those Witcher packs look really good - love the keychain. Shame the demo ran terribly on my MacBook Pro or I'd have to see about importing it. :(

My votes for the worst go to Mass Effect and Bioshock. We were promised soundtracks and with Bioshock you just got a shitty 3-track sampler CD, with the full soundtrack being posted on their website to download for free. (even though it was crap MP3s)

Mass Effect was just as disappointing - they promised me a soundtrack and all I got was 10 tracks (of 37) on a 360 "game" disc.

Pretty much the only thing that I want in a collector's edition is the proper soundtrack CD for the game, and you either don't get them at all, or you get samples from them.

It's that cool in Poland only. So no dice for US chaps.

It makes no sense to import a game in foreign language. I doubt 99.9% of You know polish well enough to play this game.

It has all 29 tracks on the OST disc. Sweet music BTW.

I decided to never buy another special edition of a game after getting ripped off with the garbage that was Half Life 2 CE.

I guess the worst one for me this year was the Forza 2 Collector's Edition.

pa.95085.1.jpg

The packaging is quite nice and the little book is pretty awesome. However the dvd-case looks incredibly cheap and the three 'exclusive' cars are useless because they're on the Auction House anyway.

Then again I only paid 3 euros more for it so I can't complain.

Best one is the Bioshock one, because of Big Daddy.

Worst for me was Mass Effect, the metal case was a flimsy piece of shit and it was all bashed in when it got delivered. Best is probably Lost Planet and Bioshock with the rusty looking case.
