Beta Footage of Nintendo games emerge from 1994 video (Proj Reality, Sound Fantasy)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siTeGPMIwpw

Skip to 5:12 for the stuff you really want.

From a now expired eBay auction, I bring you this video update to Nintendo Service Centers about the first half of 1994.

Supposedly from a collector that got this from inside the company, this video provides an archival look into the glory days of one of gaming's most reputable companies.
The footage is fascinating from a business perspective on how Nintendo will promote their games. The footage also includes footage from:

- Kirby's Tee Shot, the early version of Dream Course
- Sound Fantasy, an unreleased game developed by Toshio Iwai, who developed the Electroplankton title later on, and used the SNES Mouse
- Early Donkey Kong '94 footage where the art for DK and Pauline were much more styled after the original Donkey Kong (tie-less). Mark McDonald redeemed?
- Early Super Metroid footage

And on top of that, around 18 minutes in, great footage of the original Nintendo 64 "Project Reality" prototypes.

I love all the alliteration in the video. "Decathelon of doom" sounds so wonderfully video gamey.

WTF @ 9:30 with the Kirby's Tee Shot footage when the guys says, "Each shot takes careful planning . . . and just the right amount of english."

I am cracking up listening to this because the guy doing the voice work is local radio host Dori Monson. Just silly hearing him talk about video games.

Looking through q playthrough of Kirby's Dream Course, I don't think any of these "courses" exists in the final game at all. In fact they're all just extremely basic and flat with no ramps up or down.

Here you can see Kirby's "swing" animation being pretty different, and the prototype HUD being closer to a normal Kirby Life Bar instead of Tomatoes.

HOLY CRAP. Totally remember seeing Sound Fantasy at the Nintendo CES booth in Las Vegas... wow that game looked really cool. :(

Here's Super Metroid. Early version on the left, released game on the right:

Different tiles, no hooks on the ceiling. Mini-Kraid is basically the same though.

Some very minor tile differences.

No Spin in Samus's ship.

He's the map they show for the super guide for Super Metroid. Based on the actual map, the map layout here is nowhere to be found in the final game, but is a little close to the final one. The right slop is replaced with "stairs" in the final game.

It almost hurts to hear Silicon talk about their projected future with Nintendo. :(

Great stuff, though.

Wow, this is absolutely terrific. It's not often I get to see any new footage from this era. Fascinating

Incredible that someone just recently stumbled across this. I never cease to wonder how many other relics from gaming's past lie undiscovered out there.

The best days to be a gamer.

Super Metroid remains unparalleled in its genre.

Awesome video. I'm surprised I missed the auction, I collect promo VHS tapes as well. At least something this old and obscure won't get caught by YouTube's copyright ID system.

I've never played on actual Nintendo 64 myself, but that "Nintendo 64 = supercomputer" hype was ridiculous. Even Krazy Ken's PS2 (Iraqis use it to launch missiles) and PS3 (dat Cell) could not compete.

Have they ever really spoke about those Project Reality tech demos? They don't resemble N64 games in any way. Did SGI overpromise Nintendo on what they could actually deliver at a $250 price?

Total burn on Nakayama.

Also, "Less than $250" :(
Yeah, because that's what the N64 really needed, a price cut at launch, not a CD drive...

The Project Reality part sent chills down my spine, making me remember that era as a kid, when i was anticipating the N64 like a crazy person.
I'll probably won't live those emotions again, that Nintendo was dreamful to me.
Thanks for sharing!

Man Stunt Race FX was such a piece of shit. Can't believe I bought that on release day. Griffey and Donkey Kong were dope though.

Man, this is awesome. I grew up during this era and the entire package, from the content to the video quality, just brings a huge wave of nostalgia. Thanks for sharing this!
