I really don't care how much money Lucas gives away, I don't think I'll ever like him again.

I remember reading an an article in Forbes about the philanthropy of Gates and a few of his close friends, thought it was pretty awesome. I like these kinda of posters - really add a visual aspect to all these figures being thrown about. Helps to put it into perspective

If I was rich I'd do the same. The thing is, after you've got a couple billion in the bank, there's not much to spend it on other than to give it away.

I donated to Wikileaks. Has Gates done that?

The great thing about him is what he does is actually substantial and measurable in terms of the benefits

When you see other famous people doing charity work as UN ambassadors, animal rights activists, giving money to obscure causes, etc. just comes across as incredibly superficial and self-serving

He is the hero we deserve, but not the one we need right now. So he must stake it. Because he is not a hero. He is a silent Investor. A watchful Philanthroper. A Silicon Knight.

Great dude who has said a few things that I have followed since I was in school. Hope that he sticks around for a long time and can encourage more and more people to give.

So what's GAF's take on this?

1) Look at that bunch of greedy Americans

2) If these fuckers were taxed properly, we could keep all that money in the USA to forgive everyone's student loans.

How can he ever afford food after doing these things? At least give him some tax breaks the poor thing!

But seriously, this is how a rich person should act.

I would like bill gates or warren buffet to pay my student loans, so I guess 2 for me.

A. Bill Gates is fucking awesome, and I dunno why you'd wanna denigrate that by bringing in rubbish divisive politics about rich vs poor.

Also, if all rich people were like Bill Gates (and he's done a good job at convincing a fair whack of really rich ones), world would be a much better place.

As far as paying taxes go; him paying his fair share (or even the peeps of the Giving Pledge) alone isn't going to do much for a system that actually requires a consistent application of more tax on a significant proportion of money that flows through the economy...

Anyway... Bill Gates is a hero of mine - a hyper rational achiever that believes strongly in efficacy and humanistic behaviour. Another reason I like him is for his stance on Nuclear... to paraphrase "New nuclear is an essential, even primary part of the energy mix that will replace fossil fuels."

so he saves them from a virus only for them to die from hunger?

Gates is also heavily involved in figuring out solutions for bringing drinking/irrigation water for people in impoverished countries to do something help solve that problem too.

He's also heavily involved in scientific efforts toward developing crops that yield more food in poor soil and water conditions, but he's doing some of that work with the evil Monsanto corp, so rage away.

Modern hero.

But he has got to stop saving people and instead save humanity. Aim more in energy. I know it is a big area for him but he know realizes that all his other work is in vain if he can't address this area. Go, Bill . . . help solve the problem.

Sorry, Zaptruder.

I should have put an option there just for you:

3) I don't know when people are obviously joking. RAGE!

Actually though, you bring up some good points. First, even taxing the "1%" out of all their money wouldn't fix the USA's financial problems. Second, you are spot on about nuclear energy.

He has way more money than he or his family could ever possibly use. It's the least he can do to reinvest in the society that made him that way. Still, in comparison to most super mega rich assholes he's probably the shining example.

If he were to give all of his money away at once, he would be giving less. Also he doesn't believe in dynastic wealth.

I'm really against his views on education (running schools like businesses and imbuing corporate-think from an early age) but his work on saving lives is simply fantastic.

Hate how he ran MS and his stance on open sourcing, love him as a rich billionaire using his money to help the poor.

I wish he would back LFTR nuclear tech instead oftravelling wave reactors which seems to be harder to build, produce more nuclear waste in comparison. LFTRs are meltdown proof where as I am not too sure about travelling wave reactors.

Throw us a bone Gates and explain this one as we all know you ain't stupid and you do give a shit about the people.

Edit:
for peeps wanting to know more about the two nuclear technologies in question:
LFTR explained in 5 minutes but continues on for 2 hours to explain more in depth:

Travelling wave reactor talk given by Gates himself:

Those hipster excel graphic sheets completely lost me. Only Wired or mashable make graphic so annoying.

Somebody translate them back to text and I will read it.

Let me humbly apologize for using your pithy shit stirring as a launching point to make additional points about why Bill Gates is awesome.

But... he's a big backer of the Khan Academy...

I like the fella, but I'm not a fanboy; assuming that he's going to be right about everything. But knowing that he is this hyper rational, efficacy focused kinda guy - he probably has some pretty cogent points on pushing forth the ideas on education that he is.

But, I'm not actually familiar with his education stance (beyond knowing that he does back the Khan Academy - of which I'm a major believer/fan) - to you have links to any talks/articles that may have featured that stuff?
