BioShock Infinite among most expensive games of all time?

Drunkeness aside, this is how I feel as well.

Yeah, it is a lot of money, but notice how it is going to a game that is trying to push some boundaries. It is the best comparison the gaming industry has to the 160 million budget that Lincoln had.

Trying to push boundaries by spending a billion dollars seems like the worst idea possible in the games industry.

I have a bit on my end too. It's on the same level as AC3 and Red Dead for my casual friends as far as games they absolutely MUST play. I have super casual friends who only have Wii that are pissed they can't play it. I really think the Americana vibe and just overall uniqueness of it is gonna drive a lot of interest. I can see people being like "oh, the old school America game, right?"

You guys have cooler friends than me.

At least trust common sense, then, which points to this game having nowhere near that kind of budget.

Maybe the 200 million takes into consideration the money Take 2 could have been making if they had the Bioshock team pretending to make games for Sega.

I have no clue about marketing costs, but the 100 million development budget seems quite reasonable for a 200 man team working 5 years.

That's 100k per employee a year on average, which is a quite common in IT projects. My job has similar budgets and we don't employ any really high earners.

I suppose we will have to wait and see, as it's incredibly hit or miss. GTA4 and Max Payne 3 were definitely NOT worth the asking price (the latter is a linear shooter that should have been made for about 1/3 of the price and in half the time).

Red Dead took up a lot of money and was excellent, but even then I don't think it was worth the asking price and development length.

Let's not forget XCOM and Spec Ops: The Line, two other games with protracted development that had tremendous value. Sometimes their investments don't pan out, such as the case of games like LA Noire and The Darkness I/II, but you have to appreciate their ambition, especially for a public game company.

I think it was pretty obvious. Shit's just too expensive now and it's accelerating the inevitable crash. I've never seen an industry that was so suicidal before.

well, it's on par for a blockbuster movie and halo 3 beat out any movie ever in gross revenue for 24 hours or some such.

"Bioshock Infinite ALLEGEDLY Among Most Expensive Games of All Time".

Also, regardless of the actual budget, it's pretty clear a ton of money has gone into marketing. When was the last time (if ever) that a game was advertised on buses? GTA IV?

Honestly, I feel a little guilty that I'm probably not buying this game at launch. Creatively daring games like Infinite need to be supported. But I've got my backlog too! Urgh...I may just cave in and buy it.

damn I'm not really interested in this game but now I hope it does well. If it doesn't sell well then I think it will impact all gaming publishers in a negative way, at least for us. I hope that ps4 will help keep dev costs down at least the first 2 years until publishers have to push graphics and gameplay further to compete.

That marketing budget seems irrational. I think the publisher should take a second look at the game's sale projections.

But yeah, it's probably well overestimated, as even 1,000 golden cod pieces do not cost that much- I would know. Then again, MS supposedly spent over $200 million (perhaps over $300 million) for Halo 4 and $500 million for Kinect's marketing.

Even if Ken or 2K posted proof that the "unnamedanalyst" was wrong, people would still think they were lying or trying to cover up. I haven't seen anymore ads for Bioshock Infinite then for Borderlands 2 back before it was coming out.

From what I've seen, the art direction is so fucking good that the "technical details" don't even matter. It's not Crysis 3, but Bioshock Infinite will be a screenshot generator for sure.

Keep eyes peeled on the Bullshot thread on Tuesday, this one is going to impress.

Thank you! I'm getting bloody annoyed at the comparisons to CDPR when there are such substantial differences in the basic economies of the nations in which the respective developers are located.

This is not to slight CDPR in any way though, but at some point people must THINK a little before drawing the comparisons.

CDPR are also HUGE relatively - they're like the EA of Poland.

Wasn't the $500 million split between kinect and windows phone?

No , but a game lasts much longer than a movie and is infinitely more interactive. (At least they should be)

But someone REALLY needs to update the OP

i don't know why that should factor into price. interactivity isn't inherently good.

This needs to be in the OP.

Wasn't Bioshock Infinite in development hell?

Unless they make it big in the PC market, I'm pretty sure the game will barely break-even.

The console market is bloated right now, it's the end of the generation and people aren't buying as many new games out there. Why?

There's WAY too many good games that have been released in the past are mainstream hits.

We'll see how the game does in D.D, hopefully well enough to recoup the costs.

Oh ya, I'm gonna downsample from 2000p

Lets do this.

Trying to push boundaries by spending a billion dollars seems like the worst idea possible in the games industry.

Even if that number were true, this is a massive exaggeration.

There's no way in hell it cost $200M.

At half that, Irritational and BioShock are probably out of business. No way in hell they sell enough games to make that back.
