While not on the subject of review scores. (thank god)

Anyone think the splicers will use plasmid powers too against you? Or was this already shown?

Make threads for all three of the new reviews. Continue the march to glory!

Edit: Hey! It's Giancarlo on the Gametap review. He used to work for OPM. Was wondering where he headed off to...

Edit2: (To GFex's comment) Splicers
do use plasmids. I saw one trailer where one teleported away and then threw a fireball at the player.

I hope they do something besides shoot at you with a revolver and swing a pipe.

Someone needs to get the average % as of now.

Oh, they do way more than that...

So my hard mode demo time is now down to 17 minutes, beaten with 7 health packs and 3 EVE hypos left.

Also, you can go through the fire in the beginning without being hurt, and there is DEFINATELY a melee counter with the wrench, but the timing's wierd. It's easier to just wait for them to launch at you, then strafe and attack them at 90 degree angles, they don't really have a lot of horizontal means of attack.

Hey guys remember when there were like 10 people excited about this game?

It's pretty cool what a fantastic game can accomplish, I think.
It has come a pretty long way since then. I wasn't too excited about the original abandoned Nazi base setting, but I knew the game would be awesome since Irrational was making it. I was so happy when they changed the setting to the underwater utopia.

Those are unique types of splicers (yes I have the game)

So not counting UGO that's 17 reviews with an average score of 98.3.

So how do sites like Metacritic and Gamerankings translate a letter grade like an A into the base 10 numeric system?

I would assume it would be a 10. (I'm guessing A is the best score possible)

It looks like they count A+ as 100%, A as 95%, etc. Though they separate the PC reviews and the Xbox 360 reviews.

Do they have an A+ on their scale? I checked through their reviews and couldn't find a single A+ rating. (Even in the breakdown sections- i.e. sound, graphics, gameplay, etc.)

A = 95% usually, they do indeed have an A+ rating.

Ah, ok. I went back and checked their Twilight Princess review and didn't see a single A+ in the breakdown so I assumed it didn't exist. :lol

Edit: Gears of War got an A+. :/

The first hour or so is pretty ho-hum, but then you reach a certain area, and well things get a little interesting to say the least. Game finally clicked into gear, was getting kind of worried.

Waiting is the hardest part. :( I'm actively not playing the demo anymore, don't want to get too deep into replaying it beforehand.

Oh, I called a relative with a 360 about something else and at the end of the phone call just casually mentioned 'oh, the Bioshock demo is fucking awesome huh'. He replied he hadn't downloaded it yet because the preview he saw a few months back was "awful". I yelled at him until he agreed to d/l it ASAP and give it a shot. :lol You'd think based on this forum and general internet buzz the game would be an automatic for a guy like him (HDTV, 360, loves FPS) but he not only had no idea it was supposed to be good but assumed it was shit. Bizarre.

DEMI"S IMPRESSIONS having beat the game.

I believe this game will have a very nice backlash coming its way.

It's certainly deserving of its high marks, but to be given a perfect 10 or 5? I don't believe this to be the case, sorry.

Having finished the game on Normal, and having not played System Shock 2, these are what I did not like about BioShock:

- Hacking is useless and gets just annoying after hacking the 100th Vending Machine doing the same pipe maze puzzle. Couldn't they have varied these up or something?

- LOTS of useless stuff (see hacking above); Guns you wont bother to use, Plasmids you wont bother to use

example (spoilered, not story related):

The last gun you get is the Crossbow, but by this time your Shotgun will already be upgraded, and chances are you haven't even touched any of the other guns. It's useless.

- Inventing stuff is pretty useless and limited, you can only make certain ammo, and maybe a couple Tonics that I could see. This could have been really sweet, but it's just really not.

- Lots of multi-goals, i.e. "go here and get this, now go all the way here to get this", distracts and halts the overall progress of this rollercoaster ride

- Shotgun is overpowered when upgraded (which isn't particularly a bad thing, per se), makes all other guns useless (see USELESS note above)

- Last boss is pretty tame, cool, but tame and easy (see note above; Shotgun pwns)

Gonna spoiler (not story related) this one:

ESCORT MISSION AT THE VERY END OF THE GAME?!

- I think I got the bad ending, but it was a pretty lame ending, I plan on replaying it again and getting the other ending (I dont believe there are 3 endings, just two)

- Maybe I don't have the right Tonic, but why is there 4 zeros in the money counter, when the max you can go up to is $500? Not even $999?

The story is good, but pretty easy to figure out if you're paying attention or you're all too familiar with the classic book of Plot Twists(tm). The atmosphere is great, the art direction is great, the theme is great, the usual aesthetic (is that the right word?) stuff is just solid and high marks. This is why the game is getting such high marks, because it's just so easy to ignore the actual gameplay because you're so immersed in the environment, and you want to progress further and see how this tale unfolds, by searching every nook and cranny for that one Audio Diary.

...

You have the option to pay for a hack, and for the most part it's fairly inexpensive. Plus since you find a good amount of ammo and pickups in the game, money isn't a problem. Or you can buy auto-hack tools.

Shotgun is overpowered though.

Paging Ned Flanders

Speaking of which, that thread was locked between the time I started writing this and hit reply...

The thing that has me extremely enthused for it, even though I didn't find the gameplay to be all that miraculous or revolutionary, is the atmosphere and art is a cut above anything and everything I've played previously. In all those "are games art?" debates I'm on the side of games being a cruder form of art -- less expressive and accomplished than movies or literature. However, if there were more games like Bioshock I'd have to change my tune. Not only doesn't the plot insult one's intelligence, it's actually interesting and clever, and the visuals tell a story all on their own. The architecture and advertisements and decor tell a story that is more vivid and striking than most games are able to convey through cut scenes: The sense of urgent progress and hopeful/fearful optimism and Utopian ideas based on intellectual, physical or racial superiority that marked the early/mid 20th century (Rand, Hitler, Communism, etc.), and how those ideals crumbled over time.

I mean, just one room in that game - the one scene where you witness a crumbled, abandoned room where a party was going on with the huge neon "Happy New Year 1959" sign - that one scene is so informative and vivid it's like a painting.

demi just wants to rile up the neoGAFers, he can't legitimately love a game in the 9.8 way that isn't Advent shitty.
He actually LOVES the game. He wont' stop talking about it and keeps commenting on what a rewarding experience it was. I have to keep telling him to shut up!

I didn't read his comments about the game though because I don't want to spoil one iota of it.

well like i said, that makes sense why his comments are this way... to rile up neoGAFers. It's all very negative, basically the only positive thing is "the atmosphere and graphics are great so you want to explore it a lot. Oh and the shutgun is cool."

I mean even the story which he says is "good", is basically distilled down as cliche and using the book of standard plot twists so...
