Black: GameSpot Review

Do you remember?

Edit: Gek, the % measures the secondary objectives. You can end the game with a 30% if you want.
:lol The ending is garbage. It just ends abruptly. It feels like it was just cut off

So how it's going for you?

Awesome, I got ambushed in scene identical to
The Rock
and then another intense heavy battle where
I had to hide behind pillars being reduced to rubble, I couldnt see shit behind all the dust so I just unloaded into the clouds, ran out of amo and was taken out.
So much fun.

Oh, damn. How many levels are there?

Okay, that sounds badass. I can't wait to relive a classic movie moment.

What ending? Black is a trilogy. Even if you didnt know it was a trilogy, it's freakin EA for chrissakes. You think they won't make sequels on this? I bet the sequel is already being worked on right now

Dark ops difficulty is such a disgrace. The only thing difficult about it is completing objectives. You know your game is fucked when you have to make it difficult by making it a collect-a-thon

The reason you can beat it in a day and it has no multiplayer is probably so that EA can get suckers to double dip on a fleshed out 360 version labeled "BLACK: Reloaded" or whatever six months down the line. Fight against this practice by not opening your wallet...

I will say, that it's hard for me to take review scores and opinions of FPS games seriously considering the industry's current relationship to this genre. Reviewers seem to frequently be on all weird kinds of crack.

Look at CoD2 360 having it's crap Live features downplayed or ignored by almost everyone.

Look at Halo 2 offering up a terrible campaign and being so shoddy in many ways while getting "OMG, BEST GAME EVAR" scores -just- because it took Halo 1 lan party online, even while it introduced new issues and balance problems as a free bonus.

There're 9 levels, and you just described level 5.

look at what gamespot gave halo 2.

9.4

nuff said.

halo 2 received a 9.4, which is just absurd.

some of you need to form an opinion off your own experience with the game.

i haven't been able to find a copy, but my friends who actually purchased the game have returned nothing but effusively positive impressions.

i don't trust these hacks...er, reviewers.

which means a lot of people fell for the hype.

without naming names, the same could be said for any number of franchises this gen.

anyway, you missed the point.

halo 2, to me, is average -- at best.

yet it scored a 9.4 from gamespot, which tells ME that their opinion of entries in this genre holds no weight.

it's about YOUR experience with the game.

Gek clearly loves this game, which means you just might, too.

don't base your opinion of the game off some hack's review.

You're basically doing the same shit we're doing in this thread, the same shit you're arguing against. Your friends have fallen for the hype.

it also shows most people thought the game was that good.

phonte, you have never saw a game review and said that game must suck?

and black had alot of hype too.

Does not compute. :)

EDIT: But to be serious what FPS's do you like? You mentioned COR and Deus Ex which I also like but are about as far away from black as is humanly possibly. And you didn't like Deus EX invisible War. Okay we are still in agreement. You dislike Halo a lot more than I do but then I'm not the biggest Halo guy outside of the multi-player portion of it.

If I were to pick the closest companion game to Black conceptually, I would have to go with Doom 3. If you liked that then I could see you liking Black or the same crowd being attracted to either game. I don't mean that as an insult either. I didn't like Doom 3 but of course there were some people who did because of the graphics and such. I won't argue against any aspect of the graphics or sound proper. It's all the other stuff that is a problem for me. What is exciting to you about Black after what you've read in reviews or user impressions? I'm actually asking a serious question here? What are you looking for in this game? I'm curious to see since I would be suprised if you loved COR that you could find black acceptable (I know you haven't played Black yet. Just making the point). Not that liking one is mutually exclusive to the other. Just that they provide pretty much a terrfic basis of comparison like I mentioned earlier.

Games that get average reviews just might be fun? Wow, you dont say

Unfortunately Black isn't one of those games

And he shoudn't. I respect all developers. I am one. :)

But the last thing that works as a developer is posting on forums or battling the forum people on your game whether I disagree with their opinion or not. It just never works. After pumping some much time and effort into something it's impossible to be objective about it. You work hard on a game. You put it out there. And then people will like or dislike it. You really have no control over that latter part.

some FPS that i like:

Chronicles of Riddick (i kept thinking..circle of red..is there a fps called circle of red?..lol. yeah, this game is a real gem. came out of nowhere any blew me away immediately. it still ranks, imo, as the best looking game on the xbox - yes, even better than chaos theory)

system shock 2

deus ex

call of duty

half life 2

battlefield 1942 (and its mods)

Brothers in Arms

moh: allied assault pc

no one lives forever

global assault ( :lol i wonder if anyone here remembers this blatant counterstrike clone....actually, it's from the original makers of counterstrike)

aliens v predator

FPSs that, imo, suck:

halo 2 (up until the end, halo was a decent - if not spectacular - game)

every moh after allied assault

serious sam

painkiller

far cry

fear (don't own it, but what i played of it was repetitive and uninteresting)

no one lives forever 2 ( wow..how the HELL did they go from the amazing no one lives forever to this shitty sequel??)

deus ex 2

quake (pick any version...always hated that bunny hopping spaz fest)

i'm sure there're more i can include.

that's just a list off the top of my big head.

The demo session I was in was filled with Euro journalists (mostly German, judging from the accents) who clearly had their laundry list of stunningly boring questions prepared. "How many levels?" to which Alex responds "I don't know, we haven't finished it yet. One thing I can tell you though is that this is running on PS2, it's not video, and we're only running at 50% of what we can do graphically, and 30% of the whole game. You're not going to buy this game in February and wonder what the fuck happened. You're not going to look at it and wonder why a bunch of levels were taken out. Or why it doesn't have a proper ending. There won't be any talking plants."

Are you fucking kidding me? He totally rips on Halo and then produces this crap pile of a game.

What a fucking joke!

Keep up the good fight. :lol You're entitled to disagree with the vast, overwhelming majority. But to claim that the swarming throng of millions and millions of people somehow were somehow tricked into falling into some kind of hype chasm and not simply all agreeing to the reality of the fact that Halo 2 rules is kind of silly.

Riddick.

Well I was just just curious. Like I said imo Black is closer to Doom 3 or maybe even Painkiller conceptually than things like No One Lives forever, Half-Life, etc....

The closest thing it's to on your like list is maybe AVP or Call of Duty,(and Serious Sam although you didn't like that one) although it's not really like specifically any one of those games. It contains elements of each.

After you rent or buy post impressions. I would be curious to see what you think about it and whether the direction they took is fertile ground after playing it. Looking at your track record of likes and dislikes, I would be suprised if you liked it but stranger things have happened I suppose.

Wario64 said:

If that's the case then there's zero difference between Hard and Black Ops. I haven't unlocked Black Ops, but it seems probable that there aren't even enemy-dropped health packs. Is that not the case?

honestly, i'm not ragging on those people who disliked it.

i've yet to play the game, so i haven't formed any opinion of it just yet.

i do know, however, that i can't trust a review from some site that awarded a thoroughly average game like halo 2 a 9.4

you may just be right...i'm not into repetitive shooters, which is why serious sam and painkiller don't receive any props from me.

i guess i just like the setting of black, though i haven't played it yet.

if my blockbuster has it, i'll rent it tomorrow.

i'm curious to know what suggestions of avp are found in black.

Black ops still has health packs (heh I've been calling it dark ops this whole time. and by health packs i mean the ones that automatically heal you, no 'carry' packs). Only difference is that you have to complete all objectives, which is stupid imo. Makes it tedious instead of difficult. You miss one objective and you have to replay the entire mission. There's also 'destructible' objectives too, which are only found in black ops. And you get a M16 in every level with unlimited ammo...which kinda defeats any difficulty you'll be facing

Wario64 said:

Now hold on there just a second... what? Unlimited ammo, as in Chicago Typewriter (RE4), or are there just plenty of ammo packs?

Chicago Typewriter (but you must reload clips still)

Actually, all guns have unlimited ammo. And get this: YOU CANT TURN IT OFF. Once you beat the game on hard difficulty, you get unlimted ammo forever on your save file. Unless there's a cheat menu that I'm overlooking

phonte said:

Let me not over-sell that aspect then... :)

It has more to do with establishing a consistent sort of dark tone and maintaining it. Rather than specifically seeing face huggers or things like that happening.

One of the few things I like about the game is that tone is right. You could make a good game using this theme and this tone...They just didn't do it this time.

The thing I always like about the Aliens videogames is that even if they aren't the best they tend to get that dark tone and theme right. The levels look like you expect them to look. Black gets overly repititive with it, but the game looks art wise like you would expect it to. So that's kinda what I meant there.

some might agree

it not as good as

halo but I doubt

many will agree its

average. BTW why to you

double space everything??

Take your Dual Weilding and shove it up your ass.

Blasting a door off its hinges to open it is a big step forward IMO.
