But whether it was needed or not, Blade Runner 2049 is as close to a perfect sequel as has ever existed, a phenomenal return to the world created by Philip K. Dick and Ridley Scott, the masterpiece result of a thousand expert minds making every right call as they worked toward a singular goal over the course of many years: simply to do this gargantuan thing justice. Needless to say, they succeeded--and then some.

Whereas it took five different versions for Ridley Scott to satisfyingly answer the question raised by Philip K. Dick's speculative-fiction novel, ”Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" (four of which suggest the director himself didn't quite recognize what was most fascinating about his own film), Villeneuve gets it right on his first attempt, operating from the premise that when androids dream, their innermost desire is to be human.

At the helm and in complete command of his movie with dark, ambient magic, Denis Villeneuve crafts a mysterious noir thriller the pushes existential boundaries, and nails the essence of the "Blade Runner" spirit.

Denis Villeneuve! I know it's a team effort, but this guy hasn't been connected to a bad movie yet. Can't wait to see where he's headed next, and I can't wait to see this movie.

Dave Bautista carries this film. Awesome to hear the good reviews.

just be forewarned about the gamespot review, it potentially could spoil when in the film a character is introduced. if you want to go in completely blind, well i guess don't read any reviews anyway, but just wanted to throw that out there.

A warning: a lot of these reviews have a spoiler that wasn't part of any of the marketing. It seems like it's less of a spoiled reveal, and more of an aspect of the premise that was left out of the marketing, but wanted to warn folks.

Honestly, I expected this movie to be bad.

Like, I never imagined we could ever get a worthwhile sequel to one of the best movies ever made.

Villeneuve movies are not bad. You might not like them very much, they might only be good and not great, but they are never bad. He is far too competent a director to make a bad movie.

What a great year for movies. Avoiding spoilers until next week is going to be hell.

Kermode usually reviews on the week of release so it might not be till next Friday. Maybe he'll do the observer review on Sunday
