Blade Runner...I'm going to get roasted for this

Watched it last night. While I was constantly impressed by the art design as well as all the environments, the movie was just not great to me. I suppose if I saw the movie when it came out I'd be more impressed by it. While watching it I was constantly reminded of one of the parts of the Animatrix (the story about the history of the machines) as well as AI and similar science fiction movies. I realize that Blade Runner essentially started all this stuff, but as a movie I wasn't impressed. Sure it was a "good/alright" movie, but it never struck me as being one of the "greatest" movies of all time.

It came on pretty good, but as the movie progressed I got bored. Ford was extremely dull and monotone throughout the entire movie, as if he was just phoning in the preformance; yeah he's monotone in general, but it seemed more blatant to me in this movie. To make matters worse, I was not interested in any of the characters in the movie. The one girl who originally didn't know she was a replicant was interesting, but her entire reaction to the situation seemed pretty weak; obviously as a replicant her emotions were primitive, but I would have expected a bigger responce from her at the hearing of the news. You'd think she'd confront her maker or something.

The story was extremely interesting and good imo, but it dragged on for way too long in certain parts. This was complicated by some rather strange editing. Like for instance, towards the end of the movie Ford is fighting the last replicant after killing its love interet (the female replicant). At one point the replicant breaks Ford's fingers and tells him he's going to count to 3 and then kill him. But once he counts to four there's a scene where the replicant is seen bent over the female replicant's dead body, kissing it slowly. Where did that come from? He had already seen the body previously. Little things like that confused me.

Overall I was pretty disappointed by the movie. From a visual perspective it was brilliant and looked on par if not better than many movies out today, but in terms of the actual movie I was not really grabbed by it. I'll watch it again today though.

A few minutes ago someone explained the theory/fact that Ford's character was indeed a replicant, which is very interesting. I simply couldn't put the pieces together at 1am

7.5/10

You are f'n DEAD to me!

I want you to get this f*** where he breathes! I want you to find this nancy-boy PhoenixDark, I want him DEAD! I want his family DEAD! I want his house burned to the GROUND! I wanna go there in the middle of the night and I wanna PISS ON HIS ASHES!

That whole Decker is a replicant shit pisses me off. Even though a few years ago Ridley Scott said yes Decker is a replicant, I still don't accept that statement.

We're black posters man. We gotta stick together.

I didn't say the movie sucked, I'm just saying it never struck me as one of the "greatest" movies of all time. It was ok.

It's a love it or hate it movie. Actually, I think to get the maximum enjoyment out of it, you have to be both a movie buff and a scifi buff.

You have pretty awful taste so it doesn't surprise me that you only found it competent.

My taste is awesome and I like sci fi movies, but meh this wasn't great. It was definitely better than AI (which was very good but too long), but I can't honestly say it was better than something like Minority Report

My problem was more with the flat delivery. It just made me more bored.

yeah, i can understand that. i just look at the way he spoke as a deliberate choice that helps the atmosphere.

...I have no idea what you're talking about...

I did watch Rear Window last week and give it a 10/10. And I saw Die Hard and love it too. But this was just...ugh. Ok but nothing special

Rear Mirror?

Minority Report gets far too much hate. Best thing Spielberg has done in 15 years*.

*at least up until the final 20 minutes, where Spielberg turns the movie into something, well, Spielbergian.

PD, are you aware that Blade Runner and Minority Report are both from the same author, Philip K. Dick?

Did you watch the Director's Cut, or the one with Harrison Ford narration? The narrated version is inferior (Ford deliberately did a poor job on the voice-over so the studio wouldn't use it--fission mailed).

Either way, this is one of the sci-fi greats, and I'm going to have to concur that you have bad taste.

Ain't that the truth? I sat transfixed in my seat thinking, "This movie is going to have an authentic PKD ending!" Not to be.

Flat Delivery... That almost describes the voice overs added to the theatrical cut, please tell me you didn't watch the theatrical cut

If only Spielberg would direct the first 90% of his films, then hand it off to someone else to end them, Im almost positive he would have another 3-4 masterpieces.

What I want to know is, when did Blade Runner become the traditional New Year's movie? I saw it played on television a few years back one night when I was too sick to go out and celebrate, and ever since then I noticed someone's always playing it on New Year's.

I still haven't seen this movie.

Wasn't there supposed to be a directors cut special edition next year?

I got the directors cut for $5 at walmart. I also don't see what's so amazing about this movie, one of the most overhyped films I've seen.

I rarely get to watch movies so I decided to rent a bunch for the holidays.

-Conan the Barbarian: 9/10
-Princess Bride: 6.5/10
-Rear Window (Hitchcock): 10/10
-Die Hard: 9.5/10
-Lady in the Water: 6/10
-Die Hard with a Vengence: 7.5/10
-Blade Runner: 7.5/10

I have to agree with Phoenix on this one... I got it on DVD recently, after hearing all these great things about it. Since I love science-fiction movies, and especially dark, dystopian visions of the future, my hopes were high for Blade Runner.

As Phoenix says, it starts out great, but then it just sort of "drags on" and all of a sudden it's over.
There wasn't really anything in it that "grabbed me" and got me into the movie.
And the way it ended..wow, when the screen faded to black all I could think was "Please don't end like this, please don't end like this, please don't...DAMN!".
Then i thought, the theatrical version is probably alot better, but after seeing some of the comments in this thread, it apparantly isn't.

It's a beautiful movie though, the art direction is spectacular. Some things do look dated now (the cars for example), but overall it holds up amazingly well for a movie that old, and I can see what an experience it must have been to see it when it first came out.

I did think it was okay, and I definately have to watch it again since my first impression of movies are often very different from the second, but I have a hard time seeing what's so brilliant about it apart from how stunning it looks.

Minority Report > Blade Runner

Oh I went there.

If it weren't for a shaky final act in Minority Report, I might come close to agreeing with this. I think there's some big plot hole in Minority Report that I am forgetting. Since I can't recall it, maybe it wasn't so big.

I love Blade Runner, but it's the quintessential "influential" movie. Much like many of Hitchcock's movies, unless you saw it before it became a source for so many rips, it's difficult to fully appreciate it for what it originally was. If Blade Runner did not exist, the progression of scifi flicks (and maybe scifi in general), would've been very different.

I got somethin' to say. And then I ain't gonna say no more. He took advantage of me. An' if you fine, fancy gentlemen ain't gonna do nothin' about it, then you're just a bunch of lousy, yella, stinkin' cowards, the - the whole bunch of ya, and your fancy airs don't come to nothin'! Your Ma'am'in' and your Miss Mayellarin' - it don't come to nothin', Mr. Finch, not... no.

The movie is great, but I have a hard time showing it to people who haven't read any PKD or haven't seen the movie before. It's somewhat challenging to the viewer the first time through.

I personally think that the best thing about the movie is the soundtrack, and it gets heavy play in my MP3 player. I view is as the godfather for a LOT of Western PC game soundtracks.

Hollywood just needs to stop making movies based on Philip K. Dick stories.
They just **** them up.
What about Scanner Darkly? Looked pretty decent to me judging from the trailer I've seen. Sadly there haven't been any screenings in cinemas here.

Oh and about Blade Runner... yeah, the movie is decent, but the book is awesome.

I'll make sure to watch it again tonight.

Personally I thought the music was extremely lackluster and out of place in many scenes

No, that ending is magnificent. For the theatrical release, Ridley Scott just borrowed some footage from Stanley Kubrick that he hadn't used in The Shining. It doesn't even make sense in the world of the movie.

I saw it last night, it drags on even worse than Blade Runner. Somewhere in there I really felt like it would never end, then it goes and ends with a very simple point that takes like 5 minutes and isn't that amazing.
