Blizzard Planning A Linux Game For 2013

But vetted code doesn't at all solve those problems; users will always click that link and open that PDF, and it's absurd to argue that Acrobat or IE won't be signed. When was the last time you even got a cleverly-renamed .exe in your email?

If you want to argue for a security benefit to the app store model, the improved ability to push updates is a lot more plausible.

Which is why the most important OS security measure is having a proper multi-user environment, which Windows is just recently getting around to implementing in a halfass hacked in way.

You are never going to be able to vet all code running on millions of systems(certainly not without being hugely restrictive and limiting the software market), so you need to be able to limit the damage any piece of malware can cause to a single user's userspace.

As hardware becomes more powerful, you will just create a new user or even a whole new virtual machine for each new piece of software you run, so malware won't be able to do any real damage.

A lot of Linux talk circling around the gaming industry as of late, not something I would have expected say 10 years ago but I welcome it.

Some interesting times we live in in the computer realms. Mobile devices have had an unexpected impact...

Starting to wonder if there was some secret illuminati type shit going down between pc software developers.

I can't really tell if all this Windows 8 hubbub is about the Microsoft Store or the new start screen or what. I mean, on the desktop it's business as usual (although I do miss Aero), the "modern UI" is basically just a full screen start menu where you can access some apps directly.

The only reason you could consider Windows 8 a disaster from a UI point of view is if you were only looking at RT, and how many games were Valve and Blizzard going to release on that.

I can't help but think it's all about the Microsoft Store, especially as Valve has started to sell applications as well as games through Steam. I'm just not quite sure of Blizzard's angle...

It could very well be the case, many developers and publishers are pissed at Microsoft for Wndows 8.

I know you are a joke, but still, this is some dumb right here.

A secret society of game developers? The only ones who really don't like 8 are the ones with storefronts of their own.

More stuff on Linux is always good though, choice is always good. It's probably just the WoW client though.

Probably true. MS is really going to end up regretting the walled garden approach that they are obviously trying to force software companies into. It really does seem like this was way too aggressive a move for MS to pull on PC and it would be remarkable if this is what led to the downfall of MS.

I think Valve making a Steambox is ironically giving Microsoft a reason to actually wall off their garden. If Steamboxes, Originboxes, Battlenetboxes start appearing due to just the possibility of Microsoft creating a walled garden, it might make sense for Microsoft to just wall off the garden and push hard with Xbox/Windows ecosystem and become another Apple.

Windows 8 would have been awesome without metro. Installed start 8 and it is now an upgraded windows 7.

Microsoft what have you done.

Come on man, don't take everything so literally. Is it that much of a stretch to assume that Valve has talked with Blizzard about supporting Linux?

And btw, the joke so far is Windows 8.

If they launch in christmas with this line-up they will win next gen for sure. Would join people from PC market, from MS market and from Sony market. Above all if steambox is more future proof that those top set boxes consoles will become.

I don't get the fuss about the steambox. Valve are unlikely to sell at a loss because they don't really have a platform fee like Sony/MS (although they take a cut of sales..), and initial software will be thin on the ground if its linux.

So won't most people here just continue with their windows PC? If you want it dedicated to steam you can just start up in big picture mode and install no other software on it.

Effectively you can already make your own steambox, and the only extra cost would be the windows license (assuming you want similar hardware performance).

Unless MS reverses the course Win 8 has begun, when 60% of the games I want also have Linux versions I'm jumping the Windows ship so fast I'll leave contrails behind my ears.

IF 2013 is the year Linux gets a major push from the gaming side the SO FUCKING BE IT!
Seriously, Linux is such a good OS. If Photoshop would run on it flawlessly I would totally say goodbye to Windows.

Great news. The sooner I don't have to pay MS for the privilege of using their shovelware OS, the better. Right now, the only thing keeping me on Windows is games.

Steambox is for people who don't want to make their own steambox.

And this why I believe MS will fulfill the walled garden prophecy.

Apart from some strategic moves by Valve, I wonder if the Humble Bundle break downs is responsible for some of these moves. They show Linux users pay the most out of all the platforms.

Never gonna happen, they had enough anti-trust issues as it is.

I think if Microsoft does wall off the garden, we're going to be surprised at how large the garden is. I wouldn't be surprised if in 7 years Microsoft starts manufacturing their own hardware such as tvs and pcs and expand upon smartglass and windows phone and combine them into one ecosystem.

Great news.

I long for the day when PC gaming isn't chained to the company who has actively attempted to kill it.

Talking about that, Windows 8 has a ton of built-in stuff that you needed to download from 3rd parties in previous versions, like a PDF reader and a virtual disk drive. I wonder if they'll get the EU on their toes again, since they fussed up with something as basic as a browser and a media player before.

How do you go from what I said to this?

The biggest deterrent to Microsoft creating a closed ecosystem is companies like Valve creating storefronts on other OSs (in console sized boxes to boot). If enough of these companies start making storefronts on Linux, does Microsoft have much of a reason to not lock down everything like Apple?

Explains how they are easily hacked into.

Well they don't have 8 yet, and it's just as secure as 7 which people are beloved of...

I get that it's "cool" to hate Msoft now on Gaf, but lets at least try and stay vaguely objective. Windows 8 makes some unpopular decisions but on the whole it's solid.

Linux having more games is great though, I would love to make the leap but not because I hate Windows, more that I love Linux.

When PC manufacturers start dropping win licenses for new computers.

Then start claiming windows doomed.

When vista wasn't liked, they offered xp. I have yet to see a PC manufacturer push linux instead of win 8.

do "linux gamers" really exist? who in their right mind installs linux and still expect to play games? i guess they have wine, buy why even bother? just give in and install windows and be done with it.

This isn't surprising, I'm currently preparing to go back to Windows 7 after a Windows 8 "upgrade". Microsoft dun goofed.

Everyone just dual boots.

do you feel that heat, MS? yeah, that's what you get for being driven by profits only and neglecting your consumer and developer base.

Because I don't want to deal with the bloat. I run Mint and gaming is just fine and my system runs buttery smooth.

You've got it backwards. The only reason Valve is building this thing is because it's obvious which direction MS is heading with Windows. Valve is a privately owned company without any real source of capital to make this thing outside of Steam and their own software sales. This is a huge risk for them. And there is no reason for them to do this outside of the very obvious direction that Windows is heading. MS wants that Apple App store money.

I love my Mint. I still dual-boot tho but only on my gaming rig. I believe by the time 9 rolls around i'll be completely MS free.

I still can't believe people use Windows still. After starting with Linux years ago I feel like i'd be giving up an Aston Martin and going back to a Ford Escort if I were to make Windows my only OS.

It's naive to think this is why valve are shittalking windows 8, Windows 8 lets you install anything and you only need to pass testing if you want to be on the windows store. The windows store is exactly like the Mac App Store, Valve is bitching because they'll have competition, so they're going to a platform with no competition.

I find it really hypocritical on Valve's part honestly, have they ever complained about OSX and the Mac app store?
