Blizzard warns WoW Classic realm is staring at a login queue of 10,000

In both North America and Europe

Blizzard is warning World of Warcraft Classic players that, if enrollment holds as it is, one of its realms would face “login queues in excess of 10,000 players ... and possibly much higher than that.”

WoW Classic doesn’t launch until Aug. 27, a week from Tuesday, but last week Blizzard started opening up the game for character name reservations. Based on the activity they’ve seen, “the Herod realm is looking to be massively overpopulated,” community manager Kaivax wrote.

They’re urging players to switch realms — Stalagg has been opened up for this reason. Realms in WoW Classic can accommodate far more players than their 2006 counterparts, such that a population estimate of “Medium” in 2019 “already has more characters on it than even the most crowded realms did back in 2006,” they wrote.

Herod is the overcrowded realm for North America. In Europe, Shazzrah is the one bursting at the seams. Kaivax reposted the same message to players there, asking them to please consider moving to the Gehennas realm.

“Our top priority in planning for WoW Classic’s launch has been ensuring that we are laying the groundwork for strong realm communities that will endure over the months and years to follow,” they wrote, “which is why we’re cautiously opening new servers to meet demand.”

I got my undead warlock named on markirk. Was one of just a few servers not marked as full today.

I have no doubt they will open back up once newer players to normal wow delete their characters in classic wow because they can't level to the cap in 3 hours with epic gear. Course I came from playing everquest at launch till wow came out so even classic wow is still for pussies compared to everquest, especially when that game first started.

If they want it to be authentic they should reintroduce that bug where when you went to loot things sometimes you would get stuck in the looting position and couldn't do anything. Then you had to relog and start at the back of the queue again.

Tipsout had one of the Nostalrius devs yesterday on stream and he said that Blizzard is expecting something around 80% drop-off after launch. Now, obviously, I don't know if he has any sources or if he's talking out of his ass but I wouldn't be surprised if it was true. Since Classic is bundled with a normal subscription and it's going to be the hot new Twitch game for the next few weeks, alongside what you mentioned 80% doesn't seem that far fetched and it's probably why they're holding down on releasing more servers.

When they said they were going back to classic WoW, I didn't think they meant quite this literally.

Hey, people wanted the classic experience, right? Well, here it is folks!

This is how you know a game is successful. When you cannot meet the demand for your product. It's not too much of a bad thing and I think they have learned from the past. (I hope)
It will be the first time logging into WoW since I dropped the game after downing Heroic Garrosh.

End goal: clear Naxx 40, exalted with Brood, etc.

People are really sticking to their initial servers, which is a problem. The newest Pacific PvP realms are fine right now, even low population. People just don't want to give up their names, previous arrangements with friends, etc. I really wish Blizzard would have doubled the number of servers in the first place, that way it would have been more spread out from the start.
