Redditor has kindly provided a TL-DR

  • They reiterate a holiday launch in 2021
  • Hardware sales will either remain flat or grow slightly due to revision.
  • Higher expectations are placed on the Switch Pro (that's what it's referred to in the article) than the PS4 PRO which sold 2M launch window.
  • Launch quarter (Sep-Dec) could reach up to 12M units sold.
  • According to the hardware forecast they speculate that the MSRP could be higher for the revision upwards of 20%
  • Zelda is a strong launch game candidate with several round out titles to accompany it.
  • The performance of this revision is expected to be in line with the PS4 PRO and XBOX One X.

Wasn’t the Xbox One X 6tf up from the Xbox One’s 1.4tf or some shit? No chance the Switch XL or whatever this ends up being has even a 2x performance boost.

I'm not sure if that is marketing speak. Like PS4 Pro had a 2x more powerful GPU but the game performance wasn't twice as good. I read it as the Switch was 1TF? So the increase will be a Switch Pro with probably 2-3TF, not sure if that's possible in a mobile form factor and I would hasten it would probably be only third parties that really require it.

I'm all in if is has much more power than the Switch. Shouldn't be too hard i heard the Switch is based on 2014's smartphone A57 architecture.

A 4/5 teraflops Super Switch capable of running next gen games at 1080 (upscaled) would be another home run for Nintendo.
I don't believe that's possible though. The XSS is 4tf and look at its size. Nintendo can probably squeeze 1.5-2tf in a 7 inch portable.

I'm not sure I'll go with the dock having extra sauce either. We speculated that before the Switch's launch and it never happened.

There is no chance that it has the same performance as an Ps4 pro or Xbox one x ...they even both have different performance (XOX 40% more than PS4) ...even if they are talking about the increase Xbox one > One X/Ps4 > PS4 Pro that makes even less sense as the differential between the green pair is much bigger than the blue pair.. utter dog shit of an news article.

Nintendo always disappoint performance wise ...but make great games, don't get your hopes up

The jump can be great or small.

A jump from;
PS4 to PS4 Pro is "only" 2.28 times (Switch 393Gflops to Switch Pro 896Gflops)
XB1 to XB1X is "around" 4.28-4.58 times (Switch 393Gflops to Switch Pro 1680-1800Gflops/1.68-1.8Tflops) **

** Corrected the Xbox one info. Based on XB1 = 1.31Tflops, XB1S = 1.4Tflops

There's no way they are saying performance in line with a PS4 Pro or XB1X, right? Maybe in a console/super dock form-factor, but as a hybrid that would be not just a next gen leap but an impressive one.

I'm choosing to read this as "a jump in power in line with the Pro and X," so a 2-6x jump, which would still be great for a refresh. Or I guess they could be going purely off of pixel count if this thing actually does play Switch-level games at 4K.

I think the Switch is closer to .45TF when docked. The only way it approaches 1TF is if you're calculating what its GPU can do at full speed and half precision. Of course, take that with a grain of salt too. I have only the shallowest understanding of what those terms even mean, and I could easily be misremembering. Lol. Still, I find it really hard to believe the Switch's GPU is ~83% of a 1.2 TF XB1, whereas ~33% (again, while docked) feels right on the money.

EDIT: Looks like my numbers were off, as predicted. Sub .4 TF according to Mithos, whom I am absolutely ready to believe over my own memory.

People, they aren't saying it's going to perform like a PS4 Pro. They're saying the jump from Switch to Switch Pro will be akin to the jump from PS4 to PS4 Pro.

Anyway, this thing better have the software to back it up. I was one of the idiots who bought a New 3DS. Never again, this needs to be seriously impressive.

Unless they throw a dedicated gpu on the dock, with state of the art mobile gpus at most they’re looking at a x4-x5 uplift... which is like a Xbox one to Xbox one X jump.

I think Switch Pro / Switch 2 will start going the route people wished Wii U to go: dock can run games and/or augment the standalone Switch Pro handheld.

I thought the story about a revised model this year (small spec bump) and a true successor in the not too distant future was more likely..

That would be sweet... but given Nintendo's model of making money on hardware I would imagine it would be at a price most would feel physically sick at ...for much worse performance than the XSX/PS5.

I think Nintendo is also seeking to raise the ASP for their HW (... and people will buy it).

Imagine them being able to then update the dock only few years down the line. Yeah, that is kind of re-introducing two lines of HW in a way.

A 2x jump should be easily achievable with a new SoC. Even in docked mode, the Switch is ~1/3 as a powerful as an Xbox One, and the latest integrated Intel graphics can deliver performance between an Xbox One and PS4. Base Xbox One performance would be a reasonable expectation for what is possible.

By “performance” they’re not talking teraflops. Super Switch will use DLSS to run PS4-quality games at upscaled 4K. Hence “PS4 pro or One X performance”. It’ll likely be little more than 2TF

Unless they mean that performance is 4 to 6 times better than orginal switch there's no way they put 4-6TF box into mobile format

Would also rely on the handheld having a good cpu/ram to make the most of the dock upgrade. I like the idea but in reality were probably just going to get a Switch with a 2018 spec chipset instead of a 2014 one.... after watching the Matrix, while waiting for the sequels I read loads of awesome fan theories and everyone turned out to be so much better than the shitty sequels.

It’s all about performance for me. If it can run BOTW2 at a solid, consistent framerate then I might be interested. If not, I’ll just watch clips of the best bits and save my money

Direct comparisons with home consoles don't make much sense in this case because this new Switch will likely use DLSS which means it could potentially produce PS4 Pro level performance despite not being remotely in the same technical ballpark.

Ok, let's assume this is true (just for fun).

Due to covid, they will probably delay its launch to the first half of 2022 alongside Breath of the Wild 2.

Holy shit candles it's happening a new switch that targets stable 30fps in higher end games.

As much as I want it, there's been no evidence that any new or future Switch revision will use DLSS. They have found code for a new chip in drivers but that seems to be just a slight revision of the current one. The other issue is that the tensor cores used for this are only found on higher end Nvidia cards so DLSS performance on lower spec hardware is a complete unknown, might not even be currently possible. So I wouldn't say that it is likely... other than us all whishing it would happen!

Is this possible in a portable format (for a reasonable price)?

Yeah right... I will be surprised if it reaches base Xbox One / PS4 levels.

People getting wrong end of stick....by performance I think sales performance is meant.

Switch is a 700GFLOPS on desktop mode, and almost half on portable mode. And those numbers really are using 16 bit calculations, so the really to compare with other consoles you would get even the half of that.

No way they get 2-3TFLOPS.

Technically there's no evidence for this Switch Pro existing either but if you take Bloomberg's reports seriously then it's reasonable speculation. The Bloomberg reporter has mentioned multiple times that this new Switch would be capable of 4K graphics and he specifically mentioned Nintendo asked their development partners to make their games 4K ready. Native 4K is out of the question because of the form factor and battery concerns so it leaves DLSS which makes perfect sense for both Nintendo and Nvidia.
