Brand new Xbox One will not even boot if you dont have internet connection

I was specifically talking to you there, not the nebulus uninformed consumer.

And yes, I do read the boxes of things I buy. I know not everyone does, believe me, I've accepted enough returns from ignorant impulse buyers. But I do and I'm saying you should, especially for the Xbox One given how topsy turvy it's been.

And also yes, there will be backlash. As I said on the first page:

Ah, so you actually deal with customers on a regular basis. I didn't realise that. Perhaps (and I'm not having a go) you are a little less likely to agree from a consumers perspective because you take your position of knowledge for granted. This is probably why it lead to the sentence that I took issue with.

I can see we are more or less on the same page though, so I'm sorry I automatically associated you with those in this thread who just want to push the blame onto the consumer instead of considering the problem this will inevitably cause.

Just because it's not necessarily permanent, everything is suddenly fine now? I also don't see how you can correlate the people in those situations with people who don't have HDTVs.

HDMI cords, sir...

If everybody doesn't have internet, bet your ass everybody doesn't have a HDTV.

Last time I checked, PS4 was in a similar, if not the same, boat. So no next-gen?

Nope, check again.

Well yeah, but why specifically those people outlined in the post. I'd think people having to wait for their ISP to switch aren't necessarily likely to still have CRT more than the average person, nor someone who doesn't know the password to their router.

Right. They will be livid... so what? Consoles is made and boxed. You want microsoft and all the retailers to go into every box and update them manually? Millions of consoles? REALLY?!
No, I want Microsoft to give options like updating from a disc or an external storage device

Why the fuck won't launch games come with this update?

That first page is a shame of unnecessary posts to be honest, they add nothing and did nothing to a proper discussion fellow GAFfers.

On, topic, I think it's a shame you still need to have an internet connection. Not to me, the informed consumer but I can see some concern to the less informed people.

Let's say some parents want to offer a Xbox One for the upcoming Holiday season and they get one. Then, they grab the gift and go on a trip so they can spend the Christmas eve at grandma's house. Because the kid is eager to try it before it arrives home, he will be surprised to see he can't play the news games and will express concern/sadness to the (not informed) parents which may or not get upset by such situation. This may be a minor thing but it could be a hassle for some. Aside of such small things like this I don't see many more that could lead this to be a major problem.

Like I said, for me it wouldn't be a problem since I know the facts and my Internet is ready every time.

Its requirement too, I imagine these pre-teens with no internet connection wont have one of those either. They are going to be livid when they try to jam the hdmi cable into their rca jacks in the back of their crt televisions.
I imagine somewhere else some family is going to go ape shit because it requires electricity too.

Not for any of those people who live there.

Also, when did this thread become about PS4?

How? The PS4 doesn't even have the function to play Blu-Ray movies without an update.

Really? This thread is harking on the Xbone and you guys talk negatively about it, so what is your next console of choice? Wii U lol? A competitor will obviously be brought into the argument because it shows how the subject isn't necessarily wrong in requiring a internet connection for an necessary update.

I thought this was well known....?

This isn't a dismissal of the 'problem' entirely, but I'd reckon that most people buying a £500 console at release have some form on internet connection ;)

Didn't they have a ridiculously high amount of people not connect their 360s to the internet?

I predict, instead, that mom and dad get mad because the Xbox is "broken" and return it to the store, only to replace it with another "broken" Xbox.

Right, its not happening. Box is in the box. So what is this thread for besides getting angry about something nobody can do anything about. Some people are gonna be pissed but the percentage of people is completely insignificant. Even every single person who's affected in this scenario returned their xbox one, they will get sold right away and MS will not have even felt it. In short it doesn't matter.

PS4 plays games out of the box, period.

Not supporting non-HD TV's sucks too, but that actually is a financial issue, unlike the internet issue which cannot be solved with $'s but I agree the HDTV thing sucks.

Of course and I would like to see anyone who is actively involved in this fear-mongering to come forward and say they have no internet connection and who have actually pre-ordered or plan to buy an XBox One on launch day.

I said that hose people in that area aren't going to be able to use Xbox One for next gen any time soon. PS4 they can just go somewhere and DL the patch on a flash drive, which you keep denying even when people showed you the section in the FAQ.

So now the thread is about Wii U. Got it.

Oh dear. I don't think many people 'care' about 'their' Xbox One not working but they are hoping Microsoft has a back-up or else the doom and gloom we are predicting might very well pale in comparison to the actual fall out. You can't defend this type of problem going into the Christmas season and just hope no one catches wind of this.

Microsoft is absurd if they don't have a back-up plan ready and everyone is absurd for pretending this isn't the biggest mass media issue that will come out of this launch.

You can only answer questions about Mario on the Playstation so many times before taking knowledge for granted is beaten out of you :P

on an internet message board? think about it.

No it doesn't.

We're talking about limited functionality in regards to having to update than playing games right out the box.

And what's the point? How can you even game this gen without internet? Clearly gen 10 will be here and there will still be no-internet pacifists.

There will be that one person to bitch about the Steambox requiring internet because that's what I feel like its in this thread.

You buy an Xbone, you need internet. Simple. If that's an issue, the highly hyped PS4 can play games right out the box(from what others quoted to me). Again simple, no need to gripe about it on an Internet forum where all of us obviously have internet. This is so damn bizarre.

Limited functionality versus no functionality

Got it

I appreciate you doubling down on this, it's amusing.

You haven't checked in a while then. The update can be downloaded onto a USB stick from lets say the library and uploaded or you can phone Sony and ha e a disk sent out. The PS4 will still play games without the update as well so no it's not the same boat at all

You mean when the 360 was released? To be honest I didn't knew about such problem because I was still having fun with the PS2 back when it was released but if such thing repeats, then yes, I can see them raising awareness and switch for the other similar console, PS4 or get another Xbox One since they might believe the one they have might be broken.

I believe it might be too late to get this software on the launch discs such Forza and Ryse but it could be a very useful thing. I believe they did this in the past, with the 360 for those without a proper Internet Connection.

The majority of this generations consoles have never been online.

So I take it you've worked out that you're wrong and don't need enlightening anymore?

So fuck people that aren't me then?

Sorry for trying to help MS notice this is an issue so they can fix it for their own good, I'll just sit back and watch the brand burn then, who needs fair competition anyways.

So I take it you've worked out that you're wrong and don't need enlightening anymore?

Lol you're kidding me right? I was talking about console limitations. Yes I worked out and admit I was wrong about gameplay functionality out of the box, internet warrior.

wasn´t the iphone also unable to be used without a internet connection?

if you buy a one and dont have any internet, i´d say its your own fault.
spending 500€+ without knowing what the device needs is pretty stupid...
for me 500€ is a lot of money, so before i buy one i get better informed about the thing.

i wonder how some people are able to breath without a tutorial or such..
its like buying a sportscar but not knowing that you have to put a lot of gas in the tank to drive...

So XBox1 requires a patch. Day 1 patches are sadly becoming a fact of life. Potential problem MS will have is their recent marketing push stating the Internet is NOT required to use the system. This has been marketed quite heavily to mitigate the bad press they had over their original announcement of constant Internet connections. They may have quietly mentioned the need for an initial connection to set things up, but I can see people not picking this up as it has not been loudly announced.

So, for those people who do not have Internet or those people who have very slow Internet . . . Are people able to download this patch via a computer, place on a USB stick and then update said XBox1?

Huh? I use an iPad without the internet. What the fuck are you talking about.

I meant for activation, but I just realised that it's only 3G models that do.

Taking an iPad out if the box without an Internet connection does make it next to useless though.
Cool your mouth

Kind of crazy that they haven't put the day 1 update on game discs, to be honest. But we've known for ages that it would need an update day 1.
