How disappointing to see these topics become so hostile. I came to this site to get away from people who knee-jerk shout "pedo" at games. Am I really seeing comments in here arguing that playing Neptunia games makes you a child predator? So, what? Can I been charged for having a shelf full of Neptunia games?

We desperately need journalism that can sort these issues out (and not throw fuel on the fire) because it's clear leaving things up to internet discussions won't work. There's too much ignorance and anger that you wouldn't have if you had to debate face to face. I doubt anyone would come out looking good if they told me to my face I'm a child predator for playing Teen rated Japanese games I can buy on Amazon.
This exactly. I love the Neptunia series. Am a grown as adult who has been married for over 15 years and definitely don't appreciate being attacked by people who are just batshit crazy. If I wanted such closed mindedness I would have stuck to ERA but always had a soft spot in my heart for GAF and never enjoyed the exodus, but seeing fucking grown? adults screaming pedo and nonsense is literally sickening to me. If you feel that strongly about it, maybe you need to seek some sort of professional help to deal with your shit? At the end of the day it's a video game series that is actually fun.

Irrelevant to what I said.

Just because there are old girls that looks like children (or try to look like children) didn’t mean you can use children in a sexual way in any type of media that have the goal of enjoyment and not shock via drama to make you think that is wrong.

They are animation based in humans.

The character looks exactly like a children.
I agree that children should not be sexualized, but good thing that the characters are not children, nor do they look like children. Neptune has the same body type as many adult japanese women - which was the point I was making. However, it is easier to just to scream "PEDO!" and refuse any and all discussion because you fail to understand that there are plenty of petite people in the world and that confuses you.

29 year olds still in school wearing school outfits and carrying books?
Funny thing, there does exist a concept such as "cosplay" and "modeling".

But it is really fine to be attracted by kids? I suppose when I look to a kid I remember of my own children... I have no desire or attraction for my children in that way.

And worst if I know somebody with that attraction to my own children it is possible I will try to kill him.
When I see kids, I simply see people growing up..... school, friends, learning. And hopefully when they are an adult things are going well.

Last thing I want to see are kids being exploited since there's nothing they can really do, but tell an adult and hope they help. Considering how any abused kids there are, lots of them are too afraid, which makes it worse.

If someone wants to get jollies with sex, go watch some adult porn or hit a strip club. The world doesn't need people staring at a tv screen with their tongues sticking out looking at at a 12 year old's panties (whether it's drawings or worst... real life molestation).

Put it this way, if you played games and people knew about it, what would they think?

1. I play shooters like Call of Duty for the kick ass military competition
2. I play sports games like FIFA for competition or having fun playing as my favourite team
3. I play anime games with young girls in school outfits hoping they shove their crotches right into the screen

Pretty sure everyone will look at you like a crackpot playing #3.

Kill? That's quite an extreme leap. How did you get from the art in Neptinia games to your own children?

You have already gone on record in the past stating you hate anime/cartoon games. It feels more like you just have a beef and are projecting your own failings/misgivings on everyone else who enjoys those types of games by baselessly accusing them of pedophilia, or insinuating that they are such.

I obviously play shooters to learn how to kill real people and that is how people look at me when I play Counter-Strike. They all think I'm the next Anders Behring Breivik. Just like I'm a pedo in your eyes for playing anime games.

You're arguing in bad faith.

So it's the stereotypical outdoor bath scene in tons of anime. For me personally I do wish that anime only used 18 and above characters in ecchi stuff. If you would go to jail for seeing the real life movie version don't make an animated version of it.

I really wish they would too. I like Neptunia when she's transformed into Purple Heart! Adult features mean a lot more to me. Vert is my favorite character in the whole dang series and she's all about being comfortable with her developed body.

Too many people try to take offense to the art, though. Some argue all anime art looks underage, some say all cartoon art is for kids no matter what. Some look at a 25 year old character and interpret them as 12, even if it's not in an anime art style. I think plenty of people won't get the idea behind ecchi to begin with because they associate "playful" or "cute" with child. Being agaisnt sexy content is the in thing to do these days so if you work around that art like I do it's a never ending fight from every possible angle.

Yeah it looks like I posted it on the wrong forum, because I woke up to some idiotic shit.
It's anything than what this topic is about - censorship or the lackthereof or to be or a game called Neptunia.
So many things to discuss, but nope we got some garbage from another place polluting this forum again...great.

You can't completely blame folks for associating it that way since I do think that Japanese folk try to associate it with underage girls. Sexualizing high school girls in manga and anime is the norm in Japan. I believe they even use to have real high school girls pose in bathing suits on manga covers. They idolize the highschool age group too much.

There's a huge difference between high school ages and pedophilia, though. High school is a time where people do often learn about their sexuality and it's reflected in our entertainment, too. There is a bit of a culture difference as we tend to glorify sexual exploration in college while it seems to me it's closer to High School in Japan. I don't think people are looking at this stuff reasonably, though, especially if the difference can be one year or so, like 17-18. There's no way anyone can say this topic is reasonable. This clearly has to be discussed in a less destructive manner. I'm not okay with talk about killing people in these topics, you now?

Yes that hill. Sony isn't making it illegal for the game to come out uncensored world-wide and on all platforms. Just their platform. It's okay that you don't like that "form" of censorship, but I'd rather give corporations that "right" to censor what they want to censor on THEIR console.
I think it’s more about the principle and inconsistencies with Sony’s censorship policy. They will allow a Western game with full frontal nudity and sex scenes to be released uncensored, yet censor suggestive or racy scenes with cartoon/anime women that aren’t even showing nudity. Yeah, I know these anime characters are usually depicted as being quite young, but it’s still a little peculiar to me.

I think this discussion would go a lot farther if we didn't accuse people of being pedophiles.

Like, I think To Love Ru is brilliant, but it is filled with things that make me uncomfortable. For instance, there's certainly incestual undertones to the work (the book is constantly trying to get Rito and his sister in sexual situations) and there's times when characters are de-aged to 8 or 9 and shown naked. But there's a line the work doesn't cross. It is never quite porn, never quite incest, and never quite children.

(And that's part of what I appreciate about it: the way it playfully dances around the line without crossing it. Porn is easy. Abstinence is easy. Restraint is difficult. Knowing where the line is and pushing it just so far without going too far is an impossible balancing act that To Love Ru is a masterclass in. More works could learn from its example, and maybe something like Benny Hill, where the line is funny, but crossing it would be crass).

Now, I adore quite a bit about the series, but I don't like these things. But I've accepted that, being basically a fan service book, it is going to have fan service for things I'm not into. Japan has an appreciation for things that we, in the West, consider taboo, and To Love Ru isn't hitting any bullet points that aren't more predominant elsewhere. It's kind of a fan service greatest hits. There's really something for everyone.

When I hit a part that isn't working for me, I just keep moving. I don't dwell on it, thinking about all the dirty perverts that are probably enjoying it. It is, after all, a comic book. The people depicted in it aren't real. Nobody is being exploited except the audience. It's fantasy, and someone else's fantasy isn't my problem unless it is harming someone else, and that's not the case here. So, I just keep moving. The next page will have something I do like.

The argument that I'm for these things just because To Love Ru exists and I like it would imply that I like everything about it all the time. I like a lot of it most of the time, but I can read things I disagree with without blaming it for existing. I wish more people could. Unless somebody can show me irrefutable proof that To Love Ru is harming people, then I'm going to just keep turning the page rather than burning it.

That one year difference could possibly send you to jail in real life though. I'm still kinda mixed on the censorship portion . As someone that has over 1,000 anime dvds I'm not too bothered by the switch version but I can understand why they would want to censor it for the U.S. these days. And it is easier to understand why western stuff doesn't get censored so much since they tend to make their sexy characters look older.

You're not going to prison for a Japanese video game. You go to prison if you shoot someone in real life but you don't if you shoot them in a game. This kind of demonization of art is pretty scary to me.

It's a significant issue for me as I work in erotic art, this year has been a nightmare. I think people forget that artists actually work on these games. The US censoring sexual content now is a huge issue for people like me. I'm already screwed off of Tumblr and Google Play seems to be pulling art sites down, like ArtStation. It's an issue that shouldn't be taken lightly. I draw western style art for the most part and I'm still threatened with censorship because there is a lot more action being taken than just Sony with Japanese games. Advertisers wanting squeaky clean sites to advertise on seems to be a piece of that puzzle.

Sorry if I misinterpret. Reading all the posts calling people predaters makes it hard to tell what we are discussing, ha ha.
It's quite the norm to hear the predator/pedo type of thing concerning anime on a forum that isn't dedicated to anime/manga. I do think anime goes too far at few times but i've become mostly desensitized to it.

That should not be a norm. Assumptions like this are obviously getting worse. From a personal viewpoint, I use to laugh off people who insulted me before, now I worry they will get my art banned from sites by making extreme accusations. That is not good thing at all. No one should accept this level of ignorance as a norm.

It's been like this for more than a decade. The only real difference now are folks using twitter and facebook when they do it.

Baseless accusations don't seem to be something that are acceptable here, given how one of the members has been warned and presumably replay banned. Report those that try to insinuate such as they will more than likely be dealt with.

To remain on topic, I am quite curious to see whether they will go so far as to uncover Sony's potential involvement in this. I imagine they will probably provide more details given the impending 2019 release in the West for the sake of avoiding too much controversy, but we'll see.

You aren’t a pedophile for playing these games, just as you aren’t a scumbag for playing GTAV.

If characters are of age, then I don’t care.
Me personally I’m not interested in Neptunia but some of these arguments that are for censorship are very weak and feel more like it’s very personal.

The character looks exactly like a children.
You first have to prove that these games that you refer to solely have the goal of enjoyment. In addition, games that do exclusively have that goal are rated accordingly by ESRB and CERO, i.e. they get an AO or Z rating.

You also need to take into the account how certain artstyles inherently have thicker walls between fiction and reality. The realistic style akin to The Last of Us, for example, has a significantly thinner, less opaque wall due to the fact that one of ND's major goals of that series is to achieve the sense of realism. However, if we are to look at the anime style of Neptunia or Senran Kagura, it doesn't take even one millisecond to realize that this is not real.

And let's say that some people who do play these types of games are predators. I'd rather they fulfill their fantasies on video games than on real people. It's similar to how violent video games gives gamers an outlet for their aggression without actually hurting others.

I use the "double standard standard". That is, if something works one way but not the opposite, then it is not the thing itself you are taking issue with. For instance, if you are okay with The Last of Us having an attempted rape as a way to create dramatic tension through trauma, but not okay with a game promoting rape as a cool thing to do on a groovy Friday night, then it is not rape that you take issue with - it is the message. Specifically, you are okay with the message "rape is bad", but not the message "rape is good". In other words, context is everything.

But then in these discussions, context seems to be completely irrelevant to the discussion. Sexy is always bad. There is no distinction between when "sexy is good" and when "sexy if bad". Almost universally, the people who are in favor of censorship say something like, "If you want to see that stuff, go watch porn". That's their context. Sexy is only good when it is isolated away from everything else. When it is ONLY sexy. It's like there is a box with "sexy" written on the outside, and you can visit it if you want, but nothing inside should ever be spotted outside. It's Pandora's Sexy Box.

Characters look too young? Goes in the box. Characters don't look too young? Goes in the box. Characters going to pound town? In the box. Characters simply naked? In the box. Characters wearing bikinis? The box. Because it is all in the box, people start to think too highly of themselves. They may visit the box here and there for a good wank, but they don't live in the box. Pandora's Sexy is still contained in the box. There's a time and a place for the sexy box, and it's private time.

Then people get confused and think everything that is in that one singular box must all belong to one singular classification, and that's how you get people saying that Bayonetta is somehow harmful to women. Everything in the box must be harmful to women because there's just one box. It's not a spectrum, it's not a smorgasbord. It's all one thing, and it all gets one label. "Wrong". And Sony has now gotten to the point where their big box of "sexy" now has "Wrong" labels stickied all over it.

I want to know more about this Pandoras Sexy Box you speak of. Sounds like good times :)
I'd like there to be good times outside of the box too. But for some reason, a bunch of people seem determined to make sure that never happens. I honestly don't understand why.

Name me an anime that actually has that purpose. If you manage to find that show, do you know what will be my initial reaction? I'll be laughing my ass off because of the absurdity. In this hypothetical scenario, I will have been entertained by the comedic value of this hypothetical show, not be aroused by it.
Even if the purpose was not there, I remember in the case of Sailor Moon, some groups were annoyed by the transformation scenes and character relationships. One reason series was edited in the US version.
Apparently all people grew with Dragon Ball and forget the magical girl genre even exists
Neptunia is a series heavily relying on parody and anime and video game references, so to properly judge or even censor it you have to know one two things. I do not see Sony even caring to know.

Also watch around 0.35 and 1.11-13, similar parody show

I'm not pro-censorship. But I do understand why Sony would censor some of these games and I'm not mad about it. Ultimately it'll be best if they didn't censor the games as their competitors aren't and this is making Sony look worse. Nobody was really asking for this censorship either.

But it is up to Sony if they want to allow it or not on their console.

I do not disagree with you, though Sony has this weird (and also hypocritical) stance where they have one foot through the "Let the parents control what their children play" door and the other foot through the "It's up to us to 'protect the children' " door. It's because of this contradiction that the Playstation channel's parental controls video got a lot of flak.

They’re both censored, why is Sony the only one being called out for it?
Because in the past Sony had acceptable censorship in Nep games. (little to no mist) Now there are either lights outta nowhere and mist up the ass.
