Brian Michael Bendis has announced he is leaving the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book title, but Marvel already has a new creative team in place to succeed him. Bendis, who also writes Spider-Man, Jessica Jones, Infamous Iron Man and Invincible Iron Man, has written the series since February 2013.

"It was a couple of things," Bendis explained to ComicBook of his decision to leave the title. "Number one, I had an end story that I've been building to and it's time to unleash it. Number two, there were other projects offered to me that I was like, 'Oh, I do want to do that!' and something has to go. Even I have a bandwidth cap, even though no one in Marvel thinks that I do."

Though he's leaving, Bendis is taking the opportunity to work with the incoming creative team (whose names Bendis won't reveal, but who he says he knows "very well") and set up their run in his finale.

"It was like, 'Well, I could leave Guardians, and I could leave Guardians the month the movie comes out or the month before, giving the new creative team the opportunity to really blow the roof off the place,' and that's cool," Bendis explained. "The new creative team is one that I like. I want to tee them up in a good way, but at the same time, I really want to land my ending in a big way."

This will be a day long remembered.

This needs to be standard. Transitions between teams can be jarring as fuck

Didn't read the comic but I've heard nothing but awful things about it, so I'm guessing there's a lot of happy people right now.

With him off Guardians and X-Men I've got zero complaints. Miles, Jessica Jones, and Iron Man - good Bendis books.

Just don't give him any more events. Please.

In my dreams, Abnett & Lanning would return to bring the series back to greatness, but they're done with each other professionally, so I know it's a non-starter.

finally. I usually don't mind Bendis, but he clearly had no idea what he was doing with this series.

wasted potential, waste of good art and waste of good characters that blew up because of a successful movie. best wishes to the new creative team.

Bendis works best when he has one hero to focus his creative energies on. One person to make pithy and stuff.

He can't stretch it out to a team book, plus his action has always been sub-par and given that Guardians is an action heavy team book, it was just never a fit in the first place.

I get he's their A-lister and his New Avengers run sold (despite my tepid thoughts on it), but you don't need the guy on every flagship run.

Bendis has two issues. Team books and sticking the landing.

Yep, dude needs someone else to get his endings for him.

His dialogue though, best in the biz.

His Uncanny run was great so it was shit that he went from that to just a boring as hell Guardians book. So much you can do with that team and everything he did was so bland.

I can't really think of a Marvel team book I've enjoyed this year and even their solo titles have left much to be desired. Post Secret Wars has largely been a miss for me. Hopefully the X books do something for me in 2017.

It's nuts, occasionally he can actually do a pretty good team book, like Uncanny, which I avoided like the plague because his All New X-men book was such trash, but most times, he just sucks at them.

Thank God he's done with this series. I remember deciding to check it out when I was done with the Abnett and Lanning run which I came to late, and it felt like a completely different book. Hell the characters themselves didn't even seem the same. I actually thought that Gamorra had amnesia for a while, until I realized that no, Bendis just couldn't write her for shit.

Bendis has it in him to write 1 - 2 good books at a time. JJ is pretty good, so I'll keep on it. Honestly though, his best days are a decade gone at this point.

As for good team books, Cullen Bunn's Uncanny X-men isn't bad. It's not perfect, but it's a damn sight better than Lemire's Extraordianary, or (shudder) Hopeless' All-New. The Inhumans team books are also definitively mediocre.

I am a big fan of the DnA run and am always sour on Bendis' run.

Mantis
Phyla-Vell
Cosmo
Vance Astro/Major Victory
Moondragon
Jack Flag
Adam Warlock
Bug

I missed them all though I knew even if Bendis kept them around he would never know how to write them with their own personality.

The question now is, who will replace him? Shame Rick Remender left to do his own stuff. I would have loved to see him headlining GotG.

Ehhh. Only feels that way when you first start to read him.

You soon realize that most of his characters across all his books have one voice: his.

Which is why it works when he's writing solo's. I like his punch-up work.

It falls apart when he needs to stretch it across a team.

Bendis is good. I just don't like his events as other's has said. Too much going on with other books and the tie-ins that just ruins everything. When he is self contained, i'm all for it. Like on a couple of books, not all of them.

I also feel that Jonathon Hickman is heading in that same direction or has rather and that sucked too.

Man, I wish he'd write more than two issues of Powers a fucking year instead of taking on more god damned Marvel books.

Don't get me wrong, I love his Alias/Jessica Jones stuff and some of his other Marvel runs but I read Powers and that shit is So. Fucking. Slow.

Dang came to say this. Love remenders stuff.

I'm reading marvel unlimited, and don't really like bendis run on guardians. He so hit and miss for me. Loved his ultimate spider man. Remember his ultron run? So bad.

What about al Ewing? His current run of the ultimates is pretty awesome.

I don't really know who the hot writers are in Marvel, I've been reading through Unlimited for a few years now so I'm behind the curve.

Lemire maybe?

He crushed my hopes for a great, modern Ultron book.

Haven't read Ultimates yet but I've heard good things about it. If Ewing is able elevate the material, and able to carry more books at the same time without a quality loss, then I guess I'm for it.

i liked ultimate spiderman
Ultimate Spider-Man, Powers, Alias (Aka Jessica Jones), Fortune & Glory and his work on Daredevil among quite a few other things are all fucking amazing.

I even enjoyed his Secret War run and some other stuff that people absolutely fucking hate but his Guardians stuff couldn't be more boring so i am glad he's off it and i hope he goes and makes something great. But this is GAF, there is a hate train for everyone and everything.

Oh maybe that wrestler who wrote the drax solo comics.
I would love to have more CM Punk Drax books those were fantastic.

Also people who have some weird vile hatred towards Max Landis should go read American Alien its the best Superman book in a long, long time.

Either he's really overselling the current arc or he's there for another 8-10 issues.
FWIW, the book had its best arc recently, that thing where they killed Badoons.

Bendis has two issues. Team books and sticking the landing.
New Avengers volume 1 manages both though, but yeah, it's the exception.
