Bundles of Awesome - The Official WiiWare Discussion Thread

Let me be very clear--throughout this entire post.

I love Pokemon. It's my favorite series, and has produced many of my favorite games. I do think the single-player is rather droll, only ever hitting the heights of C+ or B- territory, but multiplayer in the mainline games is where it's at. Past or present, I've owned Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, another copy of Gold, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, Sapphire, Fire Red, Leaf Green, Emerald, another copy of Emerald, Diamond, a Japanese copy of Diamond (and I don't know Japanese), Pearl, and a Japanese copy of Pearl.

With the exception of Gold/Silver/Crystal, I always manage to pull at least 550 hours from every Pokemon generation. Not all of those are active hours, of course; I would say that at least 40% of them are spent hatching eggs while browsing GAF, talking on the phone, or any number of other things. My boxes inevitably reach a point of overflow, and that point almost always signals the exact time that I'll stop playing; I don't want to breed more eggs if I can only hatch 20 or 30 in one shot. For this reason, extra storage slots are always a plus to me.

I don't only buy the main games. I've owned Battle Revolution, Colosseum, Mystery Dungeon Blue, Pinball, Ranger, Snap, Stadium, Stadium 2, Trading Card Game (GBC), Trozei, and XD. I didn't particularly love Ranger; I'll buy its sequel anyway purely because I saw room for improvement. I didn't particularly love Colosseum; I still played through it three times to hoard more Suicune. I'll be getting Platinum day one, and I consistently hold out hope for a DS Pokemon Pinball and a Wii Pokemon Snap, along with another Colosseum or XD-style home console RPG.

I've been a series critic; for example, Diamond/Pearl have ludicrously slow gameplay compared to their GBA counterparts, and Pokemon Battle Revolution is an outright horrible waste of money. And I've highlighted a number of ways that the games could improve without radically changing any one aspect to a degree that might alienate the fanbase. It makes sense to critique something you love, right? Constructively, in hopes that it would improve.

But this post will not be a critique.

My Pokemon Ranch is the dirtiest of shovelware that Nintendo has yet produced or published. I am not talking about a "Yoshi's Story" level of shovelware. I am not talking about a "Pinball" level of shovelware. I am not talking about a "Virtual Boy" level of shovelware. I am talking about something new, unprecedented, and unparalleled, very nearly industry-wide. I am saying that if ever there were a case to be made against intelligent design and natural selection in one fell swoop, then I would say that the conception, creation, approval, and publication of My Pokemon Ranch rank among the strongest imaginable evidence.

I bought under the assumption that, given my understanding of what constitutes a fundamental human intelligence--what functions of thought exist that not even the mentally retarded or brain-damaged lack, never mind game planners ostensibly skilled enough to be hired and paid in this industry (or, if it's not their fault, then the marketers or other higher-ups who forced various design decisions on them)--nobody could screw up this title's one selling point, which is 1000 extra storage slots. Just to be clear that calling storage this title's one selling point is not my own unique and personalized hyperbole, Nintendo added a screen before the final purchase, warning prospective buyers that they can't use My Pokemon Ranch to battle or trade. This is good.

What's not good is that they provide only two of the four reasons that, much like the internal memory of Wii itself, My Pokemon Ranch doesn't even suffice as a storage utility. To begin, here's what they caution players about:

1) Any Pokemon which is deposited to My Pokemon Ranch cannot be withdrawn to a DS card other than the card which originally deposited it.
2) Any Pokemon which is deposited to My Pokemon Ranch cannot be withdrawn to the DS card it was deposited from if that DS card has started (and saved) a new game.

Exactly which of these two oversights may be called more asinine is nothing I can decide. Putting aside fanatics like myself for a moment, there are two significant reasons that a person would buy a Wii storage utility for a DS Pokemon game. The first reason is that she owns two or more copies of Pokemon but only has one working DS, in which case she can't pool the items and teams of her two files. If she wanted to do so, My Pokemon Ranch would not allow it. The second reason is that she has one copy of Pokemon and wants to start a new file without losing her old Pokemon. If she wanted to do so, My Pokemon Ranch would not allow that either.

I have four copies of Pokemon and two DSes, and I don't want to restart any of them since I don't care about the single-player. (And even if I did, technically I've already played through Pokemon D/P four times.) Consequently, neither of the above mistakes in My Pokemon Ranch apply to me--which explains why I would press on and buy it anyway, yes? Actually, no. I still want the option to start a new file if I feel like it, and transferring Pokemon between my two English copies without setting up trades between my two DSes would have been an enormous selling point. Nonetheless, after a few minutes of hesitation I went forward and bought it because of two remaining assumptions that ended up not holding water. And here is why they didn't hold water--here are the things which they don't caution players about:

3) You can't instantly store 1000 Pokemon. On the first day you can only store a total of 20--which on your end is only 14, since an in-game Pokemon ranch girl has already put in six (which you can't withdraw). You have to upgrade your ranch over a period of days before you can store that maximum amount. It will take a minimum of five days to hit the 1000 mark--or, alternatively, a minimum six instances of messing around with your Wii clock settings (the sixth being to set it back to normal).
4) There's no box interface. Yes, that's correct: a glorified 1000-slot Pokemon box does not have a series-standard box interface with which to conveniently organize Pokemon. The order you deposited them in is the order you're left with.

How does one manage to screw up systems which have been in place for over a decade? They only had to copy and paste what had already been done before, but couldn't manage that. Even a parrot who imitates human speech without contextual understanding is closer to legitimate language than My Pokemon Ranch is to a legitimate storage utility, much less a product worth paying for.

Before anyone argues that I'm merely upset because I spent too much money for an inferior product, I have to say that such a person would be wrong. Between a Smash tournament and various gift cards, I've gotten my last 6000 Wii Points at significant discounts. Going in chronological order, you might say that I effectively paid $2 for LostWinds, $0 for Defend Your Castle, $0 for Family Table Tennis, $2.15 for Dr. Mario Online Rx, $2.69 for Toki Tori, and $5.15 for My Pokemon Ranch. But even if My Pokemon Ranch had been released at a time to cost me effectively $0, I would still be upset. I don't make posts this large over a matter of price unless it's a $50 game that barely warrants a C grade. No, it's a matter of principle. This title is an insult to its series and has set Pokemon storage titles back nine years--literally, seeing as Pokemon Box and Pokemon Stadium 1 each handled extra storage capacity more effectively. Stadium didn't allow a quantity of 1000, mind you (though these were in the days before breeding and before more than 151 Pokemon, so hitting that high wasn't quite as important), but even that title allowed for clean transfer from one portable Pokemon game to another.

I suppose I could mention lesser troubles with My Pokemon Ranch as well. For example, I can point out that the music is repetitive, that the main girl talks for ten or so unskippable minutes before you can begin to deposit anything, or that the Pokemon models are 3D scarcely on par with a heavily anti-aliased version of 1992--to say nothing of their shapes, which are not only neither cute nor appealing, but so hideous as to actually detract from this title. All of that would be tangential, though. The exterior trappings--fair word there, at least in this case--are irrelevant in this scenario of a title which was called upon to do only one thing and ultimately could not do even that.

Get on with it and make a real Pokemon Box Wii, Nintendo, and pretend this abject, abominable aberration of a title never happened.

10 bucks for a mew and 1000 more slots.

also some of the models are cute in a grotesque way.

also all of the traded pokemon either have good egg moves, rare berries or items, or both.

Also problem 1 and 2 in Jiggy's list are exactly the same problem.

Every time you restart the game you get a new Trainer ID number.

Of course such a big pokemon fan like Jiggy already knew this, but she does like her lists.

I can understand your criticism of the storage features, but I think you're being a bit harsh on the product as a whole. Taken at face value as what it is, I'm sure a lot of Pokéfreaks are going to like it. I see it more as a cute (yes, I like the simple papercraft-ish models) playground to watch your Pokémon play in and take pictures of them, and a little bit of a building sim (as you add Pokémon, your ranch grows,) and a nice incentive to play Diamond or Pearl (since Diamond and Pearl give little incentive to play for those of us who have beaten Pokémon games dozens of times and play for the single player.) I haven't even finished Diamond yet, despite owning a copy since launch (and an import copy since Japanese launch,) and yet this cute little ranch sim already has me jumping into my copy of Diamond to catch the "wanted" Pokémon and more to help build up and fill the ranch. I'm also eager to beat the Elite 4 now so I can transfer my hundreds of Porygons from Emerald over and put them in the Ranch to make my own little Pory farm.

I'm sure My Pokémon Ranch is going to have a lot of critics, but I think the real audience is those of us who have always loved the games and characters enough to buy/play/watch anything they put them on, and in that respect, this is a cute and fun diversion in my humble opinion.

That's terrible.

Btw, OP cleaned up and updated. I removed all the extra information like blocks, cost, and territories released for a more crisp look. The assumption is that if the researcher is interested he or she can search for more. If anybody has any official links they'd like me to add to the op (like the online gaming ones?), I'd love to add them.

Why hasn't nintendo released the downladable rare pokemon over the nintendo channel, instead of having people go out their way to find a store that is participating?

I was about to buy Pokémon Ranch... Thank you so much Jiggy!

Now, please Nintendo, let me download the event items for Darkrai, Shaymin, and Arceus. Ok, Arceus isn't happening anytime soon, but the other two, please. I don't want the Pokémon outright, I just want to be able to capture them. That's all.

EDIT: If in the end of the next two weeks Pokémon Ranch passes LostWinds or MLK in sales, I will be very, very sad.

The Yoshi's Story comment was in (really obscure) reference to Drinky Crow's recent callout. >_> I was trying (and probably failing :lol) to get across the point that some people might say Yoshi's Story was disappointing compared to Yoshi's Island, but anyone calling it shovelware is exaggerating--whereas I'm not exaggerating. :(
I probably am exaggerating, but I do really and truly hate what they've done with the "storage" here. :/

The only possible reasons to buy My Pokemon Ranch are if you really, really want that Hypnosis/Synthesis Mew or if you're some kind of collector. Or, as BooJoh suggested, if you actually like the designs of the chibi-ized Pokemon and want to take pictures of them. But even then, I would still say that buying this game makes you part of the problem. I felt so guilty that I had to write an epic post of hate just to offset my sins! :(

In terms of how they're handled technically, yes. In terms of the audience they affect negatively, no. :(

I think he probably was just in a bad mood or something. Pissed off at what the game was and it didn't come out as he envisioned it.
He means well, I think. Just word your answers better please Mr. Bernard. [Is he reading this right now? :D ]
Nah, I think that's kinda his personality. He's had a couple other interviews where he came across the same way. I suspect that some of his comments might be jokes that come across wrong in translation, as well.

I dunno why people are so down on his game, though. Just because the guy doesn't interview well doesn't mean his game will be bad. It still looks like it has great potential, even if he isn't totally satisfied with the final result (and few artists ever are).

Yoshi's Story definitely doesn't deserve such criticism. It may be boring, easy and overly sugarcoated with silly nonsense but it is nothing in the realm of shovelware.

I forgot to mention it in here.

My previous website, XBLAH, which used to deal exclusively with Xbox Live Arcade titles, has now expanded. Thanks to Think Services, I'm now running the new website GamerBytes, which will follow XBLA, PSN and WiiWare titles!

Hopefully I'll be able to bring all sorts of news to the table for WiiWare fans which the other sites don't :)

Thanks for the heads up on Pokemon Ranch. I'm trying my darndest to hold on to my points until either StrongBad or Gyrostar come out, but if they don't hit next week I might pick up Toki Tori since GAF is whoring it so much.

It still kills me that they couldn't manage to implement a proper box system. Just to explain a little more about why the storage doesn't work (only three paragraphs this time!)...

I have 39 Pokemon stored in Ranch now (with my other 11 slots being taken up automatically by the game girl herself), so the game displays two boxes if I try to withdraw something, but there's no option to move any of the Pokemon within those boxes. I can't change my mind and decide that I want to move my Elekid (or whatever) from Ranch box 1 to Ranch box 2, and that's outright absurd.

Also, when I go to withdraw a Pokemon, I can't even choose which place I want to put it back into on my DS game. I can only choose which DS box I want to put it into, and I can't see the contents of that DS box before I decide. It's unreasonable to expect me to remember what's sitting around in my DS game's BOX 16, or even a box that I gave a name to like LOTTO 2, or exactly how I organized my boxes, without being able to look at them.

It's not like I'm asking for these people to invent time travel or cure cancer; they seriously only had to copy Pokemon Box, a pre-existing title, exactly as it was. In that title I could move stuff around anywhere I felt like while also seeing the organization of both Box and the GBA games simultaneously. Ugh. :/

I'm pretty sure that having fun imitating the dialogue of an exaggeratedly-hyper anime girl once every six nights or so isn't the same thing as pretending to be the kind of female who exists on Earth. :p
That said, I later found out that I managed to make even one of GAF's female posters momentarily wonder, so I guess I must have done some kind of exceptional job. D: And to think I wasn't even screening my writing pre-posting with this scientific* research method to determine gender...

Maybe he's French? "Person" is a feminine word in French so a common mistake French people do is to use the feminine "she" when speaking about a person in English, just like they do in French...

It does look cleaner, but I'm a fan of more info. Besides, with the current state or storage the size of a game is an important piece of information. I also like knowing the control support. I'm a sucker for small Wiimote controlled games. I know I can look this info up, but I'd rather see it all in one spot.

For whatever my opinion's worth, I like the OP as it is. I don't think an OP needs to be a comprehensive source of information, just a quick overview. That being said, links to sources of information not covered in the OP could be introduced without adding too much clutter.

Also, perhaps the link to the "Ultimate Awesome VC Discussion" thread should be changed to reflect the current thread title. :/

Beer Pong will be the line's first video game in the series when it is released next week.

It reminds me of Harvest Moon more than anything else, actually. The game is structured into 5-minute long 'days', and as you play you'll constantly have tasks in mind that you want to accomplish during each of the days. You'll find yourself getting very attached to your town (the layout of which is completely customizable) and your citizens. The interaction with those citizens is quite a bit like the interaction with the NPCs in Harvest Moon as well.

Something about the game is very charming and addicting, and it's actually a bit hard to put my finger on just what it is!

Just wanted to say that searching based on recommendations in the Nintendo channel seems to be working now. I searched for hardcore games and finally got some games to come up.

Is anyone picking up the games this week? Take one for the team?

I'll likely get block breaker, but I'm waiting for a review to see how many levels there are.

I also wanted to mention that there is a new feature in the Nintendo channel that shows you graphs and stuff about what people think of each game. It's cool.
