Bungie is laying off 220 employees (~17% of its workforce)

"It's okay to kill people in games but omg children plz don't look, there's a gay character in there and an ugly woman that doesn't look like a barbie"

If your kids won't turn out to be killers because of the "influence" of a game, don't worry...chances are they won't suddenly be lgbt as well because of them. If one of them turns out to be one, they would always be without the game. There's plenty of millenials and gen x people out there that aren't straight and guess what? never played games with a single gay character in them.

Seeing so many posts taking advantage of this massive layoff to talk about "woke stuff" is honestly disgusting and makes no sense. One thing is literally no related with the other. People are losing their jobs right now and you guys are worried about that?
you made lots of assumptions there. and they are definitely related because many people voice their distaste for things in their games they don't want and then vote with their wallet elsewhere

well, dont be so naive. Bungie has championed such causes which have turned off many of their audience and also on the other hand distracts from actual design/art/programming work being done. time is limited in dev cycles. I dont play their woke games anymore because of the horrible influence on my children for 1 reason. i know many parents who have taken the same route. wake up, dont be woke.

That’s a long fucking post to say that you’re a nazi. There, have your fucking culture war, cuck.

I had to double check to make sure this was the same developer that made Combat Evolve back in the day. I loved the first two Halo’s, I would of never imagine two decades later this developer would be washed up like this, that is crazy. This is what came up when I searched-

I have never heard anybody in my circle talk about this Destiny game.

Damn. Why do people simp for bungie anyway with halo. It looks like they would have just make the game as bad as 343 with 4, 5 and infinite.

What happened to the billion dollar employee retention program handed down by Sony to Bungie? Was that a facade?
I’m going to assume any bonus payouts were paid out by now. It’s been over two years since the acquisition. But you never know. Depends what the terms and timing are, and whether or not payouts are given even if fired (and not quitting on your own).

Couldn't get a full 3 (well 4) pages before hurt people chiming in about people not keeping the same energy when MS laid off people and others feeling good about this because "but they are woke".

The fact that Naughty Dog's multiplayer title was advised BY BUNGIE to not move forward is just something i'll never forget.

Imagine saying no to your premium studio that has created Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter, Uncharter and TLOU, literally the mascots of all your generations and taking the opinion of Bungie. I bet their monetization wasn't even that bad...it simply wasn't as predatory as Destiny...which since then has been failing.

That said...sounds like the CEO is not in a good place:

Not the CEO going private on X right after showing off his brand new cars to the people working for him.

Holy shit...imagine being like this.

He was bragging about cars? Lol.

That’s video game employees for ya. Always weird social media bios and posts.

Now compare that bravado to CEOs working for your typical bank or manufacturing company.

The ceo of my company doesn’t even have a Twitter/X account. And if he does it must be some obscure account just for boring family stuff. Any company news is done with your usual earnings reports or Reuters article. No personal agendas or dumb shit like manchildren gaming execs do.

I kept saying when the acquisition was announced with non-standard PR about how independent Bungie would be that it was most likely (or rather obviously) a timed thing.

Nobody buys a company and gives them indefinite freedom.
They might have had it if they didn't fuck Destiny up so bad. TFS was great but after years of bad decisions it could only do so much. Marathon got delayed because of play testers not liking it. Pete parson has ruined Bungie, he should be the first to go.

Sounds like being bought by Sony isn't what they thought it would be...
They knew what they were doing. The execs mind you. Not the regular employees.

Bungie is a mercenary company who’ll partner up or sell out to the highest bidder. And Sony is that company offering $3.5B. It seemed the second the buyout happened then magically bungie financials came crashing down at the same time. The execs cashed out sweetly. Perfectly timing selling at peak value.

If bungie is able to split off from Sony, they’ll go indie for a bit then try to buddy up with EA or Nintendo. They’ve already done their deals with MS, Activision and now Sony. But we’ll see. Maybe Sony will keep them forever.

Bungie actually hires and celebrates race/sex etc instead of practicing real meritocracy. stuff needs to go. be colorblind. run from evil. turn from it. Nazi? no way, they were even worse.

For sure. The main thing the execs want is to get bought over and over again. They've made out like bandits at MS, Activision and now Sony. Must be a hell of a salesman.

It was never about being forced to make Halo. They've made the same shit pretty much this whole time. It's $$$ for the top execs.

LOL. We're not talking about Ghost of Tsushima 2, ND's next project and Gran Turismo 8 flopping back to back. You're truly delusional.

Seriously, how can someone survive if 4-5 studios flop?? It's an epic fail, regardless of the others's success. A summary:

- Haven: uncertain, likely to flop.

- Media Molecule: pretty much dead.

- Neon Koei: who?

- Bungie: chopped up piece by piece.

- Firewalk: soon to burn in a pyre.

Add Firesprite, London Studio and Deviation to this, plus the negative impact on Naughty Dog, Sony's flagship studio.

Hermen isn't fit for the job.

how is it Hermens fault, is he making the games? its the studios and devs in those studios you weirdo. He just took over in 2019 too and only got a real leadership role with real power this year.

Head of production already fired. CEO shown the door. I don't know if Sony Japan knows who to put in charge at this point, and probably had to go with Herman just out of necessity for now.

This is simply not true!
Impossible!

Everybody knows that Sony don’t have studios that fires employees!
Only Microsoft and other evils does that!
Never could this happen to a Sony studio, just never!!!

Shuhei Yoshida did fine black in the day.
- Haven: uncertain, likely to flop.
"likely", but ok, I'll give you that.
- Media Molecule: pretty much dead.
No, and it's why they're giving them another chance with what's probably a low-risk project. MM's shortcomings were its own doing, and long before Hermen Hulst became president of WWS.
- Neon Koei: who?
We don't even know much about them to form any substantiated opinion.
- Bungie: chopped up piece by piece.
Nice try sneaking them on the list. Hermen Hulst had nothing to do with Bungie until June of this very same year, and even then they still remain with the independent leadership. We'll talk again when the full SIE takeover happens.
- Firewalk: soon to burn in a pyre.
Fair.
Add Firesprite, London Studio and Deviation
Not even owned by Sony, be fucking real here.
plus the negative impact on Naughty Dog, Sony's flagship studio.
And no actual proof of that being the case.
Hermen isn't fit for the job.

Head of production already fired.
Connie Booth was not 'head of production', she was head of internal production at WWS America, hence her not being that important to begin with once they started to make operations more global. Very same reason as to why Kazuo Kato from WWS Japan Studio is not there anymore.
CEO shown the door.
Never happened.
I don't know if Sony Japan knows who to put in charge at this point, and probably had to go with Herman just out of necessity for now.
First of all, just say Sony, we all know it's a Japanese company, and second, this is some dumb shit that you have no idea of. You know that they could have given his responsibilities to Hideaki Nishino instead, right?

Wtf?! First Song copies Microsoft's Kinect by adding features and calling it PSVR. Now they're trying to one up them by firing people?! What's next, a Madame Web controller with a big booty?

Not really a timed thing. Pretty sure it had to do with hitting profit goals. If they hit them, they stay completely free. But if they miss them, Sony was stepping in to right the ship before further damage was done.

Ehhhh, sounds like most are senior management, which would be obvious tbh. Two people don't go into one job. Sucks but pretty standard practise.

The bungie of old already felt dead and buried but this feels like that definitive nail in the coffin in a way. It makes me sad. They seemed like a really cool tight knit group of people that just wanted to make the coolest game possible back in the day. Halo releases were like nothing else at the time.

Hopefully those people can find another job quickly and drama free.

Generally profit goals also have a time component though.

So it likely could be both.

Seems like braggin about cars is just a typical day for him...look at this:

Also...here's the CEO's list of cars purchased on BAT. I just said "holy shit" out loud actually:
