Some clues to this new game from the incubation team now at Sony.

Looks like they're already working on Concord 2.

Loves his juicy stink trail scent
The fact that Naughty Dog's multiplayer title was advised BY BUNGIE to not move forward is just something i'll never forget.

Imagine saying no to your premium studio that has created Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter, Uncharter and TLOU, literally the mascots of all your generations and taking the opinion of Bungie. I bet their monetization wasn't even that bad...it simply wasn't as predatory as Destiny...which since then has been failing.

That said...sounds like the CEO is not in a good place:

Not the CEO going private on X right after showing off his brand new cars to the people working for him.

Holy shit...imagine being like this.

That’s based giga chad plays.

I don’t understand why people are acting like this is evidence the merger caused the layoffs. The timeline is stark. Year 2 massive revenue drop and delay. In this particular instance Sony being on board might be saving jobs with less layoffs. Possible less jobs would have been lost if no purchase too. But 45% revenue drop and a delayed product are gonna result in layoffs regardless.

What a bizarre road Bungie has taken.

Left MS for freedoms.
Signed long deal with Activision, locking them into Destiny.
Left Activision deal for freedoms.
Agrees to be bought by Sony.

I’m waiting for the news that a large chunk of Bungie devs are forming their own studio for freedoms.

It reminds me of Respawn and all the rebirths they have had over the years.

They knew what they were doing. The execs mind you. Not the regular employees.

Bungie is a mercenary company who’ll partner up or sell out to the highest bidder. And Sony is that company offering $3.5B. It seemed the second the buyout happened then magically bungie financials came crashing down at the same time. The execs cashed out sweetly. Perfectly timing selling at peak value.

If bungie is able to split off from Sony, they’ll go indie for a bit then try to buddy up with EA or Nintendo. They’ve already done their deals with MS, Activision and now Sony. But we’ll see. Maybe Sony will keep them forever.

Make shitty games win shitty prizes. This boondoggle of games as a service is going to CRASH one can only pray studios go back to making actual games with actual plots

That already happened with Firewalk and Concord.

In this environment - Devs are going to be FAR less likely to form their own studios amidst massive revenue declines and industry wide layoffs.

Layoffs didn't happen as a result of the acquisition, because no one's job over at Bungie was made redundant over someone else at SIE being able to take on those same responsabilities.

These layoffs are the result of poor planning and management at a studio-level, a studio initially granted full independence within the larger SIE organization per the terms of the acquisition for as long as they hit certain financial targets, which they did not and that's why a clause allowing PS Studios to begin to take over Bungie operations has entered into play.

Leadership failures aside, Bungie still makes one of the most played Multiplayer games around.

We're now finding out it was more "Agrees to be saved by Sony". This didn't happen overnight or even in the last 12 months.

Its been two years since the original article and the entire industry is firing people right and left, what did they expect?

So Bungie transitioned many of them to unemployment. I suppose they wanted to show their supports for the transitional worker.

Terrible acquisition, stick to what made you popular in the first place, single player AAA games that are best in class.
... but they're sticking to those.

Demon's Souls, Miles Morales, Sackboy, Returnal, Rift Apart, Forbidden West, Ragnarök, Spider-Man 2, Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade have come out already, with Astro Bot, Until Dawn, Death Stranding 2 and Wolverine on the horizon, alongside the unannounced next games from Neil Druckmann, Cory Barlog, FromSoftware, Sucker Punch, Insomniac, Housemarque and Firesprite, among others.

The live-service initiative's goal is to drive additional growth in parallel to their existing commitment to best-in-class singleplayer games.

It's been over three years since this strategy was unveiled, how is it that some of you still don't seem to get it?

This is simply not true!
Impossible!

Everybody knows that Sony don’t have studios that fires employees!
Only Microsoft and other evils does that!
Never could this happen to a Sony studio, just never!!!
Sony is becoming MS / Activision since they put Ryan in charge. No difference that he left Sony now. The stupidity (greedy short term corporate practices) is self sustaining now.

lol, listen I have faith that they will deliver but let’s not pretend this generation has been anything special from first party.

They have relied heavily on 2nd party exclusives which is fine. Astrobot and Death Stranding 2 I am picking up Day one.

I’m not impressed by an until Dawn remaster in any way.

I do get it, but I have so much to play from 3rd party that’s it not an issue, don’t simp for Sony for the sake of it.

Ngl, these Twitters make the CEO look like he just removed the mentally ill people from Bungie.

Sure, they started great, but then Spider-Man 2 took an entire year to come out after Ragnarök and I could see how that gap killed the momentum they had been able to maintain between 2020-2022, but starting this year they've picked up the pace once again, even if it was through more "variety-style" exclusives rather than any of their massive, story-driven singleplayer games.

But that's why they also saw it fit to partner with Square Enix and Konami, first to exclusively deliver Final Fantasy XVI in between Ragnarök and Spider-Man 2, and then Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Silent Hill 2 in the 18-month period that seems to separate Spider-Man 2 and Death Stranding 2.

And sure, those are not first-party but third-party timed exclusives, but at the end of the day as a PS5 owner, those very much PlayStation-centric games are still there and available only on PS5 at launch (with the exception of Silent Hill 2, also available on PC).

Sony finally stepping in and taking over?

Might actually be good news, especially seeing that leadership also is seeing some changes.
Bungie has been messing up since development of the original Destiny. About time things get shaken up over there.
Their last expansion was really good but they're too inconsistent the last few years.

I'm talking about Xbox fanboys like this. And yes, vixolus is a MASSIVE Xbox fanboy; they were in the ABK thread doing nothing but cheerleading the acquisition almost 24/7. Leave it to someone like this to stealth console-war in a layoffs thread; plenty of companies are hiring, why did vixolus specifically mention Microsoft?

You know, the Microsoft that closed down Tango Gameworks, their only Japanese internal development studio? That closed down Arkane Austin? Fired thousands from gaming side across Xbox, Zenimax and ABK over the past two years? You think these Bungie employees are going to feel comfortable going to a company like Microsoft? Did you even think before posting vixolus, or were you just itching that badly to cap for a company second only to Embracer for worst amount of gaming layoffs so far this decade?

Idiot...
Really annoying that we've added false pretenses of corporate social responsibility and layoffs to the console war narrative.

At the end of the day, these are corporations. The entire tech sector and the game industry along with it was overinflated on cheap loan money and an overheated economy. Its not like the ships ran very much better or more efficiently with this glut of people. It's a market correction where educated, skilled office/WFH dwellers are laid off. Fin.

I thought this was a bad news thread until I scrolled to this post. Are we sure 17% is enough? I still see downturn ahead. I really think they should go 30% and just rehire once we're out of the woods.
Indeed bro, their programers/ppl working on tech stuff should stay but all the woke agenda "artists"- those are basically liabilities and reasons for studio/their next projects not being profitable, get rid of that shit while u still can or u will end up like tons of other closed studios :p

Getting rid of all the pointless roles not contributing to driving revenue.

Good. Bungie is a huge investment for Sony, they can't afford for it to not come good.

Sony paid $3.6 billion for Bungie back only two years ago. What did that get Sony?

- Destiny, a GAAS that's now seen its last expansion and is therefore on its way out
- Marathon, a forthcoming GAAS, release date probably 2025
- A new yet untitled game

That was a ridiculous amount of money for a IP running on fumes plus two new unproven games. Sony could have bankrolled a dozen of big budget AAA games with that $3.6 billion and would have generated more revenues and profits doing so.

And now they've spent all that money and still have 850 Bungie employees on their payroll working on Destiny and Marathon. They're probably still hemorrhaging cash.
I suspect just about all of this is wrong. Truly difficult to accomplish.

Sony head management this generation:-
1- waste half or more of it's first party studios in unrealised gaas games which cancelled or will be shit like concord
2- layoffs many of first party developers including some good talents due to cancelled gaas projects.
3-for more than half of current gen cycle they make most of first party title's cross gen which make them liars as per their promises in the beginning of the generation.
4- spent 3.6 billion in buying bungle( in condition it's remain multiplatform) which is underperforming in past year's
5- failed in handle bungle problems ended with lay-off around 30% of it's manpower
6-close promising studios like London studio lately Which developed new next gen engine for their new title.
7-very shit strategy for vr 2 and many points that i don't remember right now.,

I really don't get how some People's still defend this shit management.

That dog is the biggest Xbox shill in the whole internet. That is without doubt a paid shill that Era just ignores. His concern trolling is nauseating. And the acquisition thread was disgusting to read whenever he was barking.
