Buying my first Nintendo...its a Wii U...what 5 games will give me the Nintendo Oeuvre?

Getting a Wii U this week, LNIB, and am looking for the 5 games that define Nintendo that are playable on the system. It comes with BOTW, what else should I get. As it can play Wii games, those are fair game too.

Edit: Disc based games please :)

Edit2:
Seems it can play Wii U, Wii and GameCube (seems this is if modded, not going that route)...

I'm ignoring virtual console games.

Super Mario galaxy 1
Wind waker HD or Twilight Princess (to get the classic zelda vibe)
Yoshi wooly world

That's 3. Need to think of more
It's a good question though

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
Donkey Kong Country
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Bayonetta 2
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Super Mario 3D World

(These are all Wii U games)

BTW Isn't it crazy that the Wii U has a better library of Nintendo exclusives than the Switch ...? I can name more must have Wii U exclusives than Switch exclusives.

Ah I would add Metroid Prime Trilogy and Mario Kart 8.

Whoever said FZero GX. Wii U only plays GameCube games if modded. Mario Kart is a better choice if you are looking for pure Nintendo vibe

So, I assume you're buying a Wii remote and nunchuk as well? You'll need those for Wii games. Just trying to avoid any nasty surprises.

Mario 3D World
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Even if you just play alone I think you'll have a good time)
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD (I know you'll have BotW but that game is drastically different in gameplay style from any other Zelda)
[Free space*]

*If you decide to put a Xenoblade game there I would recommend the original over X, though.

Two of my favorite Wii games that are on the eshop, not already listed, are Kirby’s Epic Yarn and Kirby Return to DreamLand. Both are so good and the gameplay is fairly different between them.

Nice choice! The WiiU is an excellent system.

I would go for Mario Maker, Hyrule Warriors, Mario 3D world, Xenoblade X and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze.

Just to name a few because there's so many good games also on Wii and the virtual console.

I'll try and suggest what hasn't been suggested yet.

WiiU:

Nintendo Land is great. Decent to play alone tons of fun with other people.
ZombieU is the best version of the game
NES Remix easy pick up and play game Basically an NES ROM hack style game where you are task to do certain objectives to complete the round.

Wii:

Wii Sports Resorts or Wii Sport. Great with extra buddies but can be enjoyed alone.
Excite Truck - Arcade racer with some really fun mechanics
Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom Great fighting game if you like those types of games.

I'm old. Someone buying their first Nintendo sounds impossible to me. My parents still call playing videogames, "playing Nintendo". When I was a kid the two words were synonymous.

To answer your question, buy a thing with a Nintendo Selects label. Mario, Zelda are the obvious games.

1. Metroid Prime Trilogy
2. LoZ: WW HD
3. Mario Kart 8
4. Super Mario 3D World
5. Captain Toad

You’ve gotta play Metroid Prime 1 in the trilogy at least.

Only 5? Easy.

1. Super Mario 3D World
2. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD
3. Donkey Kong Country
4. Xenoblade Chronicles X
5. Mario Kart 8

These 5 titles, imo, define the Wii U in the most Nintendo brand way possible.

Other honorable mentions of must have exclusives are Bayonetta 2, Splatoon, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, New Super Mario Bros U.

Great console.

Here are my favorite games on it :

Bayonetta 2
Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze
Fast Racing Neo
Hyrule Warriors
Need for Speed Most Wanted U
Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor Edge
Project Zero
Sonic Lost World
Super Mario 3D Land
Tokyo Mirage Sessions
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Zelda Wind Waker
Zombi U

I would avoid going the Wii route : you will have to install a sensor bar, need to have wiimotes around, charge them etc... Really annoying stuff honestly. And Wii games are only 480p, not great looking.

Ultimate overall experience would be something like this

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Super Mario 3D World (Never played but it looks great)
Mario Kart 8 (if there's online + can play with regular controller)

Additional 6th option and a must-play game: Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario 3D World
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Pikmin 3
Zombi U
Star Fox Zero

A few other recommendations:
Kirby's Rainbow Curse - Touch-screen based game so you have to play using the gamepad.
Deus Ex Human Revolution - Fantastic FPS/adventure/stealth game if you've never played it, Wii U version is very good.
Rayman Legends - Great 2D platformer made for Wii U, best version
Lego City Undercover - Lego take on GTA-style game, Wii U is the original and best version (but has very long load times)

Also download some VC games. Wario Land 4, Metroid Zero Mission and Earthbound are pretty good.

Speedwagon

Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel. Yabuki turned off voice chat in Mario Kart races. True artists of their time.
Get Pokken it's like $5.

BTW Isn't it crazy that the Wii U has a better library of Nintendo exclusives than the Switch ...? I can name more must have Wii U exclusives than Switch exclusives.
The Wii U barely has any exclusive left, most of its games are available on Switch.

TOP 5 WIIU would be:

Xenoblade Chronicles X
Super Mario 3D World
Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Mario Kart 8

Most of those games are available elsewhere and in some cases the other version is better, but that's my wiiU top 5 in no particular order.

If you got room for one more, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE for the honourable mention.

In addition to Breath of the Wild:

1. Metroid Prime Trilogy
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Super Mario Galaxy 2
4. Super Mario 3D World
5. Donkey Kong Country (can't go wrong with either; the masses prefer Tropical Freeze, but I liked Returns more)

These are the best-of-the-best Wii/Wii U-era Nintendo games.

The Wii U is still a really good system for their legacy stuff (at least for the time being) and definitely better than the Switch on that front, if you find that you're enjoying the games suggested, many of the older games in these series are available on the virtual console. It's the best console out there currently for playing the Metroid and Zelda series.

KungFucius

King Snowflake
Donkey Kong Country
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Bayonetta 2
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Super Mario 3D World

(These are all Wii U games)

If they are Wii U exclusives, why can I play 3 of them on Switch?

BoTW is a WiiU game too. Plays better on Switch, but I played it on WiiU

OP bought Wii u as their first nintendo, so does it matter to the subject?

They were first on Wii U, so they still kind of are wii u games, that are ported for switch.

I would list

(BOTW)
the rabbids party game(s), cant remember the name but we had fun with a friend to play one of those
resident evil revelations
resident evil revelations 2 (these were cool to play on coop, they use the screen nicely)
project zero
xenoblade x

I would not bother with most of first party games in the begining. They are quite similar games after all, and could get boring fast.

I would get 1 first party (BOTW), and then rest from the genres you like. Maybe horror + rpg/adventure and some party game for coop if there is that option.

Ah, a fellow Wii U user! I have a few questions of my own.

Question - So you need a wii remote and sensor bar for
Metroid Prime Trilogy?
Mario Galaxy 1/2?
Zack and Wiki Quest for Barbaros Treasure?

Here are some recs- Note if there is a version for the switch I'm focusing on that one.

Bayonetta 2
Wind Waker HD
Twilight Princess HD (If you can find it.)
Xenoblade X
Muramasa The Demon Blade(If you can find it.)

Other recs-
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Hyrule Warriors (Ultimate on Switch)
Mario Kart 8 - (Delux on Switch)
Pandora's Tower
The Wonderful 101
Xenoblade (Though Switch DE QoL improvements makes Wii/N3DS/Wii U versions all obsolete though)

Virtual Console Recs
Golden Sun
Golden Sun: The Lost Age
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (3DS version brings artstyle to the official standard seen in the official artwork. Lots of QoL and improvements.) Original is still a classic though.
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Paper Mario
Super Paper Mario
Super Metroid
Super Mario RPG Legend of the 7 Stars
Metroid: Fusion
Metroid: Zero Mission

I think some of the Castlevania games are there also. Any recs? Only one I've played is Lords of Shadow lol.
