California Gov. Newsom: First responders will be first laid off if state doesn’t receive federal funds

California Gov. Gavin Newsom says first responders will be the “first ones laid” off unless federal bucks arrive in the Golden State in the near future.

The Democrat appeared to be playing a political game of chicken with Republicans in Congress over the weekend during a discussion about the coronavirus pandemic with CNN’s Jake Tapper.
“I hope they’ll consider this: the next time they want to salute and celebrate our heroes, our first responders, our police officers and firefighters, consider the fact that they are the first ones who will be laid off by cities and counties,” Mr. Newsom said. “The folks who are out there, the true heroes of this pandemic, are healthcare workers and nurses. … They’re the first ones to be laid off.”

Apologies if this has been posted before. Didn’t see it anywhere on here myself.

Such a poorly managed state that boasts the worlds 5th largest economy. Why is that?

EDIT: 7th largest economy, not 5th. I was mistaken.

Is he completely deranged?
In what universe does he think that a "do as I say or the puppy gets it" threat is going to make him look like the good guy?
"Do as I say or I will make sure more of my electorate will die"

How does his brain work?
People actually voted this guy into office?

Take that Drumph, I will kill my own population unless you give me more money!

EDIT: it would be so epic if trump just trolled him and responded on twitter with "I don't negotiate with people that threaten to kill their hostages".

Probably because the haves and have nots in California are oddly skewed. For every rich techie there's probably 3 bums.

Name one other state that has homeless tents lined up for blocks and someone made a Shit Locator app. You'd think every state in the US with good weather (southern states) should all have homeless tents in cities, but it's basically only California.

Fuck this guy I didn’t think it was possible for me to vote Trump but thanks Newsom you win. The state has over reached on guns, shelter in place and now the refusal to let businesses responsibly reopen with social distancing and masks has cost about 6000 of my colleagues their jobs. I don’t put that on Trump despite the media hype I put it on Gavin Newsom.

I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he was speaking historically and not actually threatening.
I’ve seen how the media twists words out of context all the time with trump and other conservatives so I’ve begun to assume the best in quotes as opposed to the worst.

I do wonder why first responders would be first to get fired. Shouldn’t state office workers be first to go or cuts in pensions/wages happen first? Maybe Governor Newsom needs to play sim city or cities skylines to figure out how to budget. If you need money you reduce wages first, don’t just sell the fire stations, police stations and hospitals. We need more gamers in politics.

When the kidnapper threathens to kill the hostage he always picks the highest value hostage first.

Because no one would think "Oh no, not the red tape bureaucrats that find ways to take more of my money. We have to save them."

Normal playbook for politicians trying to raise taxes or ask for money. We will lay off the most important people. We won't cancel intersectional studies conferences in vegas, or bike path projects, or EV charging stations at all DMV offices. But we will fire firefighters, teachers, and policeman.

Bonus points to national politicians who don't even fund firefighters and policeman but still claim federal budget cuts are going to lead to firefighters being laid off.

It’s definitely a politician thing both parties do it. In CA we have had a one party monopoly for years though and that needs to end. The state needs some fiscal minded GOP blood injected into it but I wouldn’t want them to have this much power either. Balance the force! If my company can cut 6000 jobs Newsom can avoid cuts to essential services by reducing CALPERS and laying off bureaucrats and workers that keep their jobs solely because they understand some arcane coding language from the 70s. It would be cheaper to just hand the bureaucracy over to Deloitte or Accenture to upgrade shit and then you can do less with fewer people and save teachers, police, and fire fighters.

Not even trying to defend this I see. I mean it’s indefensible, so I guess this is the best you can do.
What is your complaint? I've been on record with public disdain for the California experiment on this board since forever.

Go ahead, Newsome... lay off the first responders. Let's see how well that works out for you and your state.

Independent of California and Newsome, I do know that there's been some confusion about what Federal COVID-19 emergency funds can be used for. I know my state wanted to help backfill it's budget (i.e. cover state revenue lost because of COVID-19) and were told that they couldn't use the money for that, which does seem somewhat unfair.

Keep in mind he is doing this at the same time:

Not to mention continuing to kneecap his state's economy with his ridiculous lockdown.
It's by design. These evil tyrants sacrifice their peasants to gain power and control.

With the TV fall lineup being pushed mostly to Spring 2021, now is the time for other states to knock out Hollywood and its influence by creating content for the fall.

Tons of things are already filmed in Atlanta and Toronto. Still makes Hollywood money from the studios being there.

Trump should just respond with wellfare for those workers, and not for the higher ups. Then sit back and laugh hard.

It is quite fucked up when people who are not even citizens of California can get state aid and citizens of that state are still waiting for state unemployment insurance.

—————————————

Philip Hamilton, a Santa Cruz resident who is a legal services worker and process server active in Santa Clara County, said he originally filed for unemployment in mid-March but has yet to receive a payment. Hamilton also hasn’t been able to reach the EDD on the phone and hasn’t been able to log into his account on the EDD web site.

“It’s a completely broken system,” Hamilton said. “I’m very disappointed. I’ve been working since I was 14 years old. I paid for college. This is the first time in my life that I have applied for unemployment, and they need to come through for people.”

The problem is all those people leave and then vote for the same lunatics wherever they land. Californians are like metastatic cancer for the rest of the USA.
I know its crazy, why vote for policies that where so bad that they cause you to uproot and leave?

Even Tesla is looking to leave CA, it drives me insane.

These are the same crazy people that think socialism can work in America, despite seeing it fail horribly everywhere else. They think they just need one more chance to get it right.

So they think "yeah, we screwed up California but if we move to Texas and have another chance we won't screw things up that badly again."

But of course, they do... liberalism is a mental disorder.

One of the central pillars of their worldview is that the current state of things is Bad, and the Others are to blame for it being Bad. They see themselves as beacons in a dark world, so if their utopia fails, it is probably because the underlings didn't do it correctly or people were too poisoned by capitalist greed or our Enemies were too powerful this time around or whatever other excuse.

Anything but pointing the finger back at their own voting record and their own worldview. You're basically asking people to believe they aren't saints when they've been told that for years. Hard pill to swallow, no matter who you are. Humans are psychologically resistant to these kinds of eye-opening admissions.

A few years ago Nashville voted down this massive public transit boondoggle (not as bad as their high speed rail disaster), and all the locals blamed it on transplants from NY, CA, etc. Not sure if it is true or not, but the point is that people are complaining.

In my experience, Californians are a lot like boomers (and obviously California boomers are a whole special thing). Despite evidence to the contrary, they still think it is 1958 and their state is the envy of the world, not the decrepit third world dump it has become. They cannot connect the policies and politicians they supported over the decades to the real world consequences that caused them to leave.

That seems to be liberals in a nutshell.

Granted, conservatives suffer from this as well to a certain extent, but not as badly as liberals.

From a logical standpoint why would the first responders be the first to be laid off during a budget shortfall?

I understand it as a threat but for it to not make him look like an idiotic asshole there must be some sort of logic for that being how it would happen normally. There's a metric fuckton of bureaucracy that should get the axe first, right?

If they threatened to cut funding for illegal aliens and needle programs, no one would care, which is the correct response. So they hold hostage jobs that are both valuable and necessary to raise ire. Pay attention Californians, your governor hates you.
Bleeding heart liberals would care about the needle program and illegal alien funding cuts and those people make up this base. He certainly doesn't want to piss them off.

On the other hand, I'm willing to bet that a lot of those same liberals wouldn't give a damn if the police budget was cut.
