Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has posted a far better week at physical retail than last year's disappointing Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Sales of the new title are 42% up compared with Vanguard, and nearly 9% up over Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War from 2020.

Sales are down 61% compared with 2019's Modern Warfare, although downloads have since become dominant and digital sales data will be available later in the week. 53% of boxed sales were on PS5, 29% on Xbox and 18% on PS4, although do note that Xbox tends to perform more strongly when it comes to digital market share.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the third biggest physical release of the year, behind FIFA 22 and Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

The arrival of Call of Duty means FIFA 23 ends its four-week stay at No.1 and drops to second place. The EA football game continues to trend slightly ahead of its predecessor in terms of boxed sales by just over 7,000 copies.

New at No.3 is the Nintendo Switch game Bayonetta 3. The Bayonetta series has always been a relatively niche title in the UK. This title's opening week performance is 4% up over the Switch port of Bayonetta 2, which was released in 2018. There have been a few signs that Switch game sales are starting to slow in the UK, with overall Switch physical software sales down 9% year-to-date.

Last week's new Switch game, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope from Ubisoft, dropped 52% in sales week-on-week and falls from No.3 to No.7. It's a pretty good result for a second week, although the game's first week performance was down by more than half what its predecessor managed (Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle released in August 2017).

The biggest new release last week was Warner Bros' Gotham Knights, which this week saw a 73% sales fall and drops from No.2 to No.5. Meanwhile, Persona 5 Royal (also released last week) drops from No.6 to No.15 after a 61% sales slip. Last week's A Plague Tale: Reqiuem has dropped out of the Top 40 altogether.

There were a few smaller releases this week. Star Ocean: The Divine Force debuts at No.18, Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord comes in at No.21, and Resident Evil: Village Gold Edition (featuring the game's new DLC) comes in at No.24.

Finally, bouncing back into the Top Five is Horizon: Forbidden West on PS5, once again boosted by hardware bundles.

Need to double check the chart

Title
1 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
2 FIFA 23
3 Bayonetta 3
4 Horizon Forbidden West
5 Gotham Knights
6 Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
7 Mario + Rabbids: Spark of Hope
8 Nintendo Switch Sports
9 Splatoon 3
10 LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Think Vanguard was 70:30 re: physical split. Yeah, 49% PS5, 21% on PS4.

Is mw2 physical sales even matter?
The disc has like 72mb. It's a mini digital key at this point.
Not so much, hoping Chris gives the GSD data later this week. Its been a while since we have gotten that data. Might be lucky cause its EOM so could get the monthly data on Friday/early next week.

Think Vanguard was like 80% digital.

You“re ignoring that PS5 is still the most scalped product out right now.
Increasing the numbers of ps5 counters that.
As long as Sony provides enough ps5, consumers should be able to get them.

Plus, consumers buy 1 game from the store, for their new ps5. HFW seems to be the most popular one.

The entire comment string makes no fucking sense, drawing conclusions from the asshole without direct statement of where those sales figure of that game are coming from. It’s BOOSTED by hardware bundles, but without the exact numbers its all nonsense.

Also that a company is gearing up for a future game release… all of it is a stretch of the imagination. Not everyone buying a HFW bundle will buy a God of War game. Especially because not every PS5 bundle sold is in a consumer’s house right now, it’s in a garage somewhere waiting to be sold.

The abuse of statistics is incredible To make the “logic” of the gearing up comment work.

Was surprised to see no retailers selling the PS5 MW2 bundle, only ps direct where selling it.

Ps5 FIFA 23 bundle was the main seller last 2 weeks for other retailers. Considering Ragnarok bundle is around the corner, wonder if Sony will even bother sending retailers the MW2 bundle.

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
People fell in love with call of duty with 2007’s 4 the reality is the game hasn’t evolved since they’re average at best in spite of that people settle for mobile esk menus, lot of crappy perks and maps.

Well about that...
Yea, logic is like

and statistics are like

So when all those things don’t matter beca you’re communicating with people making huge leaps of logic, it doesn’t even matter what you say.

There is a population of this board that is very bored with the news drought and really needs their team to be winning all the time, logic be damned.

Ok? I don't think this is something to be praised or anything since Vangard wasn't the best CoD and neither was a big deal.

Now if it fairs better than MW2019(which it didn't), then that would be impressive.

In a very simple term.

This November, they have God of war 2. In order to prepare for it. Sony would need to supply the market with new ps5.

And since those consoles would go to the store, new customers would pick a new ps5 game for their system. Just like how people pick Smash bro for their new switch console, horizon gets picked by the new customers. Since that is the big game, aside of miles.

Sony is expecting huge God of war 2 sales. Which is why, we see alot of ps5 supply. This is why these ps5 games appear on these list. Compared to xbox, which is just gamepass.

The better place for that exact conversation is in a hardware sales thread, not one about game sales with a blurb about pack in games.

In that thread we would have exact numbers to talk about. This is all speculation, fairly safe speculation, but why not talk about the actual content that's directly posted here and then save all that for hardware with solid numbers.

New console for new customer = new game being bought = that game selling alot = that game getting in this rank.

Fairly simple.

I said it before and I will say it again, most of COD money is from COD mobile, Warzone and Infinity Ward's COD games. Going forward Activision should start thinking about making COD on Console/PC exclusive to Infinity Ward, especially keep Sledgehammer Games away from that IP. Only Infinity Ward seems motivated to make a good COD game.

Never developed a decent COD.🤷🏼‍♂️
They made the last good COD campaign, Advanced Warfare. They should have really gone that route, they seem to not be motivated in making these WW II themed games. Advanced Warfare could have been the series that defined them, like Black Ops is to Treyarch or Modern Warfare is to Infinity Ward.
