Sorry I don't know how to word this. I might just be crazy please decide for me.

About a year ago, I noticed a huge 10 inch crack in my apartment wall. I have no idea where it came from, I just assumed it was from the building settling or bad weather I dunno, didn't think too much of it. It wasn't really too damaging of a crack, some stucco would fix it no problem.

So I had an inspection like two days after I noticed the crack. I pointed it out the the apt manager, and she was like ok, and that was it. She didn't say anything about repairs, or sending someone over. That was a year ago.

So today I come home, and it's fucking fixed. It looks like someone filled it with stucco and painted over it. I know the crack was there a few months ago, I remember looking at it, so it was fixed recently.

THere's no way anyone from apt coulda fixed it, they can't enter unless I give hem permission right? Last time they fixed my door lock the manager asked if they could enter if I wasn't there, I said no, so she was like ok when will you be home?

So either someone entered without permission or it fixed itself? I'm kinda freaked out a little. Like why would they wait a year to fix it and not tell me and fix it when I'm not home?

Am I overreacting??

At my complex they'll enter without permission.

But isn't it incase of emergencies like a fire? I live in ca btw. And why would they enter and not tell me about it afterwards?

Yes plaster walls can fill and paint themselves

I thought maybe cause it's hot, the building expands when it settles, and the crack got pushed back together.

But it doesn't explain the paint and stucco.

Yes, your house self-heals +5 HP every 24 hours, with no mana required. It's a rare buff.

I don't know about Canada but at my complex we're required to let them in for pest control and a few other things. For all you know they've entered tons of times to change air filters, pest control whatever. They may not tell you afterwards because, I dunno, why go through the effort?

All I'm saying is the wall's not going to repair itself so the easiest, likeliest answer is that your landlords repaired it. Maybe they're thinking of selling and wanted to fix it up, maybe the maintenance guy was just in there on his own doing something else, saw it and fixed it up real quick, no telling, but I'm sure it was someone with your apartment complex because no-one but them would go in there, repair your wall and leave.

Ask your apartment manager and just friendly ask if she can give a notice next time when someone might need to enter your apartment.

Ok I was more joking about the healing. But I don't think they can enter w/o permission , at least according to the websites I've been looking at.

Most landlords don't care what the law says. Your lucky they came in to make repairs instead of peak through your stuff.

On topic OP, they probably came in and while you're out and fixed it. It might have been a structural problem that affected the whole complex, which would justify their entrance in their eyes.

yea this seems plausible. But this place gives notices for everything they do. Cleaning the gutters, chimineys, smoke alarms, painting the parking lot, power washing sidewalks, they send a two week notice for everything, especially when they intend to enter apartments.

I just figured if it was something as serious as structural damage , they would definetly notify us. And I don't think the crack was indicative of structural damage in the first place. It was more of a cosmetic crack, but enough to be noticed for sure. It's not like there was air coming in from the outside.

I'm fine with the bleeding. It's when they start yelling at me in ancient sumerian that I usually start to worry and call the landlord.

LMAO

hey for real, if I stop posting send help.

Would they notify you at all? Before or after?
After? No. Before, they usually leave a note on my door several days prior, yeah. Being that it's a low tech solution sometimes the paper's rendered unreadable by rain or the tape loses its adhesiveness and flies away in the wind but the effort's usually made before hand.

They may have tried notifying you too for all you know, hell, maybe they think they did and you just never got the message. There's generally nothing nefarious about the whole thing.

My guess, with something so minor and a year in the past is they waited until they'd collected enough miscellaneous small tasks where they felt it was worth hiring someone to come and fix them all and it was going to get done on that day, they probably fixed a lot of small loose ends that day and tried notifying people but whether everyone was notified in advance or not they were probably going through with it that day and did it.

But they never ever bother to come and tell me after the fact that they've been inside.

Maybe your right, I feel a bit better, but I still think at the least they would left a voice mail. I guess I'll just ask them. Thanks.

Are you high?

Now I'm tired.

But I don't think they can enter w/o permission , at least according to the websites I've been looking at.

I spent about a year doing small make ready work and painting for an apartment complex, mostly empty units, but a couple of times a year they'd send someone around the complex taking care of painting and repairs in occupied units.
They'd send out notices letting everyone know that during a specific week or two somebody would be coming by. I think the idea was that if you didn't set up a time/day with them after the notice we'd just come in and do it during the day, when people are typically gone. I saw some interesting things during that time...
Anyway, maybe there was just a paperwork miscommunication or it was assumed you'd given them permission at some point. I would say you should just be happy you live in an apartment and something got fixed.

Actually cracks can 'heal'. They are often caused by a lack of moisture in the ground and can open up in summer and come back together in winter. Although I guess you'd still see a line, maybe?

Very strange. My friends in Cardiff happen to have experienced something similar. They had told me about cracks in there walls, sometimes they even thought they could hear their neighbours through them. One day, the cracks apparently all just disappeared.

Clearly the cracks healing represents something in the OP's life that's repaired itself. Whether that be the heart, a relationship or OP's trust in the human condition we may never know.

If it was originally caused by the ground shifting then maybe the ground just shifted back

Was the crack at a drywall seam? I've hadn't cracks expand and contract along the verticals in corners of my house. They can "disappear" at that point. They obviously haven't been fixed in the traditional sense, but the expansion makes it appear as such.

Alternatively, your walls are alive and you are already dead.

Yes, you can fill it in or plaster over it.

If it was due to a shift in the property settling or what have you, it might not be a huge deal.

But if there's a more serious structural problem and/or if water is getting in there, you can fix it all you want but it's bound to come back and more importantly there is something serious going on behind that wall that needs to be addressed.

Why don't you just read your lease? It will tell you if they can or not. It sounds like they fixed it for you. Give the building manager a call and I am sure she will confirm the repair.
