Can my wages be garnished if I don't pay back my student loans?

So my job sent me an email saying that some dude contacted them about paying back my student loans and I could pay him $54 a month so they wouldn't garnish them. The company is the National Student Loan Program. Can they do that?

Yes. Even more fun is that the collectors on student loans don't even need to sue you to be able to garnish wages.

They will find you again. Best to man up and pay that shit back.

I have been at this job for 2 years. I hope it will be another 2 before they find me. First paycheque they garnish, I am giving my 2 weeks notice. Also, I have been getting offers from other companies for more money anyways. This would just be an initative to do it finally. Can they take out money if I am going back to school next semester?

Why the fuck won't you just pay back your student loans? It won't take them as long to find you again. You do have to provide your SSN when you fill out tax forms at a new job. The reason it took so long to "find you" this time is that they don't prefer to garnish your paychecks - they give you awhile to prove you're not a total deadbeat.

This is really bad news for your future credit, and may even prevent you from being able to take out student loans when you go back to school.

Consolidate your loans and then apply for a forbearance or deferment until you can pay, that is what I did and is not hard at all. Dont fuck off your credit.

One you are fucking crazy for not paying that shit back. Your credit is now history.

Two, if you're going back to school or have not finished, why do you have to pay? I am pretty sure that student loans are deferred until you finish.

You are fucking crazy though.

Social Security ##. They will follow you to your grave. Don't fuck up your credit more than it already is =P. Pay it!

So let met get this straight. You're going to quit your job because the loan collections agency is going to start garnishing your wages? First, it's not your job's fault that they are doing that. They HAVE to let them take your money by law. Secondly, if you get another job, they'll just do the same thing.

Why are you being such a loser? I wish that my student loans had been only $54/month when I graduated. Start paying it back, and put it behind you. Defaulting on a student loan, as others have said, will completely trash your credit.

54bucks/month is pretty low, the same thing is happening to my friend but he is paying 100/biweekly. Thats alot more than what you have to.

wow so you prefer them to fuck up your credit rather than paying back 54 dollars a month? you are going to regret thinking like this when you get a older and want to buy a house or even buy a new car but can't because your credit is screwed up beyond repair.

Yeah I already have really really bad credit and I've been keeping under the radar for the most part for the past couple of years living at places without having to be on a lease and working at certain jobs that were under the table. What if I took a job out of the country?

Fifty four fucking dollars a month? Are you shitting me? Try $350 a month for private loans and $100 for federal.

Jesus Christ, get on that.

As everyone else in this thread is going to tell you: PAY BACK YOUR STUDENT LOANS.

You are seriously screwing up your credit by avoiding paying on your loans. No matter what job you take, no matter where (in the US) you go, they will find you by your social security number.

And it won't stop there. Right now they're just threatening to take money out of your check. Since I'm sure part of your loan was a federal loan, next they'll nab you on your taxes. Any tax return you think that you're getting back will be garnished. You won't be approved for any type of car loan. Any type of credit card that you're possibly approved for will have an outrageous interest rate. Applying for a home mortgage? Forget it.

I hate to sound like a bill collector, but your life can become quite stressful if you don't start putting money towards your student loans. What's really silly about your situation, is that if you're going to school right now, you can defer your loan payment. If not, you can consolidate your payments. You can talk to the customer service of the bank(s) that offered you the loan about a longer payment at a lower cost. They just want their money.

PAY BACK YOUR STUDENT LOANS.

Edit:

Joke post? Why would you want to completely mess up your credit by avoiding your
financial responsibilites? Anything less than 100 dollars a month is a steal when it comes to paying back your student loan. Were you not able to finish your schooling? Did you flunk out of school? What kind of decent paying job can you possibly get outside of being a bartender that is going to pay you under the table?

I just can't understand why someone would purposely destroy their financial future like that...

Please do. I suppose eventually you will be in prison instead! Then you can avoid your loans all you want!

This has to be a fucking joke.

Dude, have you ever heard of "forbearance" or "deferment"?
Get off GAF and grow up. It'll still be here when you get back.

This thread is funny.

I have a friend who did not pay her first student loan payment she had to make this month and from what she said, has little intentions of making the second payment either. She says that since they only sent her one letter asking about why she hasn't paid, she is still ok. Yet she just went on a $400 shopping spree the last weekend.

Are you serious? You'd really go to these lengths to not pay back $54 a month? Really? You're an even bigger fucking loser than I thought. Do you actually have the money to move to another country for a job? Yes? Then pay back your fucking loan!

Wow! I'm just stunned.

Well usually you have to be considered a full-time student to defer the payment, which is 12 or more credits (at least on my agreement). So basically you have to be taking that many credits, or start paying while you are in school. Otherwise it defers until 6 months after graduation.

Don't try to run from this, you can't. If there is one thing in the world people don't mess around with, its money. They want their money, and they are going to get it. And it sounds like they are giving you a pretty nice deal. I know plenty of friends that have to pay out damn near $200 a month. Now that stuff is crazy. Hell, if I were you I'd give them more than $54 a month just to get that mess finished with.

I would just like to say, AlternativeUlster, that you are a fucking moron.

How long have you been skipping out on your payments? The interest is PILING on, and the amount you owe is only going to continue going up as time goes on.

Even if you got an interest-free loan, which I doubt you have the mental capacity to do, seeing the way you're handling this, your credit score is in the shitter. Interest rates for you will be through the roof on everything from now on. You will not be able to get mortgages or loans for large purchases, like cars or houses.

All of this because you weren't willing to pay off, what, 5000-6000 dollars in student loans?

Even if you were paying this over 30 years (which I doubt), or 360 months, the total amount you pay would be only $19440

you're fucking pathetic.

Nah I didn't.

Ok, first off, I admit I am just a little off center and don't have my feet on the ground. I am also very much afraid of the power that the government has. Maybe it was too many David Icke books or too much Alex Jones, I don't know. But yeah, I was a bouncer for a couple of years that paid under the table and did some construction, writing for a spanking pornography magazine and campaign work too that were all under the table. For the most part when I move to a house, it is never with a big rental company if it is actually ever with the people that own the house in which most of the time it is not. My new place is just because my roommate's lease was going to be up in 4 days and I had to find a place quick. I have a college education but it is just an associates. I owe about $10,000 or something of that nature. Also, I know that I have bad credit but I think it is for my own benefit. I am awfully horrible with money and if I ever got a credit card with a 100,000 dollar limit like my sister, I would blow it on music equipment and records and then they would really be after me. I maxed out a 1,000 credit card and didn't pay it back but I was still able to get approved for credit cards for whatever reason. Also, I haven't paid my taxes in 5 years and don't ever plan on owning a house or a car really.

If they ever caught you for that they could put you away for a good little bit. Then it wouldn't just be your credit ruined.

Why? You never want to have your own place or your own car?

The not paying your taxes thing is even worse than the student loans. You might be fine though, if you were getting paid under the table during a couple of those years. If your on the books income was low enough, you wouldn't have to worry about taxes for that year.

Oh, oh, I get to tell my best story ever.

This girl who stalked me my first year of grad school [she filed a false police report against me to "get my attention," as she put it] is convinced that you only have to pay back the first $60,000 of your student loans. Anything beyond that would be free money from the government. She and I aren't on speaking terms, obviously, but I've heard from others that she believes this because "she met with a lawyer who told her so." What's great is that it's entirely that she has imagined this meeting with the lawyer but she really believes that it happened, because she has a hard time distinguishing between her imagination and reality.

She still teaches in our department, btw, when she's not living off of this "free" government money.

Maybe if you get off GAF you'll get back to the real world where people have responsibilities and pay their bills. So, on my book... you are pathetic. Thank you.

if your years of schooling didn't land you a job where you could afford a relatively measley $54 a month than they must have been a complete waste of time and money and I guess I can see why you wouldn't want to pay them back
