Can my wages be garnished if I don't pay back my student loans?

Skipping on loan payments and dodging taxes ... I don't know what to say. You're kind of miring yourself down in deep shit. Why purposefully get yourself in trouble like this?

Ok, first off, I admit I am just a little off center and don't have my feet on the ground. I am also very much afraid of the power that the government has. Maybe it was too many David Icke books or too much Alex Jones, I don't know. But yeah, I was a bouncer for a couple of years that paid under the table and did some construction, writing for a spanking pornography magazine and campaign work too that were all under the table. For the most part when I move to a house, it is never with a big rental company if it is actually ever with the people that own the house in which most of the time it is not. My new place is just because my roommate's lease was going to be up in 4 days and I had to find a place quick. I have a college education but it is just an associates. I owe about $10,000 or something of that nature. Also, I know that I have bad credit but I think it is for my own benefit. I am awfully horrible with money and if I ever got a credit card with a 100,000 dollar limit like my sister, I would blow it on music equipment and records and then they would really be after me. I maxed out a 1,000 credit card and didn't pay it back but I was still able to get approved for credit cards for whatever reason. Also, I haven't paid my taxes in 5 years and don't ever plan on owning a house or a car really.

HA!

I'm now sure that this is a joke. No one who can type that coherantly is this ignorant. Had me worried for a sec. ^_^

Nah, this dude isn't stupid. He knows how to dodge and evade, which takes some intelligence. He went to school. He just sucks with money. It happens, but he should have gotten help before it came to this.

I know a loanshark, but if you fuck around, you'll be tortured before you die.

Get an accountant or tax lawyer who can set up some communication with the IRS and relieve your tax dilemma with a few fees. Start paying your loans. Fix these things.

A buddy of mine went to Northwestern U a couple years before I did and left school ONE class short of graduation! He ran from his loans for a couple years, but they found him and have been garnishing his wages every since. I, on the other hand, have been faithfully paying $531/month for the last three years and want to cry every time I see how much goes towards interest.

Unless you're just barely making ends meet, there's no reason why you can't pay back your loans faster to avoid some interest. Just make bigger payments than the minimum amount due.

Are you even sure you can get that job you're talking about? Any place that runs your credit for any reason is going to kick your ass out the door.

Damn, I pay Sprint 55 dollars a month for a telephone at home that I never use. It's just an answering machine for telemarketers. :lol

Imagine if this guy gets a car .. he will never pay his car insurance.

Dude! Pay it back as soon as possible, or you can kiss ever buying a House in the future. Your credit will be shot to hell!

I was paying $>1000/month for a while, but I don't make enough money to sustain that considering I live in expensive-ass Chicago and I have rent,a car loan,a car insurance and a credit card to pay off. According to government statistics, my gf and I make more than the median household income and yet we still have watch what we spend. I can't even imagine trying to raise a family on minimum wage.

Seems to be like you have two choices:

1) Like others have suggested: Man-up and pay back that money. Find someone to help you when you do. The guy who contacted your work is probably a shuckster, but there are non-profit groups that help people who are deeply in debt. A google search will find you one in your neighborhood.

2) Start a new identity. This route probably suits your personality better. A couple of places that talk about this are:

http://www.totse.com/en/privacy/f-id.html

and...

http://www.about-the-web.com/shtml/reports/new_personal_identity.shtml

and...

http://www.ariza-research.com/new-id/

I wouldn't accept any offers from people advertising books or IDs on the web. Rather, just read for information, and make a plan that you can execute yourself. Frankly, I think you're best off by traveling to a foreign country and trying to become a citizen there. If you can make up a plausible story (which won't be easy, but again research is the key) and you're willing to be very persistent, you can probably get yourself nationalized with no other form of documentation than the insistence that you are John So-And-So.
So: Travel to a foreign country. If you can cross the border without going through customs, great. If that's not possible, use your real identity. Once there, abandon everything from your old self. Look for jobs that pay under the table. Live there for a while, and begin looking for a way to become a citizen. Having a job usually helps. They'll want to know where you lived before. If you have a story about coming from a suitably sketchy place, and a reason why your documents no longer exist in any system (you were born in Afganistan, for example), you may eventually be allowed in as a citizen of that country. Make sure your story of where you're from is a country you wouldn't mind being deported to.

Good luck!

Be sure to post about your progress on GAF. Only post from public computers in internet cafes, of course.

This picture? uhh I can explain really!
We're in a society where we're told from a young age that there is "free money" in the form of credit cards. That if you don't own a brand new 200X car or a house, you are worthless. If you don't have the latest electornics, a cellphone with all the latest features, and able to go out to expensive restaurants with your friends every weekend, then you are a loser. Unless you're the #1 man on the totem pole, accoridng to society, you are nothing and your life isn't worth shit.

Most of our parents didn't help alleviate this becuase they were bad with money and they played the same game.

That's why.

There's that route but, you know, people are way too lazy.

I could tell you stories for ages about the people I work with and the idiotic things they do to cripple their financial futures but it would take up way too much time and you get the jist of it without me needing to even say anything.

They can not only garnish your wages, they can simply start liquidating everything you own as well. Have a nice car? They can take your car and auction it off, they can can get your credit cards cancelled, they can do a LOT of things to make your life miserable until you pay them back. Don't think about getting a tax return or anything else because they will have first dibbs on any discretionary money and if they decide to take you to court they can get every penny outside of what you actually need to survive until you pay your loans off.

if your years of schooling didn't land you a job where you could afford a relatively measley $54 a month than they must have been a complete waste of time and money and I guess I can see why you wouldn't want to pay them back

You! You can still be helped! Start paying back $600/month instead of $531 if you can afford it. It will lead to a significantly faster payoff. I typically put ~$150 more than my loans per month just so that I wont pay quite as much interest and I'll probably increase that amount as my income increases.

Well, that's the problem, isn't it? For many of the 20-somethings I know, you're a dumbass with a fucked-up life if you DON'T wear $300 jeans that you lined up at dawn to buy, have the latest phone, etc. etc. Over the last ten years or so, the very defintion of what's "necessary" for a satisfying life has been completely rewritten--with most of the writing being done by corporate advertising.

Solid gold.

Also, what are these "under the table" jobs? Are there any that don't involve carrying a sawed-off shotgun?

Pretty much what I said above. If I could count how many times I've heard people tell me that I **NEED** a cellphone ... ugh.

You didn't feel afraid enough not to ask them for money to go to school. What's next, you going to ask the Don for a favor and then try to hide when he comes asking you to make Sonny look good?

Tyler Durden, is that you?

Seriously, do you really believe that? I can't imagine how people get such unfortunate attitiudes towards the U.S., as I've never felt that just because my neighbor has a nicer car, or my fellow employee gets paid more, that I'm somehow a shittier person. Sure, seeing someone do better than myself can make me jealous, but jealousy is just a great tool to be used as motivation to make more money, become better at jobs/school, and enjoy it all along the way.

Dear OP: Just to repeat it - pay off your debts, pay your taxes. Nothing else to suggest.

Do **I** really believe that anything anyone else has or owns affects me in any way? No. Do plenty of other people? Yes, unfortunately. I prescribe to the "living cheaply and comfortably" way of life. I never buy "new", I don't buy at retail stores if I can help it, and I'm quite satisfied with my life.

We've got a nice system here in the UK, at least we did back when I was a student. I think they've changed it slightly, recently. Basically I got a £3,000 loan and a £1,000 grant every year as well as tuition fees paid for. The loan is kept on an inflation tracking interest rate, and you only pay it back automatically to the sum of 5% [if memory serves] of your income above £15,000. So if I were on £20,000 a year I'd be paying 5% of £5,000 a year, or £20.83 a month.

I guess that pretty much amounts to wages being garnished though, doesn't it?
