Gone are the days of rummaging through card catalogues and dusty shelves.

A new library in Surrey, B.C., will be home to a "human library," with people on loan as living books.

The $36-million Surrey City Centre library, set to open at the end of the month, will allow users to "check out" people and pick their brains about their experiences with blindness, immigration, religion or a disability, among other things
. The goal is to break down stereotypes and start discussions, said deputy chief librarian Melanie Houlden.

"What we're aiming to do is bring the library to life for people. There are huge repositories of experience and knowledge in their own brains," she said.

People with various personal experiences have already agreed to volunteer, she said. Users will be able to request an "expert" and chat over a cup of coffee in the library's new cafe.

The idea began in Europe and has already been successfully applied at another library in nearby Coquitlam, B.C., and a local college, she said.

The funny thing is, if they tried this in the US it'd explode into a National controversy with the ACLU suing left and right.

"I thought I was here to tell you my story?"

"No youre here to wash up my windows. Cleaning supplies are at the store. You have money right?"

Interesting subject? You're "renting" a HUMAN BEING from a library.
For cultural enrichment over a cup of coffee, not tilling your fields and bearing your bastard children. Awful, awful thread title.

Let me rephrase, the thread topic is utter dribble and damages the seriousness that is associated with slavery.

Then again, you're probably trolling so hey.

Buddy, no one is forcing you to participate. Whilst the concept seems strange at first I can imagine it being actually rather educational, kinda like having a really cool, in-depth discussion with your tutorial teacher after the rest of the class has left.

No, they wouldn't.

Yes they would.

How can anyone defend any practice that allows someone to go to a library and "rent" another person.

Humans aren't objects that you can just loan out to people. That's what these libraries in Canada are doing.

What were the slaves complaining about? I'd be willing to be taken from my home country, shackled into a ship and forced to row across Continents in diseased ridden boats and atrocious conditions if I got to sit down for a cup of coffee and talk about my life experience!!

How could someone "rent" a person to teach them piano

How could someone "rent" a person to train them to be in shape

How could someone "rent" a person to process accounts receivables

Dear god, the ACLU must be drowning in all this modern day slavery.

This is different than going to someone's business and paying for their services.
