Captain Marvel sales are bombing, here is why

I tend to buy Marvel/Disney stuff cheap and used. I do like cult/horror stuff, so I do occasionally buy those and anime blu-rays.

Still stuck with a physical media mindset. I'm skipping out on Captain Marvel since it wasn't my favorite flick but will get Endgame cheap.

Congratulations on quoting a terrible website that didn't do any research? I mean, it's ok for you guys to hate Brie Larson but ... c'mon.

"Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel, distributed by Disney, dominated the home video charts the week ended June 15."

"Disney’s superhero blockbuster Captain Marvel was the top film purchased and/or rented on FandangoNow for the week ended June 16."

"Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel maintained the No. 1 spot on the NPD VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart the week ended June 22."

According to NPD, the June 2019 top 10 by units sold were:
  1. Captain Marvel (Disney/Marvel)
  2. Dumbo (2019) (Disney)
  3. A Madea Family Funeral (Lionsgate)
  4. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (Universal)
  5. Us (Universal)
  6. Wonder Park (Paramount)
  7. Aquaman (Warner)
  8. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (Warner)
  9. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Sony Pictures)
  10. Five Feet Apart (Lionsgate)

Year-to-date Top 10 (through June 2019):Aquaman (Warner)
  1. Bohemian Rhapsody (Fox)
  2. Captain Marvel (Disney/Marvel)
  3. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Warner)
  4. Ralph Breaks the Internet (Disney)
  5. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Sony Pictures)
  6. A Star Is Born (2018) (Warner)
  7. The Grinch (Universal)
  8. Mary Poppins Returns (Disney)
  9. Bumblebee (Paramount)
It managed to hit the number 2 spot for the year in less than a month, massive failure.

It's 2nd week in the UK and it's number 2 spot.

It's not doing gangbusters like Jurassic World, Ragnarok or Black panther but it's doing better than most other movies.

I own a bunch of discs but I rip all of them onto my computer. My computer is cloned to my TV and a 1080p projector so I can switch back and forth easily. One drive has 1000 something DVD movies and the other has 400ish blu rays. I put the discs in storage I don't even know where I have them all.

Hmmm actually I have never owned a blu ray player. ..
Did you ever own a ps3/ps4/xbox one?

I have a ps3, that plays them? I'd have to blow the dust off of it to find out... :)
Yes the ps3 is a bluray player. I gave mine to my sister years ago and that is what she uses to play movies to this day. The remote crapped out but Sony tvs can control it as well apparently.

Not sure who the first dude is but I have some D'Amato films (not Porno Holocaust) and only 1 Jess Franco film which is Bloody Moon.
Good chance I'd like to steal all your blu-rays. :) Rollin is best known for some 70s vampire flicks with lots of see through dresses. Dream-like stuff, some of it not too bad. Will have to watch Bloody Moon sometime. Love that era of slashers.

But anyway, how about that Capt Marvel. Marvellous. Trailer looked really like a superhero film.

People (even Myself) only watched this horrible movie because two single reasons:

-Hype after Infinity War
-Hype before Endgame (come on, it aired 1 month before)
In my case neither applied.

I haven't watched Endgame so far since it hasn't shown up on in-flight entertainment yet.

who buys movies
I have over 200 steelbooks.
As well as TV shows I think are worth owning.
I do have stuff digitally but that's because they're not available on Blu-ray.
Anything worth owning I buy physical.

Its a shit movie but come on guys the movie already made bank and paid for itself multiple times over. This is kinda sad now. There will be other shit movies in the future that also do well; its part of life.

I didn't enjoy Captain Marvel, but there's no denying it did well in the theaters. Marvel is making a sequel and Captain Marvel going to be in more MCU movies. I, personally, don't like the direction Disney if going, but the MCU is still doing gangbusters. It's better just to accept facts and move on. Maybe the MCU isn't for people like me anymore. It sucks, but it is what it is.

I bought it digitally since we didn’t see it in theaters and I’m not double dipping on the physical copy. Now once they release some stupid special edition with all movies of the Infinity War saga I’m buying that.

I do. But not often. I purged most of my DVDs a few years back when I shifted to Blu-ray, but I have built up a reasonable collection of classic movies. I really enjoy the behind the scenes making of stuff and commentary tracks for the most part.
Yeah I just got the Ghostbusters 35 anniversary 4k blu-ray steelbook
One because it was 4k and it included never seen before deleted scenes from the original found by Jason Reitman during his research for the new film.
I have Jackie Chan 80's and early 90's blu-rays that are only available in the UK on Blu-ray that have been Remastered and restored from a 4k master with multiple cuts and not some upscaled stream shit.

>no original audio track
>can have 83 different subtitle tracks
Sucks that companies don't even care about preservation.

That's what I like about the UK releases of Jackie Chans older stuff.
Not only do they have the uncut Remastered Video & audio but they also have original audio from UK/US and Hong Kong release audio
As well as versions of the films never released in the west along with US and UK cuts.

Smaller labels always try to do a good job. Big labels just put out whatever.

I liked captain marvel, it was a bit cheesy at times but it was more entertaining that Ragnarok.

Plus, I like Brie, apart from her being a cheese and a death metal sound, she seems cool

It's a bad movie that did well, I do hope Alita Battle Angel kills it in retail though as that movie while not perfect is actually quite good and deserves, no NEEDS a sequel.

Years from now a bunch of Marvel stuff will end up on a list like this.

Most people just wanna pop that corn and move on. Mediocre blockbusters sink into obscurity.
In the run up to Endgame (which i couldnt be bothered seeing in the end), i watched every Marvel movie, in release order, over a 2 week period. Hated most of them, liked about 4 of them. I actually liked Black Panther the most, which most people say is one of the weakest. It tells you all you need to know really. Forgettable popcorn shite that are vastly overrated because of the massive amount of Marvel fanboys.

The movie made over a billion dollars. Perhaps that's why dvd sales are lower. Not exactly a family movie/cartoon that kids will watch over and over ad nauseum. I would guess most dvds's/blu-rays are sold to people who have never seen the movie they are buying. Those who did see it will probably just catch it again on streaming or with their cable provider at a much later date.

Does this come from one of the three remaining Blockbuster stores in Anchorage Alaska?

Now I have no horse in this race. I thought it was a very mid-tier Marvel film. I honestly only saw it in theaters because I wanted to know as much lore as I could in the MCU before Endgame.

And I thought it was not great, but better then a half dozen other films in that universe.

Yes Brie Larson was a terrible ambassador for the film. Her interviews were awkward, she is a Hollywood kid who does not know how to communicate with the huddled internet masses.

But her performance was great, even if the film itself got a little silly.

If you are going to enjoy modern film, you need to separate your personal beliefs from the film itself.

Several upcoming films that I am excited about, have backing from some sketchy Chinese corporate.. the Chinese government.

If you are going to pick a war, pick it with the people financing the film. Not the Hollywood actress who may be a bit off base from your personal politics.

We just have to accept that a large segment of fans eat up the feminist marketing - including casuals who are reasonable lefties. I have many friends who eat it up without realizing the SJW pandering.

It worked wonders for Black Panther too - I ate it up and watched the movie twice and thought it was top 5 MCU at the time. Now I see the blatant pandering and plot holes more easily - but I still consider it a good overall blockbuster movie with a great soundtrack and solid acting especially from Michael B Jordan and Andy Serkis.

Captain Marvel I refuse to even download for free despite liking the idea of young Nick Fury. I hear they neuter him in it.

Finally watched this flick, good grief it was cringe. Captain Marvel just isn't remotely believable, her best friend seems borderline dumb, and they made Nick Fury an idiot, although his cgi was great.

It honestly felt like some college kids were tossed a big budget with high profile actors "go make superhero girl power/pick yourself up after you fall" bullshit, oh and tie it in with the avengers.
