Given the availability of the game elsewhere, the odd pricing structure, and planned downloadble content milking it's really the only excuse to shell out more than $10 for it imo.
Isn't the various DLC now included already in the 1200 points price ?

I hadn't heard, but if all the content is bundled as a single 1200 point download that does make it a lot easier to swallow.

from the nintendo downloads thread:

Along with the higher-definition graphics and music, Cave Story for Wii includes five new play modes. Previously announced as Add-On/Download Content, Nicalis, Inc. has integrated these modes as part of the full game, so there's no need for additional downloads or purchases.

Man, I can't believe it's already been a year since I last played this game and a year since I decided to go through the hardest section on the WiiWare version. What a wait! :D

I wonder if Pixel did all the pixel work himself for this remake? It would explain the outstretched development time.

I'm buying the snot out of this game. Also, very good OP MCGramr. <3

I wonder why the release date slipped a year? I know part of it was to do with retranslating everything (maybe), but even when they announced that it was still delayed moreso.

Pixel apparently did all the sprites and art, but the backgrounds and tiles were done by Nicalis employees, I think.

Here's a picture and blog post explaining how the process for the sprites went:

cs_ravil4.png

From left to right, the first image is an enlarged image of what you originally saw on the PC version. It’s also one of the options you can choose on the Wii version.

The second image to the right is what software interpolation looks like, but this was done by hand. There are technically four-times as many pixels, but the details is lacking and not what we’d want to see in the finished game.

Third from the left is pretty close to the finished product, but not quite. However, compared to the upscaled image you now see some real detail in the face, teeth and anger in his eyes. The tie has been given more attention and isn’t simply a 45-degree group of pixels, it wraps around simulating his wide neck. He’s starting to come together. But it’s not complete…

Fourth and finally is what you’ll see in the Wii version. Pixel added whiskers to Igor, he re-adjusted the eyes to give Igor a sort of feline look. Pixel also added more detail to his brow and also significantly changed his nose. The overall looks is much more consistent with the portrait image. Finally, Igor is complete and ready to take you on in Egg Corridor.

I wanted my virgin playthrough to be on my Wii, but it seems they spoiled the bigger secrets about the game:
Quote is a robot, the game takes place on an island
. that kinda makes me sad :(

Those aren't spoilers in the slightest unless you think that information that gets revealed to you in the first 10min of the game as spoilers.

1200pts is a little steep, but it's worth it in this case. Well, the PC is free isn't it?

I still think it's worth it.

Also, I realize I have no WiiWare or VC games! :lol

So I estimated I need around $200 of Wii points to get what I want. Man, so much money! Wii points, MS points, and PSN points...I can't take it anymore, ARRRRRGH!!!

I'm really loving it and it's awesome. You can clearly see the love and work that went into this game. The sound, music and everything is just so perfect! I just know you guys are going to really dig this game. I also love the arcade like gameplay that this game has and the bosses are just awesome. Everything just come into place so nicely. It's just made of pure win. :D

Grr, Nintendo. After plugging in my free 500 points from Best Buy / New SMB Wii, I had 700 exactly. Time to buy 500 and go! But nooooo, you can only buy 1000 at minimum, so in fact, I save no money. :-(

But WHO CARES!! It is Cave Story, finally!!!! Who would have thought that this would be the game to make me put down Demon's Souls? :)

Think I beat it the first time in about 5-6 hours. Very very replayable though.

Since some people still want impressions of the PC version, here's my thoughts:

I really enjoyed the game. It was only 3~4 hours long, but there were a ton of secrets and slight non-linearities that gave the game quite a bit of replay value, including a pretty interesting bonus dungeon (if you managed to unlock it). That the game seems to be adding so many extra modes for the Wii release is an awesome sign, but I don't know how substantial any of them are yet.

I'll probably buy it, but I'll wait for impressions.

What wat 1200? DAMN IT.

I only had 1000 saved for it, and won't be able to buy more points for two weeks ;_;

I can't believe this actually came out.
Hey, didn't someone have a ban bet going on that it'd hit before the end of October 2009?
Whatever happened to that user? ;p

A: Ha ha ha. No worries, friend. This thread has plenty of fruit punch for everyone. If that comes to pass, then we'll just have a hearty laugh and drink up. Don't worry if it tastes funny, that's just liquid joy. Everything will be okay. Nobody will hurt us ever again.

:lol

I played the ported to PSP (no not the commercial version which was scrapped a homebrew port) version, which wasn't bad. Fuck Hell mode, meanwhile. I don't know if I'd spend $12 on the Wii version just for a time attack mode. :/

Still, enjoy it. It's a decent "freeware" game.

I can only see the area in between the red lines. I guess it's automatically stretching a 16:9 image to fill my screen. Which doesn't make sense because my Wii's not set to widescreen and I didn't see a fullscreen/widescreen option in the menu. And it also means that the game's widescreen mode simply chops off the top and bottom of the screen, losing valuable information (like where the floors are) in the process.

Yea let's definitely hear from people on whether or not there's actually a widescreen mode in this release. They've said there will be enough times, but I can not find a single video or piece of media that's not 4:3.

Uh oh, I'm on a widescreen too. Will I have a problem?

Also why is there no co-op in this game?

Unless there's something I'm missing then everybody who plays it will end up losing a significant portion of the intended viewing area regardless of what TV you play it on.

Widescreen stuff on the Wii is weird, especially with 2D games. I mean, the pixel count is exactly the same in 4:3 as it is in 16:9 so you're always going to have to compromise one way or another.

But allowing setups which cut off the goddamned floor is not the way to handle it.

edit: I guess I'll have to set the Wii and television to 4:3 mode for this to render correctly? VC stuff does this automatically so I assumed Cave Story would as well.

Regarding your edit, I don't even know if there's a way to fix it. My TV is 4:3 and my Wii is set to 4:3 and I still get a chopped stretched image.

The homebrew PSP port actually had an extended 16:9 FOV. Pretty sad that a straight homebrew port that was completed by one person in a week turned out better than this version which took 18 months to complete.
