CDPR overhauling dev tools before starting work on Cyberpunk 2077

They're also hiring a ton of Director/Lead/Senior staff for the game, so I believe them that it probably hasn't entered full production.

Lead Writer: http://en.cdprojektred.com/jobs/lead-writer/
Senior Game Designer: http://en.cdprojektred.com/jobs/senior-game-designer/
Lead Level Designer: http://en.cdprojektred.com/jobs/lead-level-designer/
Lead Quest Designer: http://en.cdprojektred.com/jobs/lead-quest-designer/
Senior Multiplayer Designer: http://en.cdprojektred.com/jobs/senior-multiplayer-designer/

Well, only one of those jobs mentions Cyberpunk, the rest is probably for their other games. Especially that last position.

Lots of info in this excellent thread.

Among other things, they do have a sizable team working on it for quite some time.

"The team is divided right now," Michal Nowakowski, CD Projekt SVP of business and publishing, told GR+ news guy Leon Hurley at the show. "There's a sizable team still working on [The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine], but an even more sizable team has actually been working on Cyberpunk for quite a while right now."

Nowakowski noted that Cyberpunk 2077 has been in the works since it was first announced back in 2012, though he did add that it was "very early development."

You guys really think they haven't started working on the game yet? The title is false and nowhere in the article the dev says such thing.

Here a some quotes from few months ago about the development of CP2077:

CD Projekt Red hasn't given any hint of a release date for the sci-fi, open-world RPG (it's never even officially said the game's coming to this generation of consoles) but we'll hopefully hear more after Blood and Wine launches in the first quarter of 2016.

Life after The Witcher exists. We've been working on Cyberpunk 2077 for a long time. It's a completely different reality, set in the future, with corporations and morally grey world. Just to be clear: We already have the release date for Cyberpunk 2077 planned, but we won't announce it until we are ready to start the marketing campaign. At the moment we're concentrating on The Witcher and don't want to distract users from that product, which we are still monetising.

I honestly thought they were already working on this game. I'm so upset now but jeez I hope it can be everything I want it to be.

edit: yeah, the above stuff in Anarkin's post is what made me think they'd been working on this for a while.

It's good to hear that they're so excited about this project. Wild Hunt is an incredible game, quite obviously made with a great deal of love and care. I can't wait to see how Cyberpunk turns out...but at the same time, I have no problem waiting for something that promises to be very special when it arrives.

This just indicates its further away than we want. They've said they want to premiere the game similarly to how fallout 4 was done. If this type of change creates delay, might not even see anything until late next year, who knows. They can afford the breathing room with Witcher's success, I guess.

This game has been on my radar ever since it was announced and I've been dreaming about soooo many things this world could have.
Just getting the world right is something i'm sure they are putting a lot resources on. We don't get a lot of Cyberpunk games, especially open world ones so i'm willing to wait whatever.
I wonder how the combat and controls are going to look like (wouldn't mind they copy paste the controls of MGSV).

No? Because that was never the case?

They've literally never even stated a year of release for this project - the trailer was to attract talent for the studio, not the standard consumer hype machine. And even that trailer said 'Coming when it's ready.'

Having said that, hope this is all a bit of media misunderstanding and we see the game 2018 at the latest.

Yes, they did, in 2011. They said they would have two new AAA+ titles coming in 2014 and 2015. One would be a new IP. Obviously that was Cyberpunk, and the other (2014) title was Witcher 3.

Source.

They went into a bit more detail a while later in 2012, talking about forming a whole new team for the new IP which was in pre-production.

Why?

Even in the original CG trailer - the only thing they have shown - there is a message saying the game is a long way off beyond Witcher 3 and that they did the trailer to attract developers to the project

That was 4 years ago, one would expect that they started development in the 4 years since that announcement.

This is wrong. It can't be right.

It was announced in 2012. 8 years of dev time would be absurd.

IIRC there was a financial document last year that stated they were aiming for 2016 release, but that 2017 was more realistic

There's no way it could be 2020. That's just insane.

They've said they want to premiere the game similarly to how fallout 4 was done.

Shit, have they?

Well if that's the case then it could arrive at the end of 2016. There's no way of knowing.

Thats great they are all very pumped about working on it. I think its going to be an absolute masterpiece. I just really wish I hadnt even heard about it for another 2 years from now.

I will bet you all the bets that 2016 isn't happening. 2017 is iffy at this point.

It wasn't in development; the video/announcement was simply there to expose potential talent to the project and help staff their studios (and partly strengthen CDPR brand).

2020 might be a bit too far away, but I am fairly certain that at least in past year they have not had plans to release it this year.

No, there's 0% of it appearing this year. It's not in production yet, and production is likely to take closer 2 years. I'd say 2018 might be a more realistic schedule.

I mean, fair enough for backing up with sources but you still said 'Obviously that was Cyberpunk'. They never explicitly gave that game a release date, you're extrapolating.

I still think we will see this game shown in some capacity in 2016. Might not be till the end of the year but I'm pretty sure we'll see it

Edit nvm just noticed they clarified they won't

What are you arguing, exactly?

To be clear, I'm in no way pissed or saying there's something to be angry about here. Games don't come out when planned all the time, who gives a shit? And like you said, it's not like they came out and promised the public it was coming in 2015.

It's just interesting that they clearly intended this to be out in 2015 all those years ago, and now it's not coming in 2016, and I'll personally be shocked if it is even a 2017 game given the fact we have seen zero actual footage of it in any way.

From the sounds of this, the game isn't even at full production yet.

My best guess it's coming late 2018, side-by-side with TES VI, with a possibility of a delay into early 2019.

Yeah, it's a good showcase of how much things actually change behind the scenes. Basically all the staff they were hiring for the game during some initial concept phase were diverted to help ship the Witcher 3 and the game never reached much of a pre-production phase during those years. Not to mention that back then developers had no idea how rough, and how massively scoped this generation would turn out to be.

During E3 2014 Giantbomb asked the director of Witcher 3 on the status of Cyberpunk. He answered that it only was a stack of binders full of notes. Seeing as the studio diverted all its staff onto W3 at that point, I think that it is pretty early.

They may have masses of concept work and design documents, but they aren't very far into implementing that.
