So, in a video about a multiplatform game:
- He chose to include the 'Optimized for Series X' logo in the thumbnail of the video and 'Is this a mobile game' in the title of the video.
- He chose to comment 'I'm sorry Xbox people, I really am' while it's a multiplatform game. If he's a game engine dev, he should know that there is no reason to assume the PS5 version will perform or look better.
- He chose to mention Halo: Infinite in a video about Dirt 5

Yeah, it doesn't take a genius to understand this guy is generously taking advantage of console wars and is catering to fanboys, and giving this guy a podium is a shame.
That doesn't mean Dirt 5 doesn't have issues, it does. But the way he chose to convey his message is really bad. His involvement in game development is used to somehow legitimize/ give more weight to what he says, which is even worse.
Yep. He's just like...what's his name....Innocentlei guy or however you spell his name. I bet he was watching the botched IGN footage too, instead of the proper DF footage that provided the game more in its native display.

I'm glad these kind of channels are exposing themselves since it means one less source to bother with when it comes to content. There's better sources for non-fanboy analysis tbqh (and yes, you can have constructive criticisms while not delving into acting like a fanboy).

Oh yeah, fun fact. Innocenceii does the same thing Cherno does, i.e using their "position" as a means to try legitimizing framings of POV that would be noted as fanboyism without clinging to a positional badge. They do this because it cuts down on legitimate questioning from observers of their activity and the way they may tell half-truths, FUD, misinformation etc. by just trying to come off as knowledgeable.

None of this works on people who actually know at least as much (if not more) than these kind of guys. Unfortunately a lot of those individuals don't have YT channels, let alone YT channels of large enough size, to cut through this kind of stuff and critique the disingenuous-ness of these type of content creators.

EDIT: Also this is very much worth asking...are Cherno or some of these other content creators that very obviously are playing up (botched) DiRT 5 footage from a questionable source, as a dig against MS and Xbox...are they going to cover the Assassin's Creed: Valhalla footage that dropped yesterday? Which was also confirmed running on Series X?

I highly doubt they will, since it doesn't play into the narrative of trying to present Series X as a weak, terribly-made system (which is essentially what these people are trying to suggest without coming right out to say it). These people don't even have a fraction of the journalistic integrity or talent of gaming media personalities from the golden era. That's kind of disappointing.

He's a game engine developer who's worked on games like Need For Speed. You can take him or leave him, but it's a perspective on graphics borne out of experience that most of us don't have.
Fair enough. I watched the Digital Foundry breakdown for Dirt 5 and it looks great in 4K/60FPS. The 120FPS obviously isn't as detailed but for those who simply want the performance, I don't see them having any problems. Dirt 5 is a cross-gen multi-platform game and well, it's Dirt 5....not Gears 8 or some shit. It's looks great and exactly what a Dirt game should look like. If I was a racing guy, it would be a day one buy just for the weather effects and all the snow/rain/mud/etc. that gets flung around and shit.

Dude flat out admits he doesn't know about Rally racing and then starts criticizing things that almost always happen in rally races. I'm good never watching another one of his videos again. Thanks Cyborg Cyborg for letting me get that out of the way early.

Should've stayed with his awesome game engine series.
These reaction videos are just an attempt to capitalize on the console war and it's a bit unfortunate.

I've been following him for a couple of years now and I get that that first ps5 reaction video got him lots of views, but these videos (imo) do not provide much substance.
I agree. I have watched some of his C++ and Open GL vidoes which are very informative but not sure about his reaction videos. He will have to put lots of effort in it, couple of his PS5 videos got lots of hits so he decided to make a new channel.

Blame MS for not providing next-gen game footage of a 1st party game then. Ever thought of that?

Not a good game to showcase Series X gameplay. Latest build of AC Valhalla would have been a better choice - although we have no idea on what platform that build is running on. Xbox name is attached to this game now like a tick.

Poor decision by MS marketing dept.

He seem like a genuine guy and the game looks like sh1t.
He asked for xbox gameplay and was sent this.
Why are people acting so pissy? Send some good looking material and Im sure he will have a look ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
He's always come off as a pretty straight forward guy. He's actually pretty funny. He's done reactions on a bunch of different trailers/gameplay videos and they've always been pretty good whether you agree with him or not. He's pretty nit picky in a way that most reactors aren't and I guess that's because he was/is a game dev/engine guy.

I blame the viewer who sent him the video hahah someone send him a better video!

Still, does it change what he is saying? It is not the best looking game even as current gen game after all. You can hate the messenger but if the message is true, it is only silly not to understand the message

Cherno is a decent, straight forward and honest guy. Just see his other videos for reference. He critizised Demon Souls Remake etc.

He waited for good XSX video content and got Halo and Dirt. I mean what should he do about it? Good looking XSX games will arrive in the future and he will certainly give a good critique.

If it looks like shit, it looks like shit. It'll look like shit on the PS5 too. But he's reacting to the video of the XSX.

The guy literally was sent this video from someone. His channel is mostly his stuff that he works on, his engine videos.

Also worth noting it looks like he took it down unless this is on a different channel?

EDIT

Correction this is a different channel he has for reaction videos.

He does them for all kinds of stuff.

But sure lets push another bullshit narrative because people are hurt at him looking at a video that comes from IGN.

The game looks terrible for a next gen game but people are getting confused and think xbox is to blame for shitty development.

Just like when devs make a bad pc game for some reason people blame pc gaming and not the dev team. This game looks bad simple as for a next gen game

Look on this channel^^

Yea, I found out he now seperates his engine videos from this reaction/analysis vids.

His channel was all one with engine how to vids, progress vids, and reaction to things like Unreal 5 demo.

I bet if someone gave him some xbox Fist party video he would look at it.

I think thats the issue, is the footage thats available is either running on PC or a specific third party game running on series x possibly unpatched.

It's harder than real life, I've been offroading at high speeds for more than a decade just for fun. I think it's harder than that, lol.
Yeah I think so two, because one way how to say "it's sim" is to make it obnoxiously harder than real life : D But more than driving, Ai is fucking relentless, even on lower difficulty they fuck you up really easily. That fucking Swedish ring or how to put it, in begining of 1st game, I played it like a 50 times til the podium finish. And I was cursing like a mofo.

The icy tracks are the nightmare though. But it's so much fun, some call it the Dark Souls of racing.

I agree. Then we are going to compare it with SpiderMan and we'll just simply say that Dirt5 is junk. But we can choose something else to play, while the game situation on XBox seems to be rather underwhelming.

He's literally asking for good, cherry picked examples of Xbox footage so he can react to it. What more do you want?

i don't know why people are so upset he seems very fair in the video and its not like this is an xbox exclusive or something. Its going to look shit on both consoles, why are people so upset?

Ploy to rule ? Do you know game devs earn less than other computer science undergrads ? The freshers at the top of the game, who ace their coding skills end up with a salary twice as that of a game dev.

This attention hog, is trying to frame his occupation as rocket science engineering and justifying his POV. There are senior architects and countless devs working at Code masters and under whom this guy worked at EA.

His behavior does not reflect well on the dev community. Drama queen, asking where gazillions of teraflops have gone. He is no longer a dev. His youtube earnings are exceeding his meager game dev salary, He longer likes the slogging as a dev. YOUTUBE money is easy and even glamorous.

I'm not defending the footage of Dirt 5 he is reacting on, but commenting on the way he chose to convey his reaction.
It would be one thing if the problem he was commenting on was loading times. But he’s commenting on graphical choices the devs made. (I won’t call them issues because I really enjoy high frame rate modes)

this is inflammatory and clickbait commenting on graphics when the XSX has more graphical horsepower than PS5 based on known specs (note, we don’t have PS5/XSX footage of any multiplat that I’m aware of)

This is so ironic having in mind you are constantly bringing up the big DF ploy to bring down Sony.

I think you're reading way too much into it, and getting the interpretation you want from it, and if this is your takeaway from the whole video, you're doing it wrong.

I follow his work for quite a while now, and I dont think he's biased towards any of the consoles, he usually just critiques the technical aspects of a game. He obviously was refering to Xbox, because its an Xbox gameplay, on an Xbox youtube page, although a multiplatform game, we havent seen any other footage, so he can only judge by what is given.

It is clear his criticism isnt towards the platform but the game itself, textures, reflections and other technical aspects of the game. I can 100% guarantee he would have said exacly the same if this was PS5 footage.

His comparison to Halo5 is actually quiter on point, since both feature the same brownish flat ilumination and similar outdated look.

The game looks like trash.

If anyone is to blame is Microsoft, for having the most powerful console ever done, yet the only gameplay they keep showing are incredibly bad. Hell, the game doesnt seem to have any motion blur and considerable Vsync issues, it does really look like a Mobile game, yet MS is showcasing it as if it was the royal crown.

Is there a lower-framerate, higher-fidelity mode for which we can see footage? I looked around briefly but the videos I found look like the one Cherno used.

I still don't understand why anyone expected a Code Masters title to be a trusted graphical achievement. I understand people are thirsty for this content. But you really can't polish a turd.

DF ploy? There's a big difference between noticing that DF's Richard Leadbetter is biased (though mostly professional) and that Alex Battaglia is flat out a MS apologist (Halo reaction video) and pointing it out with plenty of examples, to what these xbox people here are doing (omg, a game that's on my favourite console looks like shit and a youtuber said it! It MUST be his fault!).

Care to mention where he's being unfair or biased? The level of detail does pop out at like 2 meters away, the lightning is shitty, the objects in the scene are simplistic, everything is mediocre at best. What do you expect anyone to say? To walk on eggshells and turn into a politician because some people are extremely immature about where they play videogames?

I loved the rocks that pop in at the front fender of the car. That is some next gen stuff. Why does MS keep showing off games that make them look bad? Save that for release day!

This game will be on PS5 also and will look identical, if not, worse.
It depends, while the assets and art are the same, the maturity of the dev tools are not. This has little to do with raw power.

I still feel like no driving game since has looked as good as Driveclub (and that includes GT Sport).

I'm after buying that today based upon that video you posted. It looks glorious.

I'd better like it, or you shall have to be.... corrected.
