It's still really weird to think about prices then. I couldn't really see myself spending seventy dollars on an SNES game [Final Fantasy III] then and even now, but it sure did a decent job in December of 94.

Dude.. it's been. I like your threads, but you always misspell been as bin and it's driving me nuts. Those Donkey Kong Country sales are pretty damn impressive, that's for sure.

Same here.

I mean, there are people that pronounce "been" as closer to "bean" including myself, so bin kind of throws me off.

32X flopped HARD.

Yowza, I didn't remember it coming out that early, what the heck was Sega thinking? These classic threads are pretty awesome, thanks a bunch.

The market really has expanded. Looking at these DECEMBER and NOVEMBER numbers, sales for hardware and software was pitiful during the holiday season. One title hit over the million mark and that same title was the only one to break 500,000..... IN DECEMBER.

This generation, multiple titles break a million or more and hardware is in the millions/2 millions. Great to know videogames are breaking loose.

And what the heck, when does the SNES fight back (IF if ever does)? I mean it's had Donkey Kong Country for 2 months now but still sold less than Genesis. Was history wrong?

I guess this is where Japan really counted.

lol love these retro sales threads, keep 'em coming! :lol

the software sales strike a scary resemblance of the early DS vs PS2 sales in Japan... :lol

The Genesis (along with the rest of Sega) fell off the face of the earth, or at least the American sales landscape, in 1995, while the SNES continued to sell decently... I'd expect that that's when it finally managed to catch up overall.

Note the awesome success of the first two next-gen consoles... :D (It is kind of odd to consider the Jaguar and 3D0, two consoles that were pretty much dead by the time the N64 came out, part of the same generation as that console, but they were...)

1994 in general was the first time Genesis outsold SNES since launch, and December 1994 in particular was the first holiday season Nintendo was outsold by Sega.. All previous holiday seasons were dominated by Nintendo (since the launch of SNES).. for some reason Sega really stepped up its marketing/pricing and even despite the nuclear bomb of DKC it wasn't good enough to win against the Genesis...

Agreed. Spelling it wrong on purpose is driving me insane.

No interest in these classic sales threads anymore...?

I'll be more interested come 95-96. 93-94 were pretty bad years of gaming to my tastes. A glut of fighters and 2D platformers, not my thing.

Why was Star Fox only $21? Didn't it come out in '93?

What!? I hav scaled-up the '94 numbers so many times and they're still too low?
How do you you know they're low, ior?
3.24m - SNES in '94 & 3.62m - GEN still too low!?
This is just the U.S...

So should I continue these monthly classic-sales threads even tho ioi's site has much of the data already (scaled-up too high tho)?
If I do I wannit to be monthly not bi-monthly. Bi-monthly is too much work to prepare...

YES, these threads are great and encourage some interesting discussion. It's fun to reminisce about what I'd like to think is the "golden age" of gaming.

I like them. I sort of enjoy digging out my old Nintendo Powers. :) Just don't expect it to be multiple pages everytime, though, as a lot of posters aren't even old enough to remember the stuff coming out back then.

I say go for it. :)

Hardware prices really help make up for it. Genesis at $115 and SNES at $120 were a steal.

BTW, taking into account inflation, the 1994 equivalent of X360 would be $235 / $313 and PS3 would come in at $391 / $470.

Also, if you want... I have a buncha 'classic' EGMs from the 94-95 era... I wouldn't mind posting some of the rumors for you, too.

Ah, that'd be awesome; why didn't you post them thru-out my other '94 sales threads?

I'd like these threads to continue. It's very interesting to see the software sales stats and comparison of hardware stats. Because back in the day, all you had to go off were magazines that didn't exactly report this data anyway.

Great sales for DKC. Understandably, it was a fantastic game. Played the hell out of it.

Interesting to see the Genesis was leading the SNES at that time. I had both systems but preferred my Megadrive. But for some reason I always thought it was the underdog.

Yeah you should, but I suggest you improve the presentation of it. The formatting is a mess and no doubt puts people off looking at how things have done. You could just print screen your stuff and put it up as an image if you want or put the effort into making the text better formatted. Oh and you should have monthly sales, YTD and LTD on hardware and software each month too. Oh, and be patient. Just put one a week up or something, every week, the fact that you started with one every day or so and the inconsistency in the way they were released killed the chance of better discussion.

Pointless to continue with a bunch of wrong data. There's just no way the SNES was still 3M units short of Genesis after Christmas 1994. It makes no sense. Regardless of how much we trust ioi's numbers, they seem to be more accurate here.

But yea, work on the formatting if you continue.

Donkey Kong Country: the beginning of the end of Rare as consistent high-quality developer.

Great sales for Final Fantasy 3, which, along with Super Metroid, made '94 a landmark year.

What's this print screen you speak of?

Why hav YTD & LTD?

I never said that's the case, I'm guestimating: ? means I'm not sure/could be wrong...
but looking at articles from back then, w/ch usually made references to the NPD when mentioning sales, almost consistantly had Genny ahead of SNES until '95. X-mas '91,92,93, & 94 were dominated by Sega, no one (that i'm aware of ) claims otherwise who's seen the sales, so the gap couldn't hav been too close.
If anyone can find an article from then that says otherwise then let me know.
I've already had to scale-up SNES multiple times & sometimes scale down Sega from the original NPD data to get to these numbers.

Okay let's look at ioi's shipments & try to estimate LTD sales in early '94:
GEN - 11.85m in N.A. (Mar/94)
SNES - 14.45m in N.A. (MAr/94)

So how much of these shipped are in Canada?
We hav exact data for N64 & DC so let's compare:
DC - 4.28m in N.A. | 4.008m sold in U.S. (NPD) ~6.7% for Canada
N64 - 20.78m in N.A. | 18.004m sold in U.S. (NPD) ~15.4% for Canada

So assuming the market share was similar during the 16-bit age:
GEN - at most sold w/n U.S. (Mar/94): ~11.1m
SNES - at most sold w/n U.S. (Mar/94): ~12.5m

Well these shipment figures contradict all news articles (& the NPD) from back then w/ch consistantly mention the Genesis ahead of SNES during this time...

*Updated the HW LTD on the chart. SNES now ahead.

I remember picking up LoZ and Final Fantasy both around that time, brand new at Toys R Us for 9.99 a piece.

You see the print screen key above Insert on your keyboard? If you press it it copies the entire screen to the clipboard. I assume your data is in some database, Excel or something. Open your data, press print screen, open up paint or some other image editor and paste(ctrl-v). Hey presto you stuff is in an image. Save and upload the image for nicely formatted data.

Just to get a better idea of how things are doing.

Oh, and those DKC numbers are monstrous. Last December the top seller I think was Madden which sold 775K at $38.30. DKC did almost double the sales at $58 a piece.
