The only problem for me is how they will handle online and the pricing of online.

I came to terms with the pricepoint when I sat and thought on it.

I think they would be better off marketing it as a beast handheld that can also output to a TV rather than a console that is handheld. That saves it from being compared truly to PS4 and Xbox and more compared to 3DS(which it is a big jump up from).

His stance is weird. I've never heard him speak to modern Nintendo games but he claims to love Nintendo growing up so I guess he assumes that lets him play the martyr when they do something he doesn't like.

3rd party support is critical to hardware success
EA announcing only Fifa is bad
hand waves Project Octopath Traveler
thinks Skyrim isn't the special edition (which is incorrect, I believe)
$70 Pro Controller is stupid
$80 Joycon set is stupid
$90 for a dock is stupid
online services are shit
people still care about achievements/trophies

Maybe it's just me but I think marketing it as a beast handheld for $300 + $70 pro controller/$80 joycons is worse.

He did if you've followed him since the Wii days. He famously defended playing Call of Duty on the Wii rather than on 360 or PS3. And Mario Galaxy 1-2 are two of his favorite games of all time. The end of the Wii era and the WiiU is what drove him over the edge.

yeah I saw this and he does a really good job of pointing out the implications of the presentation that are potentially positive and point to this Nintendo not being the same old Nintendo from before

lots of new faces were put front and center while your usual suspects were barely shown at all. using an industry standard as a means for charging the system, USB Type-C, instead of a proprietary one. ending region lock. main focus on big open games like zelda, skyrim, mario, and xenoblade.

I was actually rather relieved when Nintendo started showing off the motion, IR, and HD Rumble features of the joy cons. For a sec there I thought Nintendo was just throwing away their last 11 years of innovation and going back to standard controls.

It seems like Colin doesn't believe that corporations should be allowed to act independently in their own perceived self interest.

He wants to seize their means of production and force them to fall in line with the industry, so they can more effectively serve the public good.

He's not wrong. And Nintendo has been shitting their bed since the reveal of the Wii U. I hope people don't need receipts in that....

-Paid online play with a shitty history of online practice (friend codes, zero community, shitty E shop offering.)
-Paid App for online interactions.
-weak lineup
-Not convinced of 3rd party support.
-over priced peripherals.


The good news is, I'm seeing more and more people call them out for their shit here, but there's still quite the defense force that'll eat anything, say Nintendo only needs 1st Party to survive, defend their oppressive IP handling like YouTube exposure and fan projects, etc, but can't answer for why the Wii U is being lowered into its grave right now. But the good news is- Nintendo will be great as a third party when hey keep making shitty decisions.

Don't get me wrong. I love Nintendo. I want the best for them. I want them to succeed. But they'll fail hard at this rate.

I feel like Nintendo has made a lot of dumb mistakes with the Switch reveal, but Colin is just a blowhard.

Self aggrandizing and narcissistic to the extreme. Even when he makes good points he does it in a profoundly annoying and irritating way

He fucking loved Nintendo through the mid-2000s, even constantly says Gamecube is superior to Ps2. He fell off with Wii.

Was motion really that innovative? I can't think of a great Wii game outside of Wii Sports that I want to play using motion control.

I guess we disagree on how enjoyable it was to use that stuff, and that's fine, but I just really did not like much of anything about the Wii, save for a few great games.

Agreed. I was watching him talking about his issues with the Switch before the conference and was agreeing with most of what he was saying. Then he pointed to the Vita as an example to follow and wasn't able to take much of what he said seriously from there.

Haven't watched this video, so can't speak to the supposed smugness here.

This is me. I was about the write off the NS, but when they showed motion controls prominently, I decided I was going to buy a system right then. Some people don't like them, that's fine, but for me, that's not the case. More please!

Switch is big news and the guy wants views. Same reason why most of sterling's rants come from the gaf topic of the week. Can fault them for giving people what they want though.

I honestly thought it was a great video from Colin. Well-written and brutally honest.

You can't argue with anything he says. Now, how important some of the issues he raises is up to you, but they are issues all the same.

Colin has his moments and can be frustrating to listen to sometimes, but I don't think you can criticise him over this video.



But it does help that I agree with him. Nintendo have totally botched it if you ask me.

He also still sounds VERY scripted.

Yeah, leading up to the Switch presentation, I think that might have been the most excited I've been for Nintendo in years. I was so sure they were going to nail it. And instead, we got more motion controls, over priced accessories, old ports, online through a phone app, and a paid service that only gives us games for a month.

This is incredible. Colin worships at the feet of neo-Randian, libertarian bullshit. There's a difference between saying a company can't act in its own self-interest and saying that it's transparent that said company is gouging customers.

He needs to stop scripting these so heavily, or at least being so reliant on the script. The cadence is incredibly hard to listen to, and lines like "I'm not even sure where to begin" sound super weird considering he's reading a script he spent a lot of time writing haha.

Episode itself was good, it's exactly the viewpoint I'd expect considering his tastes and what he was expecting pre-reveal.
