Shipping Lists for Wednesday, November 11, 2009: Diamond / Midtown Comics / Marvel / DC / Image / Dark Horse

There wasn't a whole lot waiting for me at the shop last week, but this week tells another story it seems. Let's see what's out there...

SEP090132 ACTION COMICS #883 $3.99 - new costumes for Flamebird and Nightwing! This storyline is dragging!
SEP090115 BATMAN AND ROBIN #6 $2.99 - Batman and Red Hood -- and their respective sidekicks -- in the clutches of... the FLAMINGO!!! :O
SEP090139 BATMAN DOC SAVAGE SPECIAL #1 $4.99 - Azzarello and Noto team for a tease of what's to come with "The First Wave".
SEP090098 GREEN LANTERN CORPS #42 (BLACKEST NIGHT) $2.99 - Hopefully this starts feeling less like an afterthought to Blackest Night.
SEP090149 JSA VS KOBRA #6 (OF 6) $2.99 - Final issue of this miniseries.
SEP090401 AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #611 $2.99 - Joe Kelly jumps back in the 'Pool as Spider-Man and Deadpool "team up".
SEP090484 UNCANNY X-MEN FIRST CLASS #5 (OF 8) $2.99 - Last couple issues of this have dragged their feet, hope this gets to the main story before I drop it.
SEP090481 X-BABIES #2 (OF 4) $3.99 - First issue was pretty darn cute, so I'll probably get the rest of it.
SEP090471 X-FORCE #21 $2.99 - Necrosha continues as the island comes under attack from Black Lant- err, nevermind.

Previews of this week's comics available @ Comic Book Resources

...

About that 'The Lost Boys' reference, I didn't catch this one until somebody pointed it out on another board last week... apparently the X: Necrosha One Shot that was released a week ago (or two, for some of you) had a special variant cover by Clayton Crain. Some of you might recognize its format:

Why bring it up now? Well, this week's issue of X-Force will also have a variant cover... supposedly it's based on Interview with the Vampire.

Hope this doesn't mean there's a Twilight variant coming soon.

The preview art for ASM #611 looks like garbage. Hopefully, the awesome power of Joe Kelly's writing can save it from being a train wreck of gigantic proportions.

But im on the fence about the spidey deadpool comic. Im debating if its worth a pick up, just because I hate buying for a character, even if it is deadpool. UNless the book is just unparalled funniness.

Well there certainly is no accounting for taste!

My intended pickups this week:
Batgirl #4,
Batman/Doc Savage #1 (Maybe),
Booster Gold #26,
Green Lantern Corps #42,
Rebels #10,
ASM #611,
Vengance of the Moon Knight #3,
X-Babies #2,
and X-Force #21.

How is Red Robin? I've been reading a lot of Teen Titans stuff, and with Identity Crisis, I'm really liking Tim Drake. Also, my new favorite villain is Superboy Prime.

I have a question.

I'm listening to an interview with Joe Quesada from about a month ago on Geek Time (which is on Howard Stern's sirius channel).

He mentioned that all MAX books are $4.99. Really? All of them?

I've been loving Red Robin. It drags a little bit in Issue #2 and #3, but #4 brings it right back to life, and it's been great since. Tim's a little different (a little more brooding) in it than he is in Identity Crisis and Teen Titans, but the core character stuff is still there.

And if your favorite new villain is Superboy Prime, make sure you pick up Legion of the Three Worlds (the hardcover collection just came out) - he's a central character in it.

Well, he is wearing the suit as punishment, from what I understand, so that's fine if he's brooding. I'll try to pick up the back issues as well as continue from there.

I will definitely pickup Legion of the Three Worlds, but I might get either Crisis on Infinite Earths, 52, or Final Crisis first.

I need to get back into the Marvel universe, aside from Spider-Man and Deadpool (both are a lock for me) what are the books I should be getting to keep up what has been going on. I stopped reading shortly before or at the start of Dark Reign. I was reading Amazing, Thor, Captain America, Daredevil, New Avengers, and ThunderBolts.

I guess my list should include Captain America, though I could wait for the trades on that.

That picture just broke me in an awesome way.

EDIT: Also how has Deadpool been selling? I'm sort of worried about overexposure, but Marvel seems to be trying hard with the character, I hope he catches on a bit more than his earlier years.

Much better than the awesome runs by Joe Kelly and Fabian Nicieza ever did. In fact, it sells so well that DP has 4 ongoings and a cameo in pretty much everything nowadays. I'm just hoping they get Joe Kelly and Fabian Nicieza on one of those titles. Those guys are definite DP writers for me. Especially Kelly. His run on DP is fantastic.

Secret Warriors and Incredible Herc are fucking great.

Those two and Deadpool are pretty much the only things worth reading though. Oh, and JMS' final Thor issue, whenever the fuck that's supposed to come out.

Pretty solid week:

- Action Comics #883: This book needs to get a move on and get back what's supposed to be the actual story - you know, the whole getting rid of the sleeper agents thing. I was so pysched when Rucka revealed that bit, but they've barely done anything with it since the book's been so locked into this "crossover with every other Supes title" thing.

- Amazing Spider-Man #611: The interior art looks kind of crappy, but whatever. Kelly + Deadpool + Spider-Man = I'm in. And again, when the fuck is Marvel going to put Skottie Young on interiors for ASM? Mark Waid and Skottie Young would be a match made in heaven. It's like a guaranteed Eisner nom.

- Batgirl #4: After a rocky start, this book's starting to find its feet, and I think it'll end up being pretty great. It's a really solid idea to incorporate the whole Batgirl legacy into the series.

- Batman #693: Tony Daniel isn't a bad writer. He's just not a very good one. He's a great artist, though. I wish he would just stick to that.

- Batman and Robin #6: Thank GOD this arc is ending. The story's been alright (though not as good as the first arc), but Tan's art is awful. When is the comic industry going to realize that the Tans aren't prestige-quality artists? They should stick to mid-level stuff.

- Batman / Doc Savage Special #1: Now THIS is a prestige-quality artist. Phil Noto for the motherfucking WIN. Dude's got a great style - I'm mostly buying this for him. Azz is just a bonus.

- Booster Gold #26: This book was in the dumps for a long while (like a year), but it's finally back up to the level it was at during Johns' run. I dunno what happened, but Jurgens like flipped a switch and his writing is like ten times better now.

- Daredevil #502: I heard a lot of people dropped this after Bru ended his run, and unless you're just tired of the character, I think that's a big mistake. Diggle is usually pretty hit or miss with me (his Thunderbolts run was the very definition of hot and cold), but he handled this creative transition like a pro. If it weren't for the different byline, you'd never know Brubaker left.

- Dark X-Men #1: Okay, here's the thing. I wasn't a big fan of the Dark X-Men Beginning mini, but the fact is, I'm a big fan of Paul Cornell, and I want him to keep working. And since it's the same artist as Captain Britain, I know it'll at least be solid.

- Deadpool #17: This whole Deadpool-Joins-the-X-Men thing has been done before (in Cable and Deadpool), but I'm down for another go. Danny Way's completely owned the character for the last year and a half, so I'll always give him the benefit of the doubt.

- Green Arrow / Black Canary #26: Dear Andrew Kreisberg,

Please leave this book. I know you've got the best intentions, but... Well, you're just not very good. Also, this Cupid character that you seem to love so much? Ehhh.

Besides, you're making TV money on Fringe. You don't need this job.

Signed,

Karl

- Green Lantern Corps #42: Dear Pete Tomasi,

You're awesome.

Signed,

Karl

P.S. Sorry to hear that The Mighty is getting cut short after the initial 12 issues. Don't take it to heart, because it's been fantastic.

- JSA vs. Cobra #6: There were a couple issues in this mini that were a bit dull, but on the whole, it's been a fun ride. Its high points were arguably better than what's been going on in JSA proper at the moment.

- Luke Cage Noir #4: I'm mostly buying this to complete the set. It's been kinda bad.

- Realm of Kings Imperial Guard #1: Abnett and Lanning on their sequel to War of Kings. You don't need any other reasons.

- REBELS #10: Vrix Dox and Co. take down motherfucking Starro. Yes.

- Red Robin #6: Marcus To joins the book to take over art duties, which is great. The other guy was alright, but his style is a little too sketchy - it doesn't fit the story.

- Strange #1: Mark Waid takes on Stephen Strange now that he's just a regular sorcerer again. Waid went on iFanboy's Don't Miss podcast yesterday to talk it up, and it sounds really good.

- Titans #19: I'm just gonna read this in the store from now on. They're going absolutely nowhere with this "day in the life of" bullshit.

- Unwritten #7: More comic, less prose, please. I really love this comic book when it's actually a comic book.

- Vengeance of Moon Knight #3: I didn't read the last series, but so far, this is has been pretty good.

- X-Force #21: Reading this in the store since it ties into Necrosha. And I've heard this book's supposed to be halfway decent anyway, so I'll get to see what the hubub is.

Anyone else feel that the Superman books just drag on and on with some of these plots?

The problem is that one of these Superman books comes out every week, and they're all pretty much telling the same story. So even though each individual book will only hang on one topic for a couple issues, it feels like fucking forever since you're being fed the same stuff each and every week.

When it was originally talked about, Tomasi gave the impression that it'd be a series of long-form arcs. The sales have been kind of dismal, though, so they're cutting it short once the first arc is over.

I picked up the first two trades and the most recent issue, before this one, and I'm really enjoying it. It's dark tone is what I love about it, not to mention the art is fantastic.

I'll put up another vote for Secret Warriors. I scoffed at the premise, but I bought the first hardcover the other day after reading enough positive opinions and damn, that's like top 3 at Marvel now. Fantastic characterization and the artist is a star. And plotwise it's basically like reading a less ridiculous Metal Gear with Nick Fury as Solid Snake. Pretty cool book.

I don't think there's much argument to be had. Completely different tone, but it's head & shoulders above the main series, which is veering dangerously into hokey-land under Willingham.

Brian Michael Bendis, writer on Ultimate Spider-Man, New Avengers, Powers, etc.

And they're actually friends. A little over a year ago they had a "spat" about Creator-Owned Works vs. Working for "The Man" (DC/Marvel). They actually had a public debate, which is available online. But yeah, it's completely friendly.

Light week for me, just

SEP090103 BOOSTER GOLD #26 (BLACKEST NIGHT) $3.99
SEP090098 GREEN LANTERN CORPS #42 (BLACKEST NIGHT) $2.99

and the Agent Orange hardcover. The deluxe hardcover of Superman: Red Son is tempting but I already have the soft cover.

Super- books are in a holding pattern until World of New Krypton is over, and that's the problem I think. Everything hinges on the outcome of that storyline, and since it's taking so long for a resolution things are getting stagnant. And there is STILL no end in sight.

Shouldn't have made it a twelve-issue maxiseries, DC.

So, I'm listening to the Kirkman/Bendis panel and it's certainly very interesting.

What is GAF's opinion on this debate? Is there some thread where this was talked about here? Link?

Sorry if I'm drudging up an old issue.

That Cap/Patriot Siege art is awesome. I want all the Bucky Cap I can get. The costume with the gun is so perfect, like something you'd see in an old movie serial.

I have to say, it's not often that they redesign a classic costume and I end up liking it more than the original, but Bucky-Cap's costume is fucking cool.

The only other time I can think of off my head is Ben Reilly Spider-Man.
