What is Comic Jumper?

Comic Jumper: The Adventures of Captain Smiley (or simply Comic Jumper) is an upcoming action video game set to be released on the Xbox Live Arcade Marketplace.

Comic Jumper follows the story of protagonist and player character Captain Smiley and his biologically attached sidekick, Star. The duo must travel through four different comic books, each with unique drawing styles, and fix the comics' plots. The four styles have since been revealed and include: Modern, featuring bold colours, Fantasy, which features washed out colours and watercolour backgrounds, Silver Age, which is presented in cel-shaded graphics, and Manga, which is presented in black and white.

Comic Jumper is a side-scrolling beat 'em up where players have to defeat enemies in order to progress. The main gameplay revolves around using melee combat and aiming Captain Smiley's dual guns, though some levels give him other melee weapons fitting to the universe. Some segments require the player to shoot into the background.

Twisted Pixel continues their tradition of cramming as much free stuff into their games as possible as Comic Jumper comes with a Premium Theme, Gamerpics and free avatar accessories. As a thank you to Splosion Man fans, the game also includes a pair of free extra-long levels for Splosion Man, one single player and one multiplayer.

Twisted Pixel have been great so far. Loved Spolsion Man & the extra levels are a great bonus.

Here's hoping this is the same quality & is worth the extra 400points.

Looking forward to trying it out.

Over at GamerBytes I've decided to give reviews for games a shot. Not giant reviews, just quick opinions on a game that's come out.

Comic Jumper was the first, and to be quite honestly I didn't like the game at all. Loved Maw and 'Splosion Man, but hated this game.

http://www.gamerbytes.com/2010/10/gamerbytes_opinion_comic_jumpe.php

Other reviews have shown high scores, I don't know what game they were playing :/

Crap. I was ready to buy the game for sure, but now I've read this. Stupid habit of clicking every link on GAF.

I've been worrying about that Rlan, will try the demo.

Nice to see you give some opinions now too, any details on the Splosion Man content?

You have to unlock the content via an unlock, which costs very little, but you can't actually know which one is that content (they're all hidden, but are under "exclusive content")

It'll install, much like 'Splosion Man and Maw installed themes and gamerpics previously, and is a single level for single player in the actual SM game (there is possibly a MP level as well? I don't have a partner). It's a damn difficult level, took quite a while to finish, but that's about it. There are no leaderboards for the level.

cheers Rlan,

I'll give the demo a bash on Wednesday and see, the visuals already have me but I think it's really gona come down to feel on this for me.

I hope I enjoy the game. I already passed on Hydrophobia, would be a shame if I pass on this game, too. Definetely not getting next week's release. Game Feast has been a let down.

I agree with everything you've said there about the gameplay, but I think the humour carries it somewhat. As frustrating and boring as the gameplay can be, the cutscenes and banter between characters made me genuinely laugh out loud every time, so I could forgive it a few shortcomings. The gameplay really works brilliantly in boss fights as well.

And that special move, of course.

Looks pretty cool. Shame I don't have an X360*.

*You know, I'm seriously considering getting one, just for XBLA and nothing else.

I have this game, and since it's the 4th I'm allowed to talk about it. I don't have an article up for it yet, but I can safely say this: It's, hands-down, the funniest game I've ever played. It's entirely worth the price for the dialog alone.

It's a great game.

What's the download size for this?

I have the 1200 points holstered should I decide to buy but I'm unsure at that moment. Loved 'Splosion Man and The Maw but from what I saw, I'm still on the fence.

Don't forget that if you buy 2400 MS points worth of games or DLC on XBox Live during October, you will get 800 MS points back.

Like Rlan, as huge Splosion Man fan, I was pretty disappointed at the game. I mean, I don't hate it, the humour is great and the game has that personal Twisted Pixel touch, but the gameplay itself is such a letdown.

Looks...interesting. It might have some novel ideas, and I liked 'Splosion Man but I'm not feeling very eager to play this one so it's a not sure if want.
Oh well, that's what trials are for.

hmm mixed impressions further confirms my fears that this wont be worth the 800(counting this months promo)

will play the demo of course but if it doesnt pique my interest then i'll hope for meat boy to be good and pick up lara croft along with it

i found this game entirely boring both times i played it. i didn't bother to complete either play session (either by dying or reaching the end).

its a real shame because 'splosion man seemed to be constructed entirely around the purpose of the sploding mechanic and how far such a simple idea could take you. comic jumper has the same kind of charm and wit as 'splosion man, but without anything interesting in the game mechanics. its a (some would say sub-)standard run and gun shooter. on top of all this the A.I. was embarrassingly redundant and at least in one section of a level, the shift in perspective only made the uninteresting controls uninteresting AND frustrating.

while the changes in art style are great and their consistency of implementation in how the levels are built, the enemies you see, the dialogue used, etc, it stops being novel after about 2 minutes.

kind of a let down really. :/

Thanks for making the OT!

This game looks great. IGN's review is also up and they gave it a 8. They're saying the game is real hard, tough as nails.

I'm up for challenging games but I hope this isn't frustrating hard.

Still looks like I'll pick it up soon. But with too many releases this week like Shantae and Castlevania, I'll probably have to wait until later in the month.

This game is funnier than I thought it was going to be.

I didn't really find 'Splosion Man funny, so this surprised me a bit.

I really like the presentation of the story.

The gameplay is pretty repetitive. Hopefully the variety in the stages somewhat mitigates that.

I like Twisted Pixel and I love Splosion Man, but the artstyle in this game is just not for me. The character looks extremely horrendous to the eyes.

Which art style? There are four.

Wait, so this is a 360 exclusive? I haven't really been paying much attention to it, but there was a review in Game Informer this month and they had it listed as 360/PS3.

'Splosion is probably one of my favorite games among those available on Live Arcade... so i really wanted to like this one.
Too bad that when i tried it at E3 it pretty much completely disappointed me: the gameplay was just shallow and boring, and it seemed just not that fun to play.
I do hope the final code is somehow better, we'll see...
If it is i'll be there, day one! :D

Like all Twisted Pixel's games, it's exclusive to XBLA. At least for now.

Santiako said:
It would be completely worth it.

Indeed. Most of my gaming nowadays is XBLA only. I rarely get full priced big games (I used to buy 1-2 a month, now I am down to 1 every 3 months) because XBLA can keep you busy with amazing stuff for years.

Wasn't ported by them though -- that was done by Hothead along with Braid. Comic Jumper's actually got a lot of Xbox-based stuff in it
For some reason there's a Kefling on the table? and they mention Xbox at some point
. If it's going to be ported by anyone, it wouldn't be Twisted Pixel.

Yeah, you're gonna have to put me in the not-interested crowd. I loved Splosion Man. It did repeat itself a bit too much but the fun was there and plentiful. Honestly, I'm completely turned off by beat-em-ups. It's a done genre that never was all that interesting in the first place. Watched the Giant Bomb Quick Play and maybe chuckled a couple of times, but not enough for me to invest my time and money into. The whole self-aware comic book parody thing is also something that I think is just played out. I get it, comics are silly. It's too easy of a target.
