Link? Can't find this anywhere.

Also, Children's Crusade #9 is... there. Definitely not worth the wait, and for all Marvel was hyping it as a key AvX lead-in, all the relevant points were revealed by the AvX #0 previews and various interviews.

Yeah, that was very... meh. Too bad as I adored the orignal run of Young Avengers. Does anyone know if there are plans for another ongoing or for Heinberg?

After this series, he's lost all goodwill he accumulated from the original series. Can they finally give this team to another writer? Actually, he mostly gutted it and/or turned the rest into cheap parodies of their old selves so let's put them to rest forever.

At worst it was average. Still heads and tails over most comics that I bought this year.

God, I'd love to see Gail Simone handle these characters.

oh damn the new young avengers series sucked? Allan Heinberg was the man back in 2004. The O.C., Young Avengers, and that JLA arc he did with Geoff were all top notch.

Anyone else read the first issue of Manhattan Projects?

I have to admit to being a bit disappointed. The art is okay, but the big twist at the end of the first chapter wasn't really to my taste.
Don't Image have another comic out about multiple versions of the same central character getting killed off? This issue also threw so much "crazy" at us - Japanese war robots controlled by "monks", Einstein staring at a Zohar Modifier out of Xenogears - when I was expecting something a bit slower and more thoughtful, that it didn't really meet my expectations.

Children's Crusade will at least read somewhat better in collected form, so it's a good thing that the hardcover is being rushed out at the end of the month.

Damn so it is too off the wall? Disappointing.

Also what's this shit aboot Colossus being in al the AvX VS fights. We pay to see Avengers vs X Men, every brah on this earth never had a dream of him facing ben grimm or red hulk. we want to see gambit vs. spiderman, cap vs magneto and squirrel girl vs her father.

What I'm wondering is, if he's name is Shazam now, how the fuck is that gonna work?

*Shazam saves man from falling out of a building, flies off*
"Wow man thanks for saving me back there! What's your name?"
"ShazamOHSHIT" *lightning bolt, transforms into little kid*

If his name is going to be Shazam, what is the wizard's name going to be? No more wizard? I know Batson took over the role temporarily but that sucked!

So...what's with the blatant sexualisation of the [drawing of] female characters in comics? I appreciate the audience is largely male and so you want to have attractive women in the art, but this goes way beyond 'attractive'.

Another question/complaint in the art style is the depiction of the physiques (both genders) in that they don't seem to be wearing any clothes at all but rather had their bodies merely painted with differing colours to give the illusion of an outfit; why so skin tight? They weren't always like this. What changed?

1) that would require knowing how to draw real women

2) that would require knowing how to draw clothes

Go read some Runaways.

Children's Crusade was incredible. Completely worth the wait in my mind, and I really hope that Heinberg does something new (either with these characters or something else) in comics soon. I'm willing to wait for that level of quality.

These are tropes you need to accept to appreciate the hobby. It's not that comics are at all unique in this.

Hollywood isn't casting Chatting Tanum or Megan Fox for their acting chops. These dumb shits look good in front of a camera. :\

Kelly Thompson articulated the whole real women thing well a few weeks back. Framed this way I can dig it, and the only time you can tell which way a male hero dresses is when you're looking at gay porn comics for men.

I'd also blame American society at large for robbing men of their formerly attractive secondary sexual traits:

No, it's not fair to women; but when the social standard for attractiveness in men is reduced to hairless apes hopped up on HGH and all tatted up; then that makes it hard to indicate any sort of male sexuality in funnybooks.

The best we've got is Namor, and even Marvel has toned it down in the past few years:

He's still a frisky bastard, but he's in Puritan garb these days. The scaly speedo is a classic!

Not to mention I think he's just the only male character to really flaunt his wares. You could maybe cite that ponce Gambit, but he's covered head to toe in horrible 90's fashion.

In general male sexuality in comics, outside of pandering to the readers, is largely ignored. Bunch of sexless ninnies.

This is why you need to read Savage Dragon! He got it on regular-like.

I thought there were some real heartfelt moments in the last issue. It worked for me.

i dunno the last 2 issues basically killed it for me...just felt like a whimper...and for fucks sake keep the awesomeness that is doom away from the noob avengers thx marvel.

Throw me in with the group disappointed with the Children's Crusade. It was always about the character interaction moments for me in his last series. The first third of CC was great, but the rest just seems to be retcon first and setting up future Company's events second.

Oh man. Avengers Academy just stirred up all the right emotions in me. Getting to see these characters after so long, and having the story be so captivating. This book continues to be one of Marvel's very best, and I really hope that it leads to a new Runaways ongoing.

Lol, did you read Uncanny this week? Namor will still fuck anything!

What are the best Wolverine comics/graphic novels to get into? Always been a fan of the guy but haven't followed his development

Best Wolvie mini ever. It's really not up to debate.

Written by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, art by Miller.

Edit: I forgot this one:

Weapon X written and draw by Barry Windsor-Smith

Those two are probably the best. There's others but they're not on the same level.

And about following his development, you should concentrate on his older stuff first. Besides Jason Aaron there's not many writers nowadays that get the guy.

It's amazing how Marvel has handled so bad one of it's more popular characters.

i wish Marcus To was going to Birds of Prey instead of Batwing

then have Travel Foreman go to Batwing instead of Birds of Prey

i just want Black Canary's hair to be GAWJUS and Marcus knows how to make it happen

Fucking YES that would be amazing. I bet Marcus could draw the hell out of some Starling too. hmmm. And yeah, Travel over on Batwing could really work too. I have no idea what DC are playing at, it's like their editors have no idea of their artists' strengths.

I know what you mean about Dinah's hair though, Saiz really gets that just right along with the cutest noses in comics (which are then ruined by the colourist but what are ya gonna do...).

Have a total hard on for Ennis at the mo. Well for a while now actually. So, so looking forward to the next Boys.

But while I'm waiting for that, anyone got any similar anti-superhero comic recommendations?

1) because the artists that draw like that are idiots

2) tradition, mostly. As fidelity has increased so has the idea of "gotta draw all da bumpy bits (apart from the pee pee or lady parts)". It is, frankly, retarded. But that's comics. I personally love it when artists draw the costumes like they are actually material over bodies. I remember Stuart Immonen used to be especially good at that back in the 90s. And ironically it would be less work for the artists too...

I usually find that artists that over-sexualise their characters and draw a million muscles are usually working on the shittier books. It's a helpful indicator of quality a lot of the time. Eg, Ed Benes.

For attractive but non-hyper-sexualised ladies, check out Jesus Saiz's work on Birds of Prey, or JH Williams' Batwoman. I think Batwoman is especially impressive when you consider that he accentuates Kate's nipples while not over-sexualising her. That's a fine line to tread.

Don't need to read crappy new X-Men comics to know that. :p

100 Bullets

More Ennis:

The Unknown Soldier
Jennifer Blood
Fury MAX

For Wolverine I'd suggest pre-vagina Wolverine stories:

Just dropping in to say what's up. All the images on the first page are blocked at work (probably a good thing considering the title of this thread), but yeah I've basically dropped comic books and don't really see myself returning due to how costly the hobby is. I'll probably still swing by this thread every now and then to partake in the shenanigans.

In other news: MASS EFFECT 3! :O I got my Collector's Edition yesterday and it comes with a teeny tiny comic book about Aria. Haven't read it yet but it seems quite action packed.
