So it turns out I decided not to take the July OT off after all. Plans fell through, schedules delayed, et cetera et cetera. Things happen out in the real world, you know how it is.

...

I'll be taking off the September thread instead. Mark your calendars! >:D

For now, let's check out some of what's on tap for July...

In the wake of Age of Ultron, super-scientist Hank Pym assembles a team of androids, robots, and cyborgs to save the world from a grave new threat. Ant Man surrounding himself with a bunch of robots? What could possibly go horribly awry with that, he asked rhetorically.
+All New X-Men #14 by Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen (July 17). The first time Jean Grey met a Mastermind, she ended up sporting a leather thong and corset, going red and eating a solar system, and getting vaporized on the moon while her friends watched. Now, a time-displaced Jean is about to have her first encounter with another Mastermind... Can the leather thong and all the rest be far behind?
+Deadpool #13 by Gerry Duggan, Mike Hawthorne, and Tradd Moore (July 17). Last time, it was the 1980s and big capes, pirate boots, and an alcoholic Tony Stark. The Merc with a Mouth takes it to the streets in this standalone adventure, and is joined by the righteous duo of Power Man and Iron Fist!
+Hawkeye Annual #1 by Matt Fraction and Javier Pulido (July 24). Lady Hawkguy stars in her own adventure! +Superior Spider-Man Team Up #1 by Christopher Yost and David Lopez (July 24). In this new ongoing series, Spock buddies up with a cavalcade of Marvel heroes! But this is Spock we're talking about here; he's going to piss every one of them off instead, and everyone knows it. Also this month: Superior Foes of Spider-Man #1, kicking off a new series featuring a team of D-list Spider-Man villains!
+Guardians of the Galaxy #5 by Brian Michael Bendis, Neil Gaiman and Sara Pichelli (July 31). Spinning out of Age of Ultron, a new cast member joins the Guardians! But who is Angela, how did she arrive in this dimension, and what does she want with Star-Lord and his band of galactic adventurers? Whatever the answers, you know they aren't good. Neil Gaiman joins Brian Bendis to join his creation into the Marvel Universe!

+Batman Incorporated #13 by Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham (July 24). This is it, folks. After seven years, comics superstar Grant Morrison finishes up his run on Batman with the final issue of this series. Can the Dark Knight save the day one more time and, if so, what will it cost him in the end?
+Flash Annual #2 by Brian Buccellato, Nicole Dubuc, Sami Basri and Cully Hamner (July 31). The Flash and Green Lantern, together again for the very first time! Years ago, these two very different heroes teamed up to solve a case, and also forged a friendship to last a lifetime. What is "On the Bullhorn"?
"On the Bullhorn" is your opportunity to get on that soapbox that TToB vacated. Each month I'll leave this space empty, and it's your job to fill it, Comic-GAF, with whatever you want. Got a book you want to promote? A writer? An artist? Got something to get off your chest, a pet peeve or storytelling trope you can't keep silent about? Just want to rant for a bit? Then type it up, provide some pics, and send it to me via PM so I can post it in the OP.

Or don't, and this can stay blank. Up to you.

No one submitted an idea for the Bullhorn last month, so this secion remains blank once again. Maybe it's time to retire it, yes?

Spoilers. In the age of digital comics, they are increasingly becoming an issue in these threads, as the drive to be first to discuss the week's releases overrides common sense and good posting etiquette. So over the coming weeks and months, the members of Comic GAF will be collaborating on and will eventually be implementing a system of general rules for avoiding spoilers on new comics in the Comics OT thread. But for now, please abide by the temporary guidelines outlined below. And remember, you are being watched and judged by your peers.

1. Discussion of newly released comics that involves specific plot details shall be accompanied at all times by the appropriate use of the
tag function.
2. Direct posting of full-page images from newly released comics using the tags is strictly prohibited, and outgoing links to such should be accompanied by the appropriate spoiler warnings.
3. Direct posting of images or spoilers from comics that have yet to be released is strictly prohibited, and outgoing links to such should be accompanied by the appropriate spoiler warnings.
4. Covers, solicitation copy, and/or promotional materials shall not be considered spoilers and are allowed, unless their content involves specific plot details; in those cases, outgoing links with spoiler warnings should be used.
5. The unmarked posting of spoilers related to comics will be allowed after a period of one week (Wednesday to Wednesday) from that comic's release. (NOTE: Longer? -Spike)
6. Members of Comic GAF are expected at all times to exercise common sense and polite discretion as a matter of courtesy to fellow posters. I know, tough one.
7. If you are unsure of whether or not posting something would constitute a spoiler, err on the side of caution and use the
tags.

In short, don't be Stephanie Brown. Don't be... The Spoiler. For one thing, you're not that loveable. >:|

Happy reading!

As a UK citizen I refuse to participate in this thread until Captain Britain gets equal billing to Batman. Failing that, Union Jack. Not that Britain has anything to celebrate in July, but still.

Nice work on the OT as always!

Yeah, that's a lot of books. Wrote this up off the top of my head so I might have missed something.

And then Vertigo had to go and announce a new Milligan book, and Image started talking about new books by Brubaker and JMS, so my wallet will be hurting even more soon.

Another JL3000 Interview. Another "How does this relate to the Legion" as the first question. Another frustrated/frustrating brush off. Actually had a brief twitter conversation with DeMatteis about it; The lack of information is frustrating. For all these interviews all we've really been able to guess is that
IT'S CLONES
.

Would be nice to get some straight answers. "Sorry brah, Legion sells like shit now and we don't give a fuck anymore. Here is some Justice League." At least it'd be honest. But then I love this creative team. So. I don't know.

Oh, and missed a sweet sale on the Baxter (Vol. #3) Legion run. /wrist-ing myself right now for that.

In All Fairness - Help Comic Creators Get What They're Owed
I need your help.

DC Comics is a great company.

It was the first major publisher to offer creator contracts on a regular basis, allowing the men and women who create characters for DC books to share in the profits those characters generate in other media. You may say, that's only fair, but until the mid-1970s it was standard policy for comic book publishers to buy all rights in perpetuity upon payment for a single story. Writers and artists received no further payment for their work after that first check -- no money for reprints, no money for toys based on characters they'd created, no money for movies or TV shows or games or trading cards.

Nada, zip, zilch.

DC Comics changed that.

Starting in the mid-70s DC offered creators an opportunity for what they called "equity participation." With the appropriate paperwork submitted and signed, DC creators would receive a share of the profits generated by their creations. Like I said, you may think this is only fair, but in the '70s it hit the business like a revelation. And for more than thirty years it's given quite a few creators an extra bit of income -- in some cases, for some older creators, the only real income they receive from comics.

So, to repeat, DC Comics is a great company.

But, like all companies, it's a business, and its first priority is to reduce costs, increase efficiency, and maximize profits. So tracking which character was created by which writer and artist team thirty or forty years ago isn't part of their business plan. It's just too much work, and it requires a dedication and devotion to detail that only one group in the world has in abundant quantities:

You, the fans.

A personal note. I started this site because some of my fans alerted me to the use in the TV series "Arrow" of characters I co-created in the late 1970s, early 1980s. Without those fans I wouldn't have known those characters were appearing. I wouldn't have filed equity participation paperwork with DC. And neither I nor the artists I worked with would be eligible to receive money for the use of those characters. DC does not make payments retroactive. If a creator wants to claim equity participation in a character he or she co-created, they need to do so proactively.

Which is where you come in.

If you're a fan of DC comics published since 1975, you can help your favorite pros -- not just me, but any writer or artist who worked on DC's titles. Go through your collection. Look for the first appearances of any character, major or minor, hero/villain/sidekick/bystander from the years 1975 on. Download and fill out the DC Comics Character Equity Request form (you'll find the link below) and email it to the creators involved. Most creators have an active presence on the web, either on Facebook, or Twitter, or through their own web sites or fan pages. Reach out to them. Encourage them to file the paperwork you prepared with DC.

Help them get their fair share.

Obviously, I include myself (Gerry Conway) in this list. I can use your help, too.

Between 1975 and the mid-80s I wrote literally hundreds of comics for DC and created dozens of characters. FIRESTORM, JUSTICE LEAGUE, LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, BATMAN, SUPERMAN, WONDER WOMAN, on and on and on. There's no way I can single-handedly track down each and every character who made their first appearance in a story I wrote. But all of you working together, each doing one or two characters -- you can crowd-source it.

Download the form, fill it out, attach a piece of art identifying the character, and send it to the email link below with the subject line EQUITY. To prevent duplication of effort by fellow fans (and to claim credit for your help!) post a comment to this blog identifying the character you've discovered.

On behalf of all the DC creators who would otherwise never know, literally, what they're missing, thank you!

Here's the link to the Character Equity Request Form:

This is amazing, and I'll be pulling out my remaining longboxes to do may part. Some of the creators I've loved forever could be helped out, since the industry shits on them constantly. I've even seen it done in ComicGAF which is beyond shameful. The hot creators today would never disrespect their predecessors.

I think I was more amazed by the fact that I didn't realize Felicity Smoak (from Arrow) was actually a preexisting Fury of Firestorm character from like 1984. Just amazing some of the nods given that many people might miss.

GrandHarrier: I think you asked about the Movement in the last thread. Nothing about that book really interests me, is it good?

Issue #1 was OK. Issue #2 was pretty great. If you haven't given it a try I'd suggest you check it out. I think it has potential. I just figured if you were getting Green Team you'd have checked it out since (despite the fact that there are no direct links at the moment) they were hyped up together.

Yeah, couldn't resist it. Also grabbed a T-Shirt since I've been lusting after one of those for over 20 years.

The shipping almost made me shit my pants, but no other choice. Also, that shirt is fresh--still thinking over buying one!

Seems like DC and Comixology has added the ability to subscribe to a series now

http://www.readdcentertainment.com/

At a discount right, some type of program where you subscribe for 12 issues at a reduced price like they have for print issues?

*reads*

No. They just make sure to charge you the full price when a new issue comes out. I like this, it's very monetarily efficient on DC's part to make sure they charge you full price.

comicGAF is my favorite GAF. You guys have been really helpful getting me into the hobby. I think for the first time im startig to learn peoples usernames on this board.

Anybody else drop some cash on Zenith? I think I'm going to starve for the next two weeks 'cause of it.

woah i didn't know they were bringing Zenith back. I love that guy.

(kinda thought he was a little bit of a Nexus ripoff, but they said the same about Nexus..)

Honestly I only picked up Green Team because it's Art Baltazar and Franco. I love those guys. The book's been fun for the first two issues, so I'm happy.

Just read Unwritten 1-20... I think I'm going Vertigo exclusive.

YESSSS. I mean, you should totally read other comics, but keep reading The Unwritten and other Vertigo joints!

IDK if it's Templesmith's artwork or what, but I'm digging Ten Grand so far, which is not something I've said about a JMS comic in several years. Score another one for Image, I suppose.
