Condemned rocks...but it makes me sick

Dupy

"it is in giving that we receive"
So I started playing Condemned this past week, put in about two hours so far. I'm really, really liking this game. I'm a wuss when it comes to horror games so there have been plenty of scares. The combat is satisfying and I'm really digging the supernatural elements they're hinting at.

HOWEVER about 20 minutes into each session I'd start to feel sick. Like literally sick to my stomach, nauseous to the point where I had to pause the game and stare at the floor. This almost never happens to me. The only other FPS to do this was Turok 2, and that had to do with the horridly unstable framerate (even with the RAM pak). With Condemned it's not that the framerate is so erratic, but sometimes while looking around it starts to feel sluggish, like the sensitivity is momentarily set really low. I can't fully explain it, but it seems like it's done preemptively to prevent a noticeable dip in the framerate.

So I guess I want to see if a) anyone has noticed or experienced this in Condemned and b) if anyone has motion sickness issues in games. I really want to keep playing this game!

Its cause it runs at 30 fps and probably has a Field of View of less than 90 so its making you motion sick

I think we've had a couple threads about motion sickness in games, maybe it was in OT... for me I have problems with low frame rates (30 or below) and indoor wall textures, which don't move at the speed my brain expects them to, so I get disoriented. Happened in Doom (PS One), Deception (PS One), Halo, any PC FPS with low frame rate.

The only game that's even come close to this is Marble Blast Ultra when you activate the Gravity Pick Up, at least for me. I actually felt a lurch when the ground rotated.

I think it's the flashlight limiting your field of view. You're walking around experiencing a 3D environment, but the only parts you can see well are in a circle in the middle of the screen. I get really sick playing this too, which is why I gave it back to White Man after borrowing his copy for only a few days.

You may want to consider taking some Dramamine or similar medication before you play the game. See if that helps. Or just avoid the game altogether. Sucks I know, but you probably don't want to be taking drugs every time you play a game.

90? 90 degrees is hardly ever used in a game as it is too wide. 90mm is way too telephoto. Human eyes are around 38 degreexs or 50mm.

I dont think thats how it works. For example Half Life 2s default FOV is 75 and a lot of people were also getting sick playing it, despite its very high FPS. Vavle themselves suggested on the forums to change the FOV to 90-100 and problem solved.

I got nauseous too... deleted the demo and I don't know if it is all... but most FPS get me sick... oh well, I am getting old! 35 yrs. old... WOW!

FOV in 3d graphics is measured in degrees. 75 degrees is about right for an fov value. 90 degrees would mean you could be at one corner of a flat plane and see all of the other corners. Take a baseball game for example, 90 degrees would mean when at home plate you could see 1st and 3rd off the sides of the screen with 2nd in the middle in the distance. Way too wide of a view. It might not make you sick but it will certainly distort things toward fisheye a whole bunch.

it also probably has something to do with the bob walking (which i fucking HATE). Riddick is also guilty of the stupidness of "bobbing" up and down when walking, supposedly to simulate reality (which is just dumb, because it doesn't).

But yeah, a small field of view, along with "bobbing" and sluggish/delayed response control (see Rainbow Six on Xbox) will make many, many people sick (including me).

I have no fucking idea why developers keep on insisting on it. Stupid.

p.s. framerate (unless really, REALLY low, like less than 15) will not have any effect on you getting sick. it's all about sluggish control, head bobbing and low field of views.

No way, a $.99 pair of wristbands prevents nausea?? These I gotta see.

You're probably right. I'm pretty sure Turok 2 had the head bobbing as well, and going up ladders was like being at sea.

What a great game to be ruined :(

I know ginger pills help out nausea for like boat and car sickness. Don't know about game sickness.

They helped me get through both COD2 and Condemned! Great games that are totally worth playing through. I also got a little sick playing Condemned but these little guys did the trick.
Weird, Mythbusters tried those out and found that it didn't help anyone not get sick on a revolving chair. Might be a mind over matter kind of thing.

glad to hear another person's enjoying condemned, too bad it's getting you sick though. maybe you're sitting too close? the only game that's ever made me feel nauseous was return to castle wolfenstein. for some reason, i'd play 15-20 minutes and then get dizzy and feel sick.

hope you find a solution so you can finish the game...

Huh? Most pc fps's have FOV of 90. I usually try and bump it higher.
