I don't know about any of these newfangled ports, but that is NOT the right Sonic 3 boss tune for the Genesis version. That's what the miniboss music changes to when you lock Sonic 3 onto Sonic & Knuckles. The boss theme stays the same, and is correctly identified under Sonic & Knuckles.
Well, heck. Thanks for catching that. It's apparently been way too long since I've played Sonic 3 on its own (and I need to fix the labeling on my soundtrack rip).

I think I'm in heaven.

If I were to start going into an exhaustive appreciation post, you probably wouldn't see the post until 2 AM EDT.
That's fine, I'll probably still be awake then anyway. :D

Actually, there's a technical reason for this IIRC. The little opening cinema in sonic 3 where you had to input the code lagged the Genesis like hell. Basically, the game would only read controller input every 3 frames or so, so it was very easy for one of the 8 button presses to fall into one of those lag frames. To this day I can never do that code in any sort of consistent fashion.
This may or may not be a different interpretation of the same issue:

"See that you have to do the code using a special pattern. UP (wait), UP, DOWN (wait), DOWN, UP (wait), UP (wait), UP (wait), UP.

Since the Genesis controller can't press UP-DOWN at the same time, you will understand that you have to succeed pressing UP and one frame and DOWN at the next frame with no interruption!
(wait) simply means you must have at least 1 frame of interruption between button presses.

However, it is possible to do the code. I did this code with NTSC 60 Hz enabled in Gens. I succeed most of the time. I got the pattern from testing frames and key presses with a debugger, so this is the only way, and it works."

Just wanted to mention that one of the possible reasons why the US Sonic CD has a different soundtrack is that the JP Sonic CD soundtrack uses a LOT of samples.

The boss theme where it goes into "Work that hog to death"(???) was ripped almost completely from some funk song that for the life of me I can't find the title/artist of. There is also the "Good God!" from War. What is it good for? making an appearance in Stardust Speedway. Granted most of the stuff is either obscure as hell or hard to catch but all the same it's something I'd want to avoid(And Spencer Nilsen is a God so more music by him is always a plus).

Not that this is the sole reason why SoA changed the soundtrack but I can imagine this being a possibility.
I always love it when someone comes up with some Sonic trivia I've never heard about before. Thanks. I'll be editing this into the writeup.

edit: Well, I'd quote it there in its entirety if I had enough characters remaining to do it.

Well, the community isn't defunct, but they've moved on to Sonic Retro and the link I had to that post doesn't work any more.

Knuckles Chaotix soundtrack ftw. Botanic Base and Marina Madness are great. Man I wish the next Sonic game would pull an old school, and try to get music similar to that era.

Hydrocity, Scrap Brain, Chrome Gadget, Starlight, Spring Hill, and Metropolis zones ftw as well.

It's sad that Sonic's Brawl section didnt get remixes the same quality as the Angel Island remix. That was nice.

i love the old sonic music, i wish they'd go back to that ... this rock stuff aint cuttin it.
Check out Sonic 2k6's soundtrack. As much of a travesty as the game is, there's some truly beautiful stuff in the soundtrack (Kingdom Valley (the main version), Wave Ocean (both), White Acropolis (both), the Castle Town theme, the Sweet Dreams remix, any version of His World that's not the one with the fucking Zebrahead guy singing).

Yeah, music in that game was pretty awesome. I almost feel like playing it...not really, but you get what I mean.

The music in that game was practically the only thing getting me through the marathon Sonic 2k6 play session I pulled a few weeks ago.

I'm really not proud of having that "Sonic levels: Mastered" achievement on my Gamercard. >_>

Twinkle Park 1 is already in the OP. :p
You and your details about things such as OPs can go shove it, Mister.

I loved the compilation, but was disappointed you forgot my favorite track from Sonic Adventure 1:
Twinkle Park 2
I forgot nothing, it just didn't make the cut for one or more of a variety of reasons. You people aren't surprising me though, the Sonic 3D Saturn Rusty Ruins mention was the only one so far that I didn't anticipate complaints about. ;p

Listen to the two alternate versions in the bonus tracks section. They might not help get it out of your head, but at least you'll have some different ways to think about it. :D

I'm also really partial to Red Mountain 2, though I understand it may not be everyone's cup o' tea. I just know when I first heard that beat, I knew I was gonna love that level. :D

This thread is amazing.

Sonic Advance's soundtrack doesn't get nearly enough love. It's damn good.

And am I to understand there are people who dislike Sonic Rush's soundtrack? What the hell is wrong with you? That's about the closest we'll get to another JSR soundtrack ever again.

People don't like happiness and love. :(

Sonic CD - Collision Chaos (Past) - best song in the game >:|
Hmm, I think that song is one of the PCM tunes that is in the US version of the game.

Listening to both soundtracks again, I must admit, that I really DO like both quite a bit. The original is very catchy, but the US soundtrack is actually pretty atmospheric at times.

I was surprised by how much of the US soundtrack I found that I really liked when I listened through it this last time, especially a lot of the Good Future themes which I don't tend to hear in-game much. Quartz Quadrant, Metallic Madness, and the boss themes are unquestionably inferior, though.

Sciz, I don't think anything I can post can do justice to the massive pile of win that is your original post.

Needs more Sandopolis, though.

I agree, though I actually like the Metallic Madness bad future US theme quite a bit as well.

I have to confess something..... I love Sonic R's soundtrack. Oh, I agree that it's so cheesy one must denounce it immediately when anyone is within earshot.... but privately.... I love it so much :lol

This thread really has been invaluable! I've been on a serious Dreamcast/Sega/Sonic nostalgia vibe recently, and this thread has provided much of the soundtrack.

Hadn't really discovered Chaotix's soundtrack yet... it kinda has an R&B vibe, and I like it... It seems to be the last of the strictly hip hop Sonic soundtracks. I miss those. :( How come they discovered rock music in the 2000s??

Great great thread, although I disagree on Sonic Heroes music (like it) and Sonic's theme in SA2 (I like it way more than SA1's version). Nice work :).

While the primary purpose of Sonic was to drive the popularity of the Genesis/Mega Drive, Sega's Master System was still popular in some parts of the world, and they had a new handheld to support as well. Thus, Sonic quickly found himself outsourced in 8-bit both at home and on the go courtesy of developer Ancient. Founder and composer Yuzo Koshiro remixed the title theme (and its various renditions), level complete theme, and Green Hill Zone music from the 16-bit version, but wrote new tracks for the rest of the game.

By far my favorite sonic game. Quite possibly my favorite game soundtrack of all time. I have played through this game so many times and i still play it on a regular basis.

Every other sonic game i've played sort of left me disappointed because none of them have come close to this game for me.

Ah, very good thread. S1/2/3/&K had some killer tunes. Green Hill, Carnival, Ice Cap, Casino Night, Emerald Hill etc.

I also like Dreams of Absolution from Sonic the Hedgehog and Supersonic Racing.

Serious Sam is a wicked gahbidge series for chowdaheads.
You know, I can't really contribute anything to the thread, but I just wanted to say you did an amazing job, OP.

I will say that Seven Rings in Hand has left a permanent scar within my memory. Whoever had the idea to repeat the song from the beginning every single time you entered the main menu, an action that occurred at least once every 2 minutes, should be fired. Out of a rocket. Into the sun.

Crush 40's version is slightly better, if just because it is at least a little different.

Its one of my faves. I haven the entire Sonic Adventure soundtrack on my iPod and that gets played the most aside from "Choose Your Buddy ~Finger Bass" which is a version of the Adventure mode character selection screen music and the amazing "General Offense" or simply otherwise known as Skydeck 2..

All the original Sonic tunes are awesome.

The latest tunes divide people but I personally like Crush 40/ Remix Factory and the various 'guest' vocals they have on their soundtracks. Whether the game is good or not usually there is good music on the soundtrack - Ungravity from Sonic riders 2 - crap game - good music.

Listening to Sonic 2006's soundtrack made me GameFly it and that was a terrible mistake.

I'll probably get in a lot of trouble for saying this... but I had never really heard any vocal Sonic music before playing Brawl... and I think it was better that way.

Heh, when I listen to that, I have to mentally substitute in the constant rail-grinding noise from playing the level.
It just doesn't sound right without it!

Holy crap! So that's what that music was!
Back in '99 when I was watching all those Sonic Adventure preview videos, this was a backing track, and I could never understand why the song wasn't in the game.

Also:
I can't believe I ate read the whole thing.

Now you've gone and done it. I have to hook up my DC again.
