Who cares about cases? If somebody gets sick and gets better, which almost everyone does, that’s not a tragedy. It’s like your want everyone to be locked inside to justify your own fear.

You ignored several other things i pointed out - when we shut down, reopened, deaths etc - and didn't answer the question. :\
Case numbers was only one thing I said and I also said it relative to how many other states have had.
It's fair to say Florida is doing worse than almost everyone else comparatively.
I also think its fair to say DeSantis has done almost nothing to slow or stop the spread; I watch his briefings almost daily and he brags about how much medicine he's providing for those sick while not even doing the minimum like a mask mandate. (Masks being another thing proven to stop or slow the spread If you're one of those arguing that still then I don't know what to say.)

The second part is even more confusing : I fully acknowledge how rare it is to die from covid19, but I also see Richard Rose III tweeting "Im not wearing a f***ing mask" and dying to covid19 2 months later when he didnt have to die, and don't want that to be me. Everyone else can do as they feel best.

Look I get your concern. A mask mandate is no different than a mask recommendation because the government can’t enforce it. My state has a mask mandate and depending on the day, compliance is 50% to 75% where I’m from.

Florida closed bars and did a few other minimally intrusive measures was my understanding. I obviously don’t monitor everything they’re doing though and you live there so you’d know better than me.

This stuff can be scary. The best thing I can tell you is not to look to government to save you. Take care of yourself and be smart. If you’re afraid (and that’s all right), do the smart things we all know. And take care of your general health as much as you can.

Finland is probably the luckiest country on the planet right now

The virus is almost non-existent in Finland. A single flight brings in 24 new cases, more than Finland usually sees in a day. Government is correctly spooked, and with massive public support they introduce mandatory testing, and mandatory quarantine enforced by prison time.

Reuters said:
Finland will introduce mandatory coronavirus tests and quarantines for travellers from certain high-risk countries, the minister in charge said on Monday, after 24 of 157 passengers arriving from Skopje in North Macedonia tested positive for COVID-19.
Reuters said:
Failure to respect the two-week quarantine would be sanctioned with up to three months in prison or a fine, she added.

This will very effectively suppress the virus in Finland as the Spring wave was mostly imported from Central Europe too, and enable the society to stay as open as possible.

God I hope so. That would be a fucking miracle.

And before people say “but there’s still cases”. Herd immunity doesn’t eliminate a disease. It just makes its spread very limited.
I hope you guys read the entire tweet thread, btw, I guess I should have included all of it.

One possibility:

Russia says they might have a vaccine ready by September. Can you imagine how Democrats would respond if Russia gave their vaccine to the United States and helped restore our lives and economy? Democrats would scream, “Election interference!” And the people would be like, “bro, Russia just saved our asses while your crazies burnt down our cities.”
Ahem. Riots better stop pretty quick.

See this is just needless fear porn. It bums me out that people still think like this, but let's go through it. Are you obese like him? Do you have some condition like asthma, diabetes, heart problem, etc? If no to all that, then NO, you are not going to drop dead of COVID 19. And honestly, if you are obese, and you are scared of COVID, then you should be focused on losing weight as opposed to walking around with a dumb mask strapped to your face.

Also - would wearing a mask have saved his life? Honestly, almost certainly not, considering 100% of the mask talk is about how you have to do it for "other people", even *if* it is effective at slowing down transmission. In all likelihood he got it from a family member or friend, indoors, doing things that people consider normal behavior, like socializing and talking. Mask or no mask had absolutely nothing to do with him getting the disease and absolutely nothing to do with him dying of it.

If he is right, then "ordinary cold covid" is a natural vaccine.

His posts in threader:

Basically the idea is that peole who had "ordinary" coronas before, are resistant to the virus (not necessarily fully immune, but handling it better).
With estimated 40-50% having had it, he pushes the thought that 20% of population getting infected with Wulhan Virus is enough for herd immunity.
Referencing cases like Diamond Princess, Sweden etc. Cases are still coming, but death rates have dropped significantly.

Of all "no big deal" theories that I have seen so far, this one is the most convincing.

The kicker for me is this. The stay at home may have actually reduced cross immunity due to fewer folks interacting and giving each other colds. OOPS.

when was your mask mandate? Ours was July 18th but they said we were the first province to do it.
It wasn't a province wide mandate, but up to the municipalities, but I think pretty much everywhere has it now. Ours was July 17, Toronto was the first I think on July 7. Everything is open here again for the most part and cases keep going down, so it has to be the masks.

Israel just invented a mask they claim kills 99% of the virus even after washing it 30 times.

I was just taking issue with "Desantis did a pretty excellent job".

Today in Florida :
276 new deaths in largest daily increase

As for bars the mayor in my city said he wouldn't enforce it, so the most popular bars downtown never closed.
The first people at my job getting covid19 and quarantined for two weeks? You guessed it : Two kids in their early 20s.

Maybe a mask mandate would be hard to enforce but from what I've seen those with them are doing a lot better.

The first 4 months were fine, it felt like we were all together...
Now even my coworkers are posting regularly easily disproven nonsense about hydroxy, or just yesterday one posting that nonsense about legionaires from masks?
Maybe I've been in the south too long - 5 years now - and its like this everywhere, but the people here LOVE conspiracy theories with no grounding in science, fact, reality, etc. :(

276 Deaths Reported

The article referenced indicates it can be deaths from multiple days, as in, that's not the deaths that occurred on a single day. Depending on how delayed their reporting is and when they push from the backlog without the underlying data it would be difficult to say that this is useful to highlight.

I guess when I say excellent job, I mean he didn’t stomp all over his citizens civil rights. Some people are going to die from this. That’s the nature of disease. Crushing your population’s rights to stop a disease may not be the right response. The idea that it is the government’s job to protect you even if it means forcing you to stay in your home, is at the very least debatable.

As for the deaths, it was always the case that deaths were going to rise as cases rose. The question is how many deaths. Florida’s case numbers have fallen and deaths will trail that by about two weeks, if they follow the normal pattern. If they can manage to keep their deaths per million fairly middle of the pack, I’d say DeSantos did fine. Especially considering his state is the oldest in the country.

There is a lot of fear porn talk in this thread but its never directed towards the constant posts about the government using corona to take over and keep us in our homes forever. Seems like corona being a serious concern is much more likely then kate brown looking to keep my wearing a mask forever. Oh and for the record America never shut down like the fear porn talkers like to make it seem, at anytime any one of us could go outside or to the store or anywhere else that was open. Just wanted to point that out.

They hacked the Oxford Research Group a few weeks back. I'm willing to bet they have the "final" version of the Oxford vaccine and are blagging about it.
I would put money on this too. I would also bet that it works and that they have challenge tested volunteers.

That is why they are so confident and have already authorised it. The results of challenge testing the monkeys in April was already a piece of major good news. First phase results have been amazing. If they have hacked oxford, then they have probably seen some of the results from phase II.

With all that in mind, they probably just thought fuck it, showed the volunteers that it worked, vaccinated them, checked for anti-bodies and T-cells after 28 days, then proceeded to expose them to the virus, knowing with almost certainty that it would protect them. There has not been any reported side effects other than a fever (which is pretty common with vaccines anyway), so they skipped phase III and went the quickest route possible.

Wow the store

I guess we should thank the government for giving us permission to go to the store this entire time.

By the same logic are you ready to embargo or even wage war against China if its proven they are responsible to prevent this from happening again? Why would a country have the freedom to behave in a dangerous way that hurts all of us when individuals are punished for conditions outside of their control?
first point. China has yet to be proven of being responsible of anything, so this is kind of a moot point.

second point, and i'm surprised i even have to highlight it, countries are not people, they are not recognised as such by any legal system..otherwise USA would already be in jail for the whole "weapon of mass destruction" blatant lie before the war against Iraq.

third point. for all intent and purposes i'm sure many countries would somehow sanction and condamn China if any proof ever emerges of this being an artificial desease cming from a chinese lab...war of course might be a little too much of an answer depending on the degree of malice behind the whole thing...but again we are speaking of hypoteticals.

frankly speaking i didn't think i was making such a controversial statement..every single legal system is choke full of limitations to personal freedom to limit harm on others..in fact every single law ever conceived is the society imposing limits to the single freedom for the benefit of the society as a whole.

What’s the next goal post for all the doubters??? The data is starting to roll in and Sweden is so far ahead of everyone.
one thing to notice is that sweden didn't lock down, but his citiziens voluntary adopted restriction measures like social distancing, work from home and masks, according to the WHO

for some countries, like the USA, this seem to not be an option since apparently their freedom is more important than their health and they don't comply with such measures even when they are mandatory.

WFH and social distancing is true, but masks are not used here in Sweden.

Flu kills five times more than Covid

Flu and pneumonia are killing five times as many people as coronavirus at present, with Covid deaths at their lowest since the end of March, figures show.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said that overall deaths were below average for the time of year for the seventh consecutive week, while deaths from Covid-19 were at a 19-week low.

There were 193 deaths reported in the week ending July 31 that had coronavirus mentioned on the death certificate, continuing three months of falls since a weekly peak of 8,758 in April. It is the lowest figure since 103 died in the week ending March 20, on the eve of lockdown.

By contrast, 928 people died of flu or pneumonia in the last week of July, slightly fewer than previous years. This was the seventh consecutive week in which more people had died of flu or pneumonia than coronavirus.

While fewer than usual died in care homes and hospitals, 676 more died at home than in the average week. Experts fear that this is a consequence of people staying away from the NHS out of fear.

So far this year 380,064 people have died in England and Wales, 52,895 more than average; 51,710 death certificates mentioned coronavirus, including two fifths of deaths of people over 85. “The disease has had a larger impact on those most vulnerable and those at older ages,” the ONS said. “Some of these deaths would have likely occurred over the duration of the year but occurred earlier because of Covid-19. These deaths occurring earlier than expected could contribute to a period of deaths below the five-year average.”

After The Times revealed plans for the government to publish three separate daily death counts yesterday — all of which are calculated differently to the ONS figures — no figures were published “owing to technical difficulties”.

Ministers believe that the ONS figure is an overestimate because Public Health England counts anyone who has ever tested positive as a coronavirus death, whatever actually killed them. Although there were six more coronavirus deaths in English hospitals and two in Wales, the number outside hospitals in England could not be collated.
The bold is mine. We're counting anyone who has ever tested positive as a coronavirus death, whatever killed them. Absolutely fucking scandalous.

EDIT: one of the commenters makes an interesting point. How the fuck are so many people dying of flu when we're all socially distancing? It suggests that the measures actually do nothing to prevent the spread of viruses.

Every death statistic everywhere is about date reported. You can’t report immediately because of incompetence? Too bad, you have shit numbers no matter what.

AeroNabs: nasal spray that you take to ward off covid until a vaccine is ready.
They said they anticipated that the product would be widely available, inexpensive and sold over the counter. Developed by UCSF researchers. The spray neutralizes the covid spikes. Still has more testing to do.
