Clever attempt to flip the meaning of fear porn and how soft people have become to your favor. Good luck with that.

Don't want to look soft? Go about your daily life ignoring the doomsayers, enjoy it.

Asian countries have been wearing masks for a long time now and there are scientific studies in addition to hard data that shows they do not mitigate the spread of communicable diseases like the flu in public spaces by any noticeable degree. Want to respect the science? Show me, use the data to win me over because the power-hungry politicians and public health officials I'm supposed to be listening to haven't.

While I'm in no way advocating anyone do the same, I'm in my 40s with type 1 diabetes and went out of my way to get infected with this virus when a family member told me they came down with what looked like a bad cold in the dog days of summer. After seeing how quickly my body fought it off I can tell you that I have more to worry about every time I order from a fast food restaurant, buy vegetables from the grocery story or cross the street than I do this virus.

Unshackle yourself from the fear and live a healthier life.
Terrible post. I'm not scared, like at all lol. But nice try.

I stand by my comments. The constant fear porn of you guys actually acting like your locked in your house is pathetic. Never at anytime have we been unable to leave our homes. Get some thicker skin already good lord.
Yeah guys. Grow some thicker skin. Stop with the fear porn. You can go anywhere you want.... well except all those places you can’t go.

But whatever. He stands by his comments. Regardless of the facts laid out before him. He’s dug in. And he’ll never change.

Yup. It's sad, Americans inability to do a couple extremely small things like wear masks and social distance has proven to be fatal. Covid isn't the end of the world, Im quite literally not scared for myself at all, I'm very healthy and active. But there is no reason we can't beat this as a nation better then we are. Its pathetic.

If only those things actually stopped a contagious virus.

They don't.

Of course they do lol. And for the record I'm also against sweeping shutdowns. I don't think its required to beat covid but I also don't think Kate Brown wants me in a mask in my living room for the rest of my life.

No, they don't. They objectively don't, which is why Australia and parts of Europe are going back into shutdown modes. The virus enters a population, does what it does, and burns itself out once it runs out of people to infect. That is how it goes. This is why California saw a month of exponential case growth after the mask mandate, only to decline on the same time frame as other states with varied implementation of those measures. Wearing a mask that can't stop the virus from entering or exiting is just for show.

Ok sorry, it won't eliminate the virus I assume we all know that. But masks and social distancing is all we really need to do to limit un necessary deaths. That's why everytime strict mask orders go into effect a couple weeks later cases go down and eventually deaths. Speed running this virus trying to get herd immunity would certainly mean hundreds of thousands of un needed deaths.

No they don't. Again, California.

I don't know what "unneeded" or "unnecessary" deaths are. The vast majority of deaths from this (95%+) are very old people with significant existing health problems. People who were probably going to kick it in the next 6-12 months anyway. Obviously if their deaths can be prevented they should be, but we aren't talking about polio here. I think it is also incumbent upon people to recognize when they may expose a person in a risky cohort and take their own precautions without demanding that every single person wear an unnecessary mask or avoid all human contact. It is how we have always done things.

Well fortunately for all of us people with your opinions don't actually make decisions since even red states have gad mask mandates when needed. Its just common sense the slower the spread is the easier it can be dealt with, but common sense is lacking these days.

"Denmark’s health authority has discouraged mask wearing for healthy people going about their normal lives, questioning its effectiveness and saying it “can cause more harm than good.” There have been concerns that people who cover their mouth and nose may let down their guard or that face coverings may even become a vector for the virus if mishandled."

Denmark - no mask recommendation.

I agree healthy people without the virus shouldn't have to wear one. Unfortunately we don't know who is healthy and without the virus, but congrats on finding 1.

But there's less wiggle room and more exaggeration for the question about number of COVID deaths. Here the estimates are at least 100 times as high as the number of actual deaths in these five countries, with public opinion 225 times too high in the US and 300 times too high in Germany.

You are strawmaning my position or else not reading closely. I said IF. I posed the question cause I wanted to understand whether or not you have a double standard regarding morality or rights when it comes to individuals vs nations.

At the end of the day law is enforced with violence. If I get together with a group of like minded friends who don't want vaccines and we form a militia to protect our freedom will you advocate the police/army open fire on us? Will you pull the trigger? Will you risk your life to make sure I am vaccinated?
law is enforced with power, not violence.

and to answer your question, no i'm not gonna shoot you to stop you from killing yourself, that would be moronic.

i would endorse for society to confine you and your militia on your own so that you are not harming others though

if you want so hard to go against society, you would also be ready to live outside of it, are you not?

Had to cancel this. They had more people painting BLM on the street though.

Every 2 days covid kills as many Americans as 9/11 did. I think we can handle a couple lights not being turned on. And considering we are still screwing 1st responders from all the shit they inhaled from trying to save people that day I say its best to not risk any more lives for no reason.

There is no unclaimed land on earth. There is no "outside of society." Law is enforced with violence or the threat of it. I'm not gonna die from Corona, I'll be just fine. If any hot chick's, I mean any chicks that are not hideous have corona I'll volunteer to let them spit directly in my mouth. That's how little I fear Corona.

young People just said they got used to the numbers, " 100? 400? Ahh the same".

you don't have to be physically outside of a society to be, well, outside of the society.
what if the owners of the shops in your town decide they don't wanna serve you and your likely minded individuals anymore because they don't wanna risk catching covid? where are you gonna get food ? grown your own? and with what fields and what know-how (assuming you are not currently a farmer, i don't know you)

law is nothing other than the price to partecipate in society.

keep your behavior straight and follow the rules, you will get the benefits of being in the society, go astray from the right way, and you get expelled from it (sometimes literally, like jail time, sometimes just metaforically)

if you think the only thing that keeps society straight is gunpowder, i think you have a lot to learn about both law and power.

It's gunpowder, men with sticks to beat you with, and jails. Plenty of people don't believe Coronavirus is a big deal but shut down their business anyways cause they fear the government. These people would love to run a normal business but don't want to go to jail.

Your understanding of society is disingenuous. Government is defined in economics as the organization in a geographic area that has a monopoly on the legitimate use of force. You are pretending not to understand for some strange reason that a large portion of people hate the government and would not obey its laws or pay It's taxes except that they fear the government will use force against them.

New COVID-19 deaths, yesterday:

France: 18
Australia: 14
Spain: 12
UK: 11
Japan: 10
Germany: 8
Canada: 5

USA: 1,120

Yea. Seeing some of the responses in this thread it's no surprise. The leadership of those countries followed the science. Mine left the heavy lifting to the under-resourced states, peddled miracle cures, played golf, and obsessed over TikTok. We're in for a long, long fight here.

Please never again in your life make the mistake of looking at absolute numbers without context. Don't be as stupid as many "experts" or the media. If you can't interpret statistics correctly, they're worthless, but unfortunately still an effective way to influence people who cannot or do not want to think for themselves. A lot of assholes and the media naturally know this, politicize it and take advantage of it.

Spain and the UK, for example, have a higher death rate per 100,000 inhabitants. Belgium, Italy and some others as well. Especially countries like Italy were the first to impose the probably hardest and longest lockdown. Nevertheless they are worse off than the US.

I myself am surprised that the US has so few deaths, since it is known to be one of the countries with the most chronically ill and overweight people.

One should caution not to cherry pick data or only focus on one criteria, such as "death rate per 100,000 inhabitants".

Here's some context - COVID deaths among some of the most populous countries:

Psst: Both China and India have far, far more inhabitants than the United States

Edit: I just noticed it plotted Indonesia when I chose Brazil, lol. Anyway, I did it again and while Brazil looks bad too they're still well beneath the US

I can tell you Canada didnt do anything different then the states aside from not having 10 weeks of race riots.

Provinces like the states did their own thing. There was no grand national statgey from Truedope. Masks were not mandated till end of July. Borders werent closed till US said so. Late on Travel bans. We had such a huge problem in LTCs we had to send in the military.

Long term care facility. Old age homes.

In Quebec 80% of our deaths were in these homes. One home 30 people died and not all from Covid. Some were found dead in their own shit because it was abandoned by workers.

Military was sent in to help and our PM went on TV and begged people to go work there.

What does this have to do with cherry picking? X deaths per Y inhabitant is one of the few clear statistical indicators that also have a meaningful value without the need for endless interpretation or parallel consideration of other numbers.

Case reports, counting methods, economy, demography, social structures, religion, culture and many other factors also have an huge influence. Have you already adjusted the figures accordingly? Unfortunately, I don't know of any study that has done that.

Some people only see what they want to see. This whole discussion is moronic anyway, because the US states alone decide when and which measures they introduce. Democratically led states, states where many don't think much of Trump, have more cases on average. But yes, of course Trump is to blame.
I'm not even saying that Trump is leading the country well and successfully through the Corona crisis. He sure as hell isn't. But this stupid black and white thinking is SO FUCKING stupid and annoying.

Psst, we're in this mess because of the Chinese Communist Party. They were hiding information, hoarding PPE supplies from around the world, silencing anyone that dared speak up, left international travel from Wuhan open long after they shut down domestic travel, denied the international community the opportunity to investigate and kicked reporters from several major news outlets out of their country - you still trust them to be transparent with their case numbers after that?

Taking the data as a whole, and then only analyzing it through the narrow lens of "Deaths per 100,000 inhabitants" or whatever. I put it into perspective in my graph. India has 1.35bn people, the US 323m, and yet India has 49k deaths while the US has 168k. The numbers look worse in comparison with other countries but I figured I'd use India in this example since they have so many people and aren't even fully developed yet.

You say it simplifies things, but you don't want to simplify results in this case unless you want to focus on a specific portion of a given population for some reason - such as studying why mortality rates are higher for portion of pop x over y, etc.

Yea, I'm well aware of all that. China should have shut down travel ahead of Chinese New Year. Or in the very least performed symptom testing, such as fever, at the airports. As for reporting, they probably under reported some, it's the CCP, but this isn't their first outbreak. Once they began their reaction they wen't full force and squashed it. They were even able to safely reopen theme parks and theaters already. They're doing OK. It's clear they never had the runaway deaths we had.

All of that has nothing to do with the poor federal response in the US, though.

I cant belive how many people refuse to believe science and facts right in front of them. 200k+ excessive deaths in America, and it isn't even the fall yet. We need a leader to unite us and move forward, this constant fighting and acting like a baby is killing Americans. The buck is supposed to stop with him but he refuses to take responsibility for anything ever. Terible leader in all regards, and we pay the price unfortunately.

I'm tired of these pointless discussions where people constantly pick out a single counter-argument, just look at it in isolation and pretend to argue against it. Where do you learn this shit? If you answer me, then look at my entire post and don't take just a partial statement without context and ignore the rest to create your own narrative. This isn't CNN.

I've had enough of this garbage.

See the posts above or just ignore the objective reality.

Other apparently more successful countries have significantly worse figures. Since you bring Trump into play: Most cases and deaths occur in democratically led states that don't give a shit about Trump. The states decide all alone what they do for and against the virus.

And just to be clear. I would say the exact same thing if the current president was Biden or Hillary Clinton. If you want to politicize an issue, go ahead. But then you should take the effort to search out objective facts, understand them and use them to prove your argumentation. Unfortunately it just never happens.

Good, because you're rejecting any information that isn't confirming to your desired narrative. It would probably be healthier for you to walk away if you're not going to be accepting of information that proves you wrong. I showed you how cheery picking data made your conclusion pointless and doesn't lead to any meaningful data. But you then stuck to your guns. So anyway, have fun.

My bone to pick with trump is the fact that he refuses to unite and actually lead the country when we NEED a leader clearly. I dont need any proof to back that up its obvious for us all to see. He spends more time saying it's fake and making up stats that don't matter then he does actually trying to fix things. He is a terrible leader period.

Yeah but it's much harder for grifter pastors to take all their money when they don't have that collection plate to pass around every service. Church is just a $ and power grab is all. Tax them!
I can sympathize with the church goers who are devote and feel the need to worship in person, but this just isn't the time. I too lay the blame on the churches themselves. They hold the influence. If they truly cared for their congregations they'd caution safety. Especially the many churches that already own the land their church sits on and don't have a mortgage. They already don't have to pay any taxes.
