You can’t really ban the press from a townhall open to the public. It sounds like her intentions were good, but her inexperience is showing. I don’t think this is worth much outrage. It strikes me as more of a minor mistake. I say this as someone who is not a fan of hers.

I approve.
She should save her bullets to much closer to the mid term elections n November.
That way she will have a much bigger and lasting impact.

She's just inexperienced and a bit too excited.
I think it's kinda funny how much the media and the internet focuses on her like she matters that much.
Well, she is very important and has a huge profile in american politics right now. Like it or nor.

She is a Socialist, self admitted and what not, and you can bet that the right will push super hard on that fact.
"Will you vote for a communist?" et al

That is a strong message especially since >>90% of the US voters have a STRONG dislike towards socialists/communists.
Or is it >99% Who knows and who cares. Matters not.

When real politiks come into play and reality start to matter. To preserve themselves, the DNC will have to bernie her.. Sad but true.
Her supporters will learn how bernie supporters felt But politics is a game where you aim to win and when your master points where you should
march you march there only asking "how long do I march"..

Identity politics in a nutshell..

"This town hall was designed for residents to feel safe discussing sensitive issues in a threatening political time. "

Feel safe = "I don't want my political opinions to be challenged"
Sensitive issues = White people blaming
Threatening political time = "There are people out there that doesn't have the same opinion as me"

Yeah, it's not like Dems have been calling her "the future of our party" or anything...

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/395436-dnc-chair-ocasio-cortez-represents-the-future-of-our-party

I love how people are attempting to make Ocasio-Cortez's rising popularity some kind of "right wind conspiracy" now that she's out in the open and is getting flayed.

Obama booted a LGBT press member for continuously yelling "no more deportations" during a LGBT pride speech which resulted in cheers of "Obama Obama" from the remaining press. A marginalized person advocating for the rights of LGBT immigrants is treated like that. Shameful. Nothing shows the media bias better.

Instead of her holding a "fundraiser" with $2000 dinners, she holds an event that is catering to her future constituents. Her mistake was not making sure the marketing materials were all consistent. Oops.

She does need to get started on those "dinners" though. This is a non-story.

i give her the benefit of a doubt she wanted to run a legit townhall, which as a house of representatives candidate is supposed to be a local and fairly no-frills affair

better than sticking to the laurels of "transparency" and making it a circus or conducting a dog and pony show.

Remember all of the calls for "grass roots" efforts during previous campaigns? She is a result of that. Are we better now?

There really should be higher criteria for voting, but that is just wishful thinking. Who would you trust to make a better, more-informed decision? A 50 year old man or an 18 year old kid?

Of course she did. Have you seen what happens when you ask her to actually explain an answer she gives on hot button issues? She might as well just say she’ll have to get back to you after she can check reddit politics for why she thinks that way.

the town hall meetings were advertised as open to the public. Her staff banned the media from entering and they later pinned the mistake on immigrants and domestic abuse victims. Its pretty clear the real reason she did it was so she could preserve her public image before the elections.if she did it once id say OK shes probably new and doesn't understand how things work but they also did it in the Bronx.

If she would have let the press in her detractors would have accused her of using these people for a photo-op. So she doesn't let them in and now she is accused of being a coward.

Its almost as if people who don't like her will find any excuse to attack her.

What does a "fundraiser" have to do with a Q&A? She advertised a PUBLIC town hall, then backed down using the excuse that the media would go after the illegals there. Which makes no sense as ICE would actually prefer less media attention as they arrest the law breakers.

It's far too early for her to have fundraiser dinners anyways, she's only won a primary. It seems you're trying to deflect from her recent idiocy shown by the media

Can you imagine if Trump did this even pre-presidency??

They’re discussing secret white superiority issues in their safe space!?

Journalism is under attack!!!

Be fucking consistent...

It's almost as if people who like her will engage in whatever gymnastics necessary to defend her.

And let's be honest. Is she really worth defending to this extent? YOU have a better grasp of the issues than she does, as do I, as does ssolitaire, and many other random posters here on gaf. That is pretty bad. Get a better candidate.

They block people who are more likely to have dissenting opinions because they know their shit ideas don’t hold up to scrutiny.

Do a search for for private Town Halls for Mitch McConnell.
And dozens of other elected officials that hold private Town Halls.

They are are wrong In doing this.

Once again the difference is that a candidate and an elected official, let alone potus should be held to bigger different fucking standards

She is a fool and I am glad those under the same political umbrella are calling her out for this. She is a shame.

Your us v. them shtick is embarrassing. It's okay to say this woman is in the wrong. If your meeting is public, everyone is invited. The press is the public.

Maybe you have the strength of character to admit this is indefensible. More likely than not, you will either deflect or lash out.
