Countdown to Shenmue 3 (release date: 19th November 2019)

As of the posting of this thread, there are just over 18 days left until the release of this long awaited sequel. I'm pretty hyped, and that's speaking as a relative newcomer to the series. I can only imagine how excited those hardcore fans who have been waiting nearly twenty years are. As we get closer to release date we can expect a little marketing push (little probably being the operative word here), and that is what this thread is for.

First up, here is a new trailer, with new scenes featuring Ren and LanDi:

I think it's great that we are getting two unique takes on the open world genre within the same month, Shenmue 3 and Death Stranding. It will be interesting to see both the critical and commercial reception they get. If successful, they could open up new possibilities for future games.

There have been a number of promotional mini-interviews with Yu Suzuki.

Story

Shenmue's World

Training

No subs so far for this one, but Phantom River Stone has a translation:

Below is a summary of the points Yu talks about in the video.

What is "Hazuki-style Jujitsu"?
  • Yu wanted to have a character with strong roots, who carries across his beliefs with him from Japan to China. His martial arts, which Yu named "Hazuki-style jujitsu," is symbolic of that.
  • Yu's concept has for this style is that its' flexible: it is not about only attacking and defeating your opponent, but also about deflecting your opponent's attacks.

Story Advances As You Become Stronger
  • You'll come up against opponents as the story progresses: middle-ranking enemy bosses, high-ranking ones and so on. Occasionally you'll need to defeat them to progress.
  • To become a stronger fighter, one method is obtaining Skill Books. Used well, these will enable to you to progress the most efficiently because you can combine them with potions to restore your health. Some players advance by spending all the money they earn on potions to help in winning fights.

The New "Dojo" System
  • There is a Dojo where you can train and increase your level at any time. You can improve your Endurance, and carry out sparring to increase your Attack level.
  • At the Horse Stance training mini-game, you have to hold a pose with timed button presses. If you press too quickly, you'll lose your balance and fall over. Yu comments that it's probably the world's simplest game (he initially uses the word "boring" but corrects it, joking that it's not a word he should use to describe it!).
  • After building up your levels through training, you can test how strong you are through matches at the Dojo.
  • At Bailu village you can fight opponents up to 5th Duan (rank). If Ryo beats a 1st-Duan opponent he will become 1st-Duan himself; if he beats a 2nd-Duan he will become 2nd-Duan and so on.
Variable Difficulty Setting
  • Yu considers Shenmue to be an RPG, so wants even players who aren't good at fighting to be able to complete it.
  • There are 4 levels of difficulty available (Story Mode, Recommended, Challenge Mode and "You'd Better Not!").
  • Story Mode reduces the difficulty of battles etc.
  • There is also Challenge Mode, but according to Yu "it isn't that difficult" and he recommends choosing this level for Shenmue fans.

Yeah, I'm super psyched although I'm worried they're retconning Shenhua's original outfit since we havent seen it in ages and they said they reshot 2's ending.

Wow I have to admit I had no idea we were so close to the release date. Probably won’t buy early just not sure at all about this one. Shenmue one was amazing in its day but it hasn’t aged well at all. I really need to see what this one looks like before buying.

It's a trashy cash grab. Apparently yu suzuki wants to make 5 more shenmue games after

This video is about the part time jobs, exploring the environment, the new clothes system and more (don't forget to turn on the subs):

Man, Ryo wearing this jacket and t-shirt just seems so wrong:

It's a great ROI when you think you can get the full game now for the £20 you paid in 2015.

I hope the digital code comes soon though, they are leaving it late.

I'm extremly hyped but I didn't preorder. I've learned my lesson with preordering no matter how interested I'm in the game. I'm gonna wait for a few reviews before getting it.

I only played Shenmue 1 and 2 this year and wasn't enamored by the second game but I'm happy to be able to continue the journey :)

Lots of cheeky questions here, but Yu Suzuki takes them with good humour and there is actually some nice info hidden away in here too (5 minute video):

- Does Ryo cares about girls at all?
- He probably doesn't like girls much.
- Does he like the guys?

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
I want it but it still annoys me that it's only on EGS and not Steam :lollipop_crying:
I'm sorry, but this is so immature to me. If you don't wanna play the game, don't.

Shenmue was never on all platforms. It wasn't on a Sony console for a long time, it wasn't on a Nintendo console ever. It hasn't even been on PC. Am I gonna rain on people's parades because of that? So what if you can't get the game on Steam day one? I don't quite understand that, seems like a non-issue. But carry on with the topic please.

This totally crept up on me and I’m still farting around in Wise Men’s Qtr asking about blades n shit. Looks like 3 might be a Christmas game.

Justv 4 days now, and here is a lovely video with Yu Suzuki talking about the "miracle" of Shenmue 3:

Glad to see Sony are promoting the game. Interesting what the video said about your relationship with Shenhua evolving differently depending on your interactions with her. There was a similar mechanic at play in the first game with Nazomi, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out here. Anyone else thinking about playing as "arsehole Ryo"? :messenger_beaming:

The release date is stupid. I don't want the game to fail...

I think the release date turned out pretty decent in the end. November is usually a big game time, but this year is relatively quiet. Death Stranding has been out for long enough for that hype to start to slow down and I can't see many other huge releases to overshadow Shenmue 3 (unless you consider Stadia's launch distracting)

Star Wars and Pokemon all close to Shenmue. Not a lot of people but couple of games close to each other
