Covid 19 Thread: [no bitching about masks of Fauci edition]

Loki

Count of Concision
The Covid pandemic in the US was over 3 times as deadly as the worst flu season the US has had in the last 10 years. That is using the governments own numbers from the CDC.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Just stop. It's embarrassing.

Yes, I agree that it was 3+ times more deadly than a bad flu season...from March through the fall of 2020. I am referring to the present reality, taking into account the existing immunity among the population (via vaccines and natural immunity), which reduces both spread and severity of cases, as well as our improved treatment modalities. I know you'd like to pretend that I don't know what I'm talking about, but you'd be wrong.

Yup. And here we are. That lefty might as well be wearing jackboots.

This is what they want. Many don't realize it yet, but that is exactly what they want.
What really blows my mind is that his coworker is standing right behind him with his mask around his fucking chin. Regardless of your feeling on masks, the certainly don’t do anything when they aren’t even covering your nose or mouth.

Does anyone have family or friends who were previously supporting draconian measures no matter what....but got converted into being strongly against them?

It seems so rare. I have a friend in Toronto who kept making anti-lockdown posts last summer/fall and out of his 400 FB friends, he only managed to convert one....one friend after exhausting debate that lasted weeks.

Seeing my New York FB friends posts and comparing them to the friends in Texas/Louisiana/FL or 3rd world countries that didn't really lock down ever....is pretty disturbing/chilling. The former truly post as if they literally could not live in any normalcy before getting vaccinated a month ago, while the latter were just living a normal life the entire pandemic. Same age brackets too. And these New Yorker friends - it's not like they were insulated - they all have friends in deep red areas, hell most of them grew up in places like South Carolina and later moved to New York. There's no way they didn't notice that they had friends in other states or countries who were just living business as usual a long ass time ago before any vaccines were available.

Seems pride is the worst sin of all.

In those places, the thought of being labeled a “Republican” (and by virtue against science, racist, bigot…. And if you were against the lockdowns you were an anti science Republican trump supporter) commanded obedience. In those areas, social credit (and perceived intelligence) is how strongly one can identify with the narrative.

so yeah. That’s why.

Jon Stewart was just on late night with Stephen Colbert, and his take on the lab-leak theory of COVID-19 surprised the audience. How COVID originated is important, because the answer has the potential to aid in the prevention or mitigation of future pandemics. But there was something that Jon Stewart said that I think is over-the-top. On May 26, 2021, President Biden directed the U.S. Intelligence Community to step up their investigative efforts into the origin of the pandemic and report back in 90 days. In addition, Australia, the European Union, and Japan have expressed a desire to make a more concerted effort to determine the origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. On March 4, 2021, prominent scientists, in an open letter to the World Health Organization, called for a full and unrestricted investigation. Why the sudden interest? A recently released U.S. intelligence report stated that several researchers at China's WIV fell ill in November 2019 and had to be hospitalized. And just today, there was a study that showed evidence that people had antibodies in the United States in December of 2019. The Lab leak theory Was an employee at the Wuhan virology lab accidentally infected and then spread the virus, especially if the initial contacts were asymptomatic? The largest collection of bat samples, especially ones containing bat coronaviruses, are in the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). Could poor lab techniques by inadequately trained technicians allow the virus to escape? Could researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology have made the virus more virulent and transmissible by experimenting with gain of function mutations? These mutations are designed to hasten the evolutionary process so scientists can be prepared for future pandemics. This theory carries more controversy than the theory that the virus was naturally transmitted. It is more politically charged and has economic, social, and political implications. Unfortunately, this theory received only a brief mention in the WHO report. A mere 4 of the 313 pages of the report were devoted to it. The Timeline Several researchers inside the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) became ill in the fall of 2019 with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or the seasonal flu. In November 2019, three of the WIV researchers became sick enough to seek hospital care. Dr. Robert Redfield believes the current pandemic began in Wuhan as a localized outbreak in September-October 2019. Especially because of how well-adapted this virus is to human ACE2 receptors. This virus essentially hit ground running. The Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases did not formally notify the U.S. of the cluster of patients with pneumonia until December 31, 2019. Dr. Robert Kadlac said that China used this 30 day lead time to purchase supplies. Dr. Redfield spoke with his Chinese counterpart, Dr. George Gao, who was distraught that many people infected with COVID-19 were not at the wet market. The Precedent for Lab Accidents Lab accidents have caused previous outbreaks of infection in China and elsewhere. In Beijing, China, for example, an outbreak infected nine people and killed one. A smallpox lab leak occurred in the United Kingdom in 1978, and an anthrax lab leak occurred in the United States in 2014. Furthermore, Dr. Shi Zhengli aka the bat woman, has admitted that coronavirus research was carried out in labs with Biosafety Level 2 rather than the more stringent Biosafety Level 4. In a Biosafety Level 2 lab, researchers wear white coats and gloves, not protective gear. U.S. Embassy officials raised concerns about WIV's lab safety in 2018. These concerns specifically addressed a severe shortage of appropriately trained technicians. Chinese experts have also expressed concerns about lab safety in their own country, lamenting that "lab trash can contain man‐made viruses, bacteria or microbes" and that "some researchers discharge laboratory materials into the sewer after experiments without a specific biological disposal mechanism." U.S. Labs have also been cited for safety issues, including the Biosafety level (BSL)‐4 United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) facility in Fort Detrick. Marc Lipsitch, a well-known Harvard University epidemiologist, estimated the risk of a pandemic occurring due to an accidental release from a high-security bio lab at between 1 in 1,000 and 1 in 10,000 per year. He previously warned about the proliferation of these labs globally. This theory gains credence when independent journalists, investigators, and global health authorities have been denied access to WIV researchers.

Bret Weinstein on Triggernometry, talking mostly about his lab leak take and youtube shenanigans

Since Weinstein seems to be a controversial figure, here's a link to the "decoding the guru's" podcast for balance:
decoding the guru's
Latest episode takes on Eric (Bret's brother, mathematician) Weinstein's 'Geometic Unity' theory, and certainly has some examples of less than charming behaviour.
I'd be open to having a topic about 'internet guru's'/public intellectuals in general if people are interested. I think we could steer it clear of politics.

I liked when Bret told them to grow a spine.

I know this isn't very edifying, but Slavitt's looks and mannerisms make my skin crawl and make me not believe a word he is saying.

Beautiful to see. The pandemic is over. It’s time to accept it. All we have to do is allow ourselves to be free of it at this point. There are about 10,000 new cases testing positive a day in the US. That’s it. We used to have multiple states over 10,000 positive tests a day just a 5 months ago.

I love seeing those pictures. It’s good to see faces in public again.

Portugal got worse, yet 67 vaccinations per 100 citizens were administered there. (most would be BioNTech)
We are in deep shit with that delta mod (can't find any other explanation)... :(
(only about 10% are vaccinated in Russia)

Hasn’t the UK been in relative lockdown until recently? If so, then of course they’re going to see a spike when lockdown is eased. This is to be expected. People are going to have to accept that this disease will be with us forever. As long as it’s not completely overwhelming the healthcare system, you’re going to have to summon a bit of courage and get on with living. Especially once you’re vaccinated.

Yeah it's very rare. A distant relative of mine had her fitness studio shut down for months, went through covid without any symptoms (she's very fit obviously and in her late 20s) and she still thinks it was the right thing to do lockdowns while allowing certain businesses (or churches) to stay open like it's normal.

It’s all about keeping that grant money flowing. Science, as an institution, has been corrupted by politics for a long time. In the longer term, eventually the truth tends to win out because reality just has its way regardless of what scientists say. But in the short term, a lot of what is fed to the public as “science” is really political dogma dressed up as science to keep the grant money coming in. No one wants to contradict government guys like Fauci lest he shut off the money spigot, which it was well within his power to do.

Freedom! This thing is over. It’s time to get on with it.
I‘m pretty sure I read that exact same comment in the old thread ca. August 2020. This shit is far from over unfortunately. Most of the world is unvaccinated. But it is definitely more seasonal than expected, I doubt there will be a big surge in the Northern hemisphere until fall.

Unfortunately for you, it is over. If you are vaccinated, IT.IS.OVER. Let go of your fear. Let go of wanting to control. IT.IS.OVER. (unless you are just a science denier). Just admit that you want your fear (and control) to govern over everyone. Admit it. It has nothing to do with science. Nothing.

The rest of the world is soon to follow with the vaccinations.

And with treatments getting better and better, the mortality rate (even if you do get) is falling. So yeah brochacho, it is over. Anyone who says otherwise is a science denier who is more into totalitarian policies rather than into science and public health.

Maybe my sarcasm detector has become desensitized because I can’t tell if you’re being serious.

People are dumb enough to think covid won't spread while eating at a table indoors, but will spread while walking to the table without a mask on. He's not being sarcastic.

Meanwhile you have cocksuckers on social media sharing this report to defend lockdowns.

Basically, all of the mega rich tech companies made out like bandits while lower wage workers and smaller businesses got crushed, but overall the state's GDP didn't shrink much so bootlickers are calling it a win.

The lockdowns protected the rich from C-19 as the poor risked their lives to serve them.
