I think this might be the first digital pre-order that I do. If they announce a collector's physical edition, I'll be in trouble.

I never liked the idea of unlockable abilities. Everything Crash can do should be available from the start and the entire game should be balanced around that moveset. The bazooka was a dumb feature anyway and should be removed entirely. The super spin made it so you didn't have to time your spin as well so yeah remove that too. The only ability that had somewhat of a reason to be there was the sprint button since that gives the time trials a bit more fun, and there's no reason that cant be there as a standard ability from the start.

Crash 3 is the only game of the 3 where I'd say the level design or gameplay itself needs tweaking. With Crash 1 it just needed a slight improvement for the jump controls to match 2/3, and a better save system. Crash 2 needs no changing whatsoever.
The Death Tornado Spin can be used to glide over gaps and stay airborne. It was especially helpful in Tomb Wader and Gone Tomorrow.

A shame they couldn't get Clancy Brown back to be Neo Cortex, compared to usual VO roles these days, the entire trilogy could be recorded in a days session really.

Was it seen as a PS game wrt console platforms? Sure. But most of my friends played the TR games on PC. Crash was a much much bigger PS brand. Those first three games and CTR were PS exclusives. It was the Mario/Sonic of PlayStation. So Sony has every reason to want to keep this game as a PS exclusive for marketing purposes. I mean after all they launched the PS4 with that Crash and SCE logo sign.

I was only arguing the point that Tomb Raider was "never strongly seen" as a PS franchise, which is completely false.

I do, however, agree that keeping this only on PS4 would probably be in Sony's (and to some degree, PS4 owners') best interests.

Or at the very least, away from Xbox and Nintendo (don't think a PC port would hurt as much).

I'm conflicted about exclusivity. My nostalgia bone is telling me it should be a PS4 exclusive, but playing Crash HD on the go on the Switch would be pretty amazing..

They won't remove and/or tweak anything. They're trying to be as faithful to the originals as they can.
The best you can do is try to not abuse Crash's abilities.

Sadly, VV is in a really odd position with these games. They will get shit if they don't change anything, they will get shit if they change something too much.
At the end they never win. There will be people bitching at both sides of the spectrum ready to dismiss their work because it doesn't meet their criteria of what makes Crash "good".

For the most part that's fine. Crash 3 is the only one I've got major issues with. Crash 2 is perfect as it is and any tweaks needed for Crash 1 aren't anything to do with level design. It's just little things like the save system, which are already confirmed to be changed.

With that said even with Crash 3, the only aspect of it that I do feel is an absolute must for them to tweak majorly is the non platforming stages. Those, quite frankly, sucked ass. I can deal with Crash's abilities and the level design of the main stages going unchanged. But the vehicle stages? They gotta make some big changes to make those fun.

As someone who is a huge fan of the first three Crash Bandicoot titles and who has a Bachelor's Degree in 3D asset/animation creation, I have to say that this does look better than I was thinking it would.

A few things though:

The environment geometry and detail is great, almost perfect even, but it feels like the texture materials could use an extra level or layer of detail/grit to really drive that detailed Crash Bandicoot look.

What I mean by that is it seems like all of the stonework/ruins/foliage/environmental props are missing a level of detail/channel in the material that would add that extra grime/grit/dirt/moss/texture. As it is, a lot of their material work just seems like basic diffuse colors + specular on 3D models. If they add in an extra layer of detail to really drive up the grunge that is present in the original games, it would greatly help to tie everything together.

I'm hoping that since this is the first time they've shown it off and the fact that they didn't show any of 2 and 3 means that the textures and assets are still very much WIP.

I think the Crash model and his animation is mostly excellent, but I feel like his spin animation could use a little more refinement. I also worry about how precise and tight he feels to control as just judging by some of the videos, it looked like some people were having some trouble landing accurate jumps. Some may argue that Crash never controlled very precisely and to those people I say: "You're wrong."

As someone mentioned earlier in the thread, I'm not too big on how the crate signage looks, same with the font used for the UI. I also don't think the boxes break with enough 'oomph', which could really be helped by adding in more bits and pieces breaking away when Crash breaks the crates.

The delay on the wumpa fruit and tokens has already been mentioned, but that's another issue I had as well.

I also wish that Clancy Brown was voicing Cortex, but I'll get over it. Same with Josh Mancell doing the music.

Hopefully they can tighten up some of my few complaints. If they do, this will be an absolute amazing recreation of those original games.

I'm excited!

Tbh, I always had the impression the bike stages were actually designed that way just for the sake of challenge.
The Pura, water ski and submarine levels handled perfectly fine. Handling wasn't as stiff as the bike ones which were piss easy on estructure and design.

I can see why most people would think they're a pain in the ass tho. They got a little frustrating after a while.

Naughty Dog still have some great artists from the Crash days. Erick Pangilinan was there from Crash and he was heavily involved in the art of The Last of Us so I don't see the harm in at least consulting someone who had a hand in the original games.

Not to mention, you know, Evan Wells, who was one of the key designers on Crash 2+3...

From playing it, the camera follows Crash too closely. For instance: the box bridge in N. Sanity Beach (level 1) is only hard now because the camera goes too high and tries to follow Crash, but you can't see the ground. There were also many people who don't remember/know that holding X gives you a bigger bounce.

No Clancy Brown is a shame, but Lex Lang has proven himself in TwinSanity especially.

I don't know if I'd call it cheap. It just looks....off. It's a stylistic thing. The visuals just don't seem right. But this is coming from someone who has played the originals to death, so the change just seems jarring. I had a similar reaction when I first saw Oddworld New n Tasty but eventually I got used to the look.

I get that and I feel that the change is probably due to the devs just not engaging with the visuals of the originals on a deeper level, instead of a deliberate change. Personally, I still can't stand the visual change in New 'n' Tasty (believe me, I could talk for days on end about the things I liked and didn't like about that remake - you'd think it was my job or something), so I definitely get the importance of getting the look just right; otherwise you'll lose most of the charm that the classics had.

Not to mention, you know, Evan Wells, who was one of the key designers on Crash 2+3...

I'm kicking myself right now - how could I forget him? Co-president of the goddamn company...

Yeah, Lex Lang is amazing as Cortex. He perfectly manages to deliver that same tone that Clancy Brown had and he's great at adding some comedic flair. John DiMaggio as Uka Uka, on the otherhand...

that's gonna be interesting.

Is there any specific way we can contact VV about these small details? I mean people may be moaning and complaining BUT that's because they are SOO close, the overall graphics and improvements are great, just a few small things here and there that should be brought to attention before release so we can be sure the product comes out to the best it can be.

I love that bandicoot is back in the title. When that disappeared after the ps1 gen you knew the game was probably bad. Also never realized how bad the WOC model was.

Yeah you guys are right about Lex Lang and his rendition of Dr. Cortex. If it can't be Clancy Brown then he's a more than suitable replacement. I also enjoy Twinsanity and it's definitely the best of the post-ND games imo, but I still prefer Clancy Brown's rendition.

I also sort of wish that Cortex's design more closely mirrored his original appearance rather than Twinsanity's, but it's no big deal really.

I really do hope that the texture work is just unfinished because they nailed the density and placement of all of the objects.

Refine the textures and color rendering, add more oomph to the crates and make sure that Crash feels good and snappy to control and they have some perfect remakes in my opinion.

Going forward, hopefully people will point to both Resident Evil Remake and this remade collection of Crash Bandicoot games as remakes done properly.

I pride myself on owning every Crash title in the series and yet I can still see myself buying into this remake even though I've been burned by so many other low budget, hi-res remakes.

Here's hoping they lost that floaty movement that was so prevalent in The Wrath of Cortex and many of the later entires in the series.

Awesome work! Jesus, it's like as the quality of the games are reflective of Crash's design quality. Not only were the entries between Tag Team Racing and the N-Sane trilogy bad, it looks like Crash developed an eating disorder during those times to boot.

Just looked into this and it turns out Uka Uka was voiced by Alex Fernandez, not Lex or John; which is strange but I'm fine with it. Uka Uka actually sounds like himself instead of Jake from Adventure Time/Bender from Futurama.

Not Alex. That was just a rumor/assumption.

Looks really good.
It just hit me, they announced the game and all but we have no new renders of Crash.
The only one would be the one from the boxart and even then that one is more an illustration rather than an actual render.

Reddit always has been a bitch to me to find stuff.

If anything, hope it's true. If there's a company that would understand the sountracks is this one.

That would be an odd choice seeing as under Mutato Muzika, most of their games were done by Josh Mancell? Who at Mutato Muzika would be handling these?

Josh Mancell did most of the actual composing for the soundtracks but he worked at Mutato Muzika and collaborated with Mark Mothersbaugh, who's done a bunch of soundtracks, especially through the 90's and 00's. More importantly though, he's the frontman of Devo.

This is so true! Crash is just such a little prick in Tag Team Racing:

But if it makes you feel better, you get to see him suffer:

Just saw a video showing all the first levels of every game. The art style in CBB, CTTR and Titans makes me want to throw up. I also noticed something that is missing. The wumpa fruit sound is half way correct. The munch has been in all of them but in the ps1 up to WOC had a chring sound immediately after as it was added to counter. Twinsanity and I think the gameboy games remove the chring sound.

I haven't followed this very closely but I was somewhat disappointed to learn this doesn't include Wrath of Cortex, since that's the one I really enjoyed back in 2001. I guess 3's a lot already.

Though I was never a big Crash fan and I haven't played it ever since so I don't know how it holds up. I'm guessing that one isn't one of the beloved ones though huh?

Still, I'm looking forward to this! Looks pretty nice to me and there aren't enough mascot platformers out there nowadays. Not sure why that boulder lost its detail in the remake though? :|

Quality aside, I think the idea here was just to focus on the original trilogy that Naughty Dog developed (CTR aside, which will hopefully come later). Wrath was the first mainline Crash game not developed by ND; Traveller's Tales took the reins on that one.

Say what you want to say about Titans/MoM as "crash games" or Crash's design -- but the art style itself in them is very nice in my opinion.

Yup, I was actually pleasantly surprised by Titans. It was a wildly different take on Crash for sure, but overall I found it to be pretty neat. Nice art, interesting mechanics, good sound.

I never got too into Crash but borrowed the second and beat it. Thought it was good. I guess fans are getting what they wanted though, a straight remake of the games, which is awesome. Looking forward to this and will play all three.

I'd love this on Switch, but my old PS1 nostalgia is telling me Crash = Sony

I don't even have a PS4 or plan on getting one...

It should stay exclusive because Sony could always use another high quality exclusive. Also it's Crash. He belongs on PlayStation.
